Children: ‘No Christmas, Please!’ YAY!

PoliticalPossum · 18/12/2024 06:25

So, my teenagers confirmed last night they don’t want to do Christmas! They just want to spend the day with family, relaxing, eating good food, playing with the dog and watching old films - no roast, no presents, no forced interactions with family they don’t like.

Not sure whether to laugh, because honestly just eating nibbles, fruit and salads all day whilst we watch Star Wars and DH loses so badly at scrabble he tosses the tiles across the table again sounds amazing, or to cry tears of joy because they actually agreed on something together (honestly, it’s the first time I can remember them ever agreeing)

Not even anything to really comment on here. I just wanted to post and say how happy I am that we all get a day off and can actually just relax without any pressure! Obviously did not say this to them, just nodded and said ‘oh that sounds lovely’ but I am so pleased!

You don't need to be Columbo to see that there are more holes in this story than a pair of fishnet stockings.

But why? What are you getting out of fabricating a story in which you are 31, have been hosting parents at Xmas for twenty years, that they are in their late 80s, and you have teenagers - just to tell us all that you are forgoing a turkey dinner and a busy party - was it all about the salad - go on, it was wasn't it?

AhBiscuits · 18/12/2024 12:50

Well done Mumsnet sleuths, this has been entertaining.
A lesson to trolls to nail down your timelines if you're going to make shit up convincingly.

Your DH throws stuff when he gets annoyed and your kids want to forgo Christmas presents you’ve already bought so they don’t have to go to a family party? I’m a bit lost as to what’s being celebrated here.

Yeah, her DH sounds awful. Abusive really. Maybe she needs to go to a women's shelter. 🙄

NicNak71 · 18/12/2024 13:12

At least she can cancel the cheque for the teens presents and maybe put the money into a trip to Maui!
Does anyone remember the Maui thread or have I gone so far back in time the internet was still dial up? 😀

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 18/12/2024 13:12

Don't forget to keep your salad bowl overflowing and crispy! And if you feel oppressed by stodgy food and overbearing relatives this festive season, stick a satsuma in your pocket and go for a brisk walk!

When I was a teen (15 or so years ago) my siblings and I forgo having presents. My parents once successful business ran into trouble due to a large multi national opening up around the corner. We had bailiffs and everything. Teens are capable of not being brats re presents.

That's different to the OP's scenario though on two counts - firstly, your situation presumably actually happened and isn't made up. Secondly, in the OP's imaginary tale, these teens decided they didn't want any gifts for ~undefined reasons~ (which turned out to be that said teenagers are fictional) but definitely not due to unexpectedly straitened circumstances which is why it was remarkable. There is nothing 'bratty' about teenagers, or anyone else, wanting to participate in the very well established custom of exchanging presents at Christmas. Children and adults alike are allowed to want things and it isn't grabby to give and receive gifts on special occasions. No one has to do it, families can have all sorts of reasons for not doing it, but those who do aren't inherently bratty - it's pretty normal behaviour, and when it's reciprocal, done with generous spirit and received with gratitude then I can't see what the problem is?

A blast from the past, it’s ages since I’ve seen a Maui reference. Those were the days of quality trolls. Not like today’s cheap flimsy trolls that fall apart too easily.

Wonderi · 18/12/2024 13:15

So glad this isn’t being deleted yet!!

It’s the season of celebrating mythical creatures and so enjoying one more isn’t going to do us any harm.

I am saddened that OP has de-registered though, as she was fun.

Hopefully she’ll come back as another poster or OP and start another wacky thread.

I am poorly and feeling sorry for myself so I’m grateful for the laughs 😁

buzzheath · 18/12/2024 13:15

Why would someone make this up? I'm so confused.

If only the OP had managed to incorporate a supersoaker into the story - that would have brought back memories of the Trolls of Mumsnet Past!

MyGladBiscuit · 18/12/2024 12:49

that’s exactly what i’m suggesting!

but why would i report when i’ve found the evolution of this thread so entertaining?!

Well - I look like a complete numpty now! What an idiot. 😳😳😳😂

Whoarethoseguys · 18/12/2024 13:19

I think no presents is a bit sad. I love choosing wrapping and giving presents to my children and now grandchildren.
The rest of the day sounds nice if that is what you all want to do.

UpUpUpU · 18/12/2024 13:21

Ahhh, this thread has got me out of my bad mood and through all of my wrapping. Thank you de registered OP for your post 😁

buzzheath · 18/12/2024 13:23

WHYYY would someone do this whyyyyyyy? Like what is the motive?????

RexsSoupCan · 18/12/2024 13:27

Did everyone else read this in the most ranty teenager voice they could imagine? It's even better if you imagine a door slam at the end.

brilliant did social media tell u to say this lol

WinterCrow · 18/12/2024 13:35

I find when starting to read a longish thread that it helps to read any posts comments from MNHQ, as flagged and linked at the start of the thread, as well as the last few posts in order to see how things have gone nuts are panning out.

Yes, I saw my entire response to your word salad on Instagram. What an odd thing to say.

Also, who was being an arsehole in the first 30 posts? It's a mix of people saying 'go for it, sounds lovely' and 'but what will you do with the presents you've bought?' which seems pretty reasonable - it was hardly pitchforks and brimstone? I think a lot of people are responding to the thread they expected to read rather than the one that actually exists, which I guess is in keeping with the OP so maybe it's fitting after all.

but it does add to making this thread even funnier!
