DM and I were discussing this last night, she's now in her Eighties and used to really like the Queen (not so much Phillip for some reason) but now really isn't bothered and thinks the RF, as is, should be abolished . I've always been a Republican but I was surprised at DM as she always seemed very pro RF but actually was pro the late Queen.

IMHO it seems so past it's sell by date but I'd be interested to know others opinions.

Haven't read the whole thread, but aside from all of the obvious issues, I think it's a human rights issue. Seems to make everyone involved utterly miserable. Harry had a point when he said that he had been entered into an invisible contract with the press as an infant.

Any and all of them are free to walk away at any point.

Amazing how few ever do.

@CathyorClaire "Any and all of them are free to walk away at any point"

Indeed

brightdazzling · 24/12/2024 13:03

I’m not convinced it’s that easy given it’s a family job and all you’ve ever known. And even if you can walk away, by that point you've already suffered the damage. You’ve been made a public figure whether you want to be or not. Ongoing security issues, lack of employability etc.

Sure, there is huge privilege involved too, but it’s not a life I’d choose for anyone I loved. Hardly any celebrities allow their children’s faces to be shown these days and there is a reason for that.

Queens sister so in love with Peter Townsend but not that much in love when forced to choose between being Royal or a 'commoner' (as if she would have been!)

Notachristmaself · 21/12/2024 18:21

Wasn't there a Wikileaks/ Panama papers that revealed her many offshore accounts stuffed full of tax free money, but people fawned over her ' frugality' because she had tupperware boxes of cereal!
I agree George should have a choice over being King, but I don't believe William has any desire to end his family's grip on the Monarchy. He just doesn't want to do anything for it. A bit like Harry, but Harry was stupid enough to think he could make it on his own. I suspect the reason the Sussexes haven't been stripped of their titles is because William doesn't want a precedent where his own kids could be stripped of theirs. Otherwise why would Charles have not done what he said he was going to do and stripped down the Monarchy? He could have equalised male and female children so no one but the heir could be Princes and princesses. It would be easy because Harry is estranged anyway. If William really wanted to set his children free from the Royal life he would have encouraged it. He hasn't. He's just decided to announce that when he's King he's going to reduce his own minimal workload even more.

Edited

That's absolutely shocking!!!

Notachristmaself · 26/12/2024 07:36

I had a look at the Daily Mail comments on their sycophantic articles about the Royals going to church, and was surprised at the absolute scorn on there about people spending Christmas eve and Christmas morning waiting around for the Royals, and about how Kate was an ' inspiration' to cancer sufferers. You don't get to be the most successful online paper by not knowing your audience. They clearly couldn't give a stuff about the Royals, they just print stuff to get the audience riled. Harry said in his book that Camilla leaked stories about him to the press, and she is a friend of Paul Dacre. I wonder if they are publishing crap like this to get Kate slagged off as the King and Queen and the Waleses are in some kind of rivalry. William has hardly stepped up to help his also ailing father with duties.

enzomari · 27/12/2024 07:21

The coverage of the Royal Family over Christmas is always ridiculous, also agree I can’t imagine wanting to stand outside a Church for s glimpse of anyone at any time of year, but the royals at Christmas is just insane to me.

I find it very wrong and very bizarre. The sight of Louis with his arms full of selection boxes and toys was really quite distasteful. This is the son of a billionaire for goodness sake! (I am not blaming the child by the way, but we may as well leave gifts outside mansions in Kensington for all it means). There will be children out there who don't even get a bar of chocolate and yet he's being showered with gifts by lunatic royalists.
And don't get me started on the number of royals or their sidekicks doing that pap walk! Articles on all of them...Sarah Chatto's son's girlfriend came up on Google feed wtaf...who cares about any of them, I don't! I would rather save it for people I know and love.

I do think we will look back in a few decades and see footage of this and think why on earth did we tolerate these children being used like this. It is purely a royal PR exercise and all those children on that royal walk should be treated with more respect for their privacy. Not used to try and gain popularity which is what happens now

Notachristmaself · 27/12/2024 08:16

Completely agree. What on earth possesses people to buy so many toys selection boxes and teddies for these children? I doubt they will even be allowed to keep them, or even want to keep them. Kate is patron of East Anglian Children's hospice. Why not give those kids something to open on Christmas day? They will probably get those toys afterwards anyway, but by the time they get it them, it will be well past Christmas day. For some of those kids, it's their last Christmas yet instead, people will buy huge teddies for Royal kids?

CurlewKate · 27/12/2024 08:20

I'm assuming all the selection boxes are binned anyway. Too risky.

you seem to manage using the internet. A quick google will tell you that they keep next to nothing they are given on walk abouts. It gets donated.
don’t really honestly think they go back home and sit there in glee stuffing their faces with shit chocolate from selection boxes?

Pedallleur · 27/12/2024 09:10

Piece on the radio this am about the Queen referring to to the Orange marches in N.Ireland as that silly marching business. Perhaps she needed to look closer to home was my first thought.

Why so rude?
Of course I know they don't keep the chocolate etc. Why on earth would I think they sit stuffing their faces, never thought that for a minute! Maybe you did, but it didn't enter my head.
But it is given by royalists with the intention that it's for the royal children, not with donating it to anywhere worthy. Which they could do instead, prior to Christmas.
You are missing the whole point of my post. Using the children for positive PR and photo ops for the royal family.

So can the people who buy this crap not Google either? Why are they doing it? Purely performative? ' Oh I've given a Cadburys selection box to Prince Louis!?' Who would not think ' why not give it to someone who needs it?' It's almost worse that the kids aren't stuffing their faces with crap chocolate as you say. Is it not good enough for them?

She also maybe needed to read a book of her own family's history.

I honestly think they will be beside themselves with excitement thinking 'Louis took my selection box!! He'll be eating that as soon as he gets home, I bet he won't eat his turkey now he's eaten my chcolate!!!'

@Notachristmaself They get noticed! They get a buzz from it. They think it gives a connection. They get thanked. Obviously all of this is somewhat shallow and deluded and these people are rather easily pleased. I suspect the RF wishes they didn’t do it but they feel obliged to take gifts and flowers. If they refuse they look aloof and cold. They cannot win really. However people fawn over film stars etc. It’s hardly a different set of beliefs, just a different focus.

Yes I think this is the reason! Someone on the Royal Family board( @Extiainoiapeial I popped in too and escaped!) that some people are lonely and don't have their own family, so see them as their family, which also made sense.
I disagree that it's like film stars or singers though. These people have achieved something, produced entertainment that people admire. What is there to admire about the Royal Family? What have they achieved? Being born? They do charity work. So do many actors and singers, in their spare time when they have done their actual jobs, because they want to, not because they have to in order to be relevant.
It's odd that these uber Royalists are doing this to children for their own gratification. They say they love the Royals but they are staring and shouting at little children and putting them in a position to take selfies with them. It reminds me of the people who wailed and screamed at William and Harry when their mother had just died about how upset they were. Who does that?

This wheeling on of ever less relevant extras to pad the numbers is bizarre and surely counter-productive.

Who wants to see them? Where is the slimmed down monarchy we were promised?

God knows, there must've been about fifty of them doing the pap walk. Of course, not all are taxpayer funded, I suppose they just want to see their faces in the glossy mags or something.
But that deep dive on William's cousin's son's girlfriend was a bit much. It covered everything but her shoe size 🤷😅

Someone on the Royal Family board [...] that some people are lonely and don't have their own family,

There was a very direct satirical post in my feed yesterday:

Are you alone at Christmas ?
Have no one coming round ?
Will you be rattling around in an empty house ?

If so could your local Conservative club pop round and borrow a few chairs for our Christmas do ?
