Children: ‘No Christmas, Please!’ YAY!

PoliticalPossum · 18/12/2024 06:25

So, my teenagers confirmed last night they don’t want to do Christmas! They just want to spend the day with family, relaxing, eating good food, playing with the dog and watching old films - no roast, no presents, no forced interactions with family they don’t like.

Not sure whether to laugh, because honestly just eating nibbles, fruit and salads all day whilst we watch Star Wars and DH loses so badly at scrabble he tosses the tiles across the table again sounds amazing, or to cry tears of joy because they actually agreed on something together (honestly, it’s the first time I can remember them ever agreeing)

Not even anything to really comment on here. I just wanted to post and say how happy I am that we all get a day off and can actually just relax without any pressure! Obviously did not say this to them, just nodded and said ‘oh that sounds lovely’ but I am so pleased!

You need to read the full thread about this 31 year old who has two adopted teenagers and whose late 80s DM has been coming to OP's for Xmas for 20 plus years...

Don't forget the drunken elderly ladies, clutching their smutty novels and sherry while OP frolics in the kitchen making massive salads. And the sister who hosts for 40+ people in her mansion!

Oh, and that it's not only the DM who's been coming around since OP was 11...but OP's MIL! 😂

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/12/2024 11:41

I think it sounds like you will have a lovely day, @PoliticalPossum - one that suits your family. And I am shocked at the suggestion that you might be having a breakdown, because that's the only reason why someone would decide to have a different sort of Christmas.

I don't know why everyone is giving the OP such a hard time.

She was a parentified child, forced to host parties for a cast of thousands from a very young age. She was also forced into marriage at the same age as she was totally controlled by the adults around her.
Her DH is an unpleasant man prone to insisting people play Scrabble with him.

Did I say under the control of adults? Actually she was sold by her own family to a couple who were too old to have their own children, and had responded by turning to drink.

OP's response to this horrendous earlier life is to try to spread the love that she clearly has by adopting otherwise unwanted teenagers.

She should be commended, and not mocked.

Perhaps we could start a whip round for some therapy for her?

Or salad?

I did, but not 15 pages of it. Have better things to do, but you obviously don't. Have a lovely day.

What an effing stupid, graceless response. YOU’RE the one who came on saying you “weren’t sure” why the OP was getting a hard time. Another poster gives you a hint and you reply by suggesting you’re better than them.

Are you suggesting that @PoliticalPossum is lying, @UpUpUpU?

If you don't believe the OP, you should report it rather than going in for slightly disguised troll hunting.

I think it’s less about the festive salad and no presents for teens, and more about likely having fantasied the whole situation to start with that makes people think the stresses of the season have caused the op to possibly reimagine a more relaxed scenario. Because really, really really, outside the bubble of Mumsnet with perfect teens and Massive Salads that feed the 5 thousands, this situation is just unbelievable. Especially the teenagers saying they don’t want their already bought presents bit, just laughably no.

GiddyRobin · 18/12/2024 11:48

@redskydarknight You're absolutely right. She won't be able to afford therapy, not with the rising price of olives. Plus dog food for her many dogs.

Maybe we should also get this moved to Relationships for her. She needs to go NC with her DM and LTB her DH for his raging scrabble insanity every Christmas season.

Obviously troll hunting is not ok and none of us want to be out on the naughty step for Christmas. But sometimes when something quacks, waddles and sticks it’s bum up in the water, you’re quite right to point out it’s a duck without being told off for it.

Oh for goodness sake, people are having a bit of fun with the thread in the same way that OP was clearly having a bit of fun making it. 'Tis the season to be jolly Xmas Smile

We had a Christmas Day a few years ago where everyone chose their favourite food and we just had that as a buffet you could dip into when you fancied. It's dd's best one ever. She'd never forgo the presents though 😂

I’m doing buffet including nice ham and chocolate fountain and champagne .

Probably make a nice soup the day before though .

CappuccinoChocolate · 18/12/2024 11:54

Some of you lot would do anything to pee on someone's chips.

YANBU @PoliticalPossum have a lovely relaxed time with the kids and both your Mums.

I truly don't, I've been gripped by it all morning! Should probably have done a bit more work really.

RetroTotty · 18/12/2024 11:55

OP is 31 and has been hosting Xmas for her DM AND MIL for 20 years. Her DM and MIL both gave birth in their late 50s. THIS is what pp are having fun with!

mcmooberry · 18/12/2024 11:56

Sounds brilliant especially not having to leave the house! Everyone tips the board at Scrabble when they lose, can't blame your DH for that!

SilverChampagne · 18/12/2024 11:56

Cuppaand2biscuits · 18/12/2024 07:46

The 5 hour, 40 plus guest party sounds horrendous and my 12 and 14 year old would hate that as much as I would.
To be honest, I'd give up presents for a whole year and eat nothing but cereal if it meant I got to avoid that so I totally understand the joy of staying at home and eating what you choose.
Have a wonderful day.

Horrendous? It’s family and friends getting together for Christmas 🤷🏻‍♀️
Hardly unusual.
If it’s not your thing, fine, but don’t make it sound like some sort of arcane ritual used purely as a means of torture 😂

LaceAndCrimes · 18/12/2024 11:57

latetonews · 18/12/2024 11:28

Everyone banging on about the presents is the perfect example of what the day actually means. Mindless consumerism.

Your teenagers should be congratulated on not falling for the marketing nonsense that most adults fall for.

It is easy not to fall for consumerist nonsense when you are a fictional character though

I feel for all these youngsters and Johnny Come Latelies who missed MN in its Screaming in the Sistine Chapel and My husband came all over my university homework during an argument halcyon days. 💔

This thread is AMATEUR by comparison.

80smonster · 18/12/2024 12:13

What a bizarre post. Are you particularly hard up? Teenagers are pretty shrewd and if they sense you can’t afford to do something, would probably suggest what yours have, as they have begun to understand the pressure on adults to perform at this time of year. If you aren’t, I’d give them their presents and have your delicious fattoush, sans christmas circus. No biggie etc.
