DM and I were discussing this last night, she's now in her Eighties and used to really like the Queen (not so much Phillip for some reason) but now really isn't bothered and thinks the RF, as is, should be abolished . I've always been a Republican but I was surprised at DM as she always seemed very pro RF but actually was pro the late Queen.

IMHO it seems so past it's sell by date but I'd be interested to know others opinions.

Agreed. They use their soft power to help themselves more like.

They use their soft power to preserve their own power and privilege, enrich themselves and put themselves above the law 🤬

ExhibitionOfYourself · 12/12/2024 14:15

Of course not, silly.

And the politically illiterate are already out on this thread, demonstrating that they don't understand the difference between a PM with actual political power and a purely ceremonial elected Head of State with none. Whom you can elect for a seven year term, or however long is decided, and to whom you pay a civil servant's salary, plus the use of a house, cars, security etc, and who in no way needs to be a politician, because it's not a political role, it's representing the country as HoS, opening Parliament, and cutting ribbons.

Have a widely-liked national treasure. Elect Judi Dench. Elect Joanna Lumley. Elect Trevor McDonald. David Attenborough, Clare Balding. Mo Farah. Michael Caine. Clive Myrie. JK Rowling. Time Berners-Lee. Meera Syal. Brian Cox. Richard Osman.

ethelredonagoodday · 12/12/2024 14:19

I think they need to massively slim down if they're to remain relevant. As others have said, there are far too many hangers on.

They have functioned as useful idiots for the likes of Jimmy savile and Epstein. Some people clearly find the royal seal of approval useful.

SerendipityJane · 12/12/2024 14:20

I never understand the illogicality around "... but I wouldn't want a president."

At least you (a) get asked who should be president and (b) get a chance to kick them out (or just limit their terms).

With a monarch, you are rather stuck with them. There's only one way to get rid of Charlie, and while it might appeal to fans of historical symmetry, I suspect it would be frowned upon and actively prevented.

The head of state isn't you parent - you should be able to replace them.

Yes, this. Don't like your HoS? Elect someone else after four, or seven years. It's not hard.

Extiainoiapeial · 12/12/2024 14:25

No.
But I am realistic and know they aren't going anywhere. Maybe public pressure might in time bring about changes. I only want to see the King/Queen and no one else. Let him sign whatever he has to sign and let the rest just sink into oblivion please

Why would anyone think we would lose the pomp, circumstance, marching bands and rituals I do not know. They obviously haven't been in France on Bastille Day!
It's overrun with pomp!

You wouldn’t be happy with a democratically elected head of state, over someone who is the head of state only because of accident of birth, who otherwise has no other credentials or qualifications for the job? Also, they and their family get a shed load of money, from all of us, to further add to their unearned wealth and privilege. How is any of that better, or fairer, than a democratically elected presidency?

I wouldn't be happy with a presidency because of who the candidates for the position would be : we would end up like the USA with multi- millionaires vying for the job. We could end up with the equivalent of Trump for heavens sake .

If it was a post which could only be filled by people of merit -with education, knowledge and ability - then yes, bring it on.
But the reality would be otherwise. Just another position for the extremely wealthy.

ssd · 12/12/2024 14:26

No absolutely not. They are spongers and liars and cheats. And they are screwing this country rotten. And they wouldn't spit on the forelock tuggers if they were on fire.

Extiainoiapeial · 12/12/2024 14:27

But also, they simply haven’t been able to face the music and create something new, that would fit within modern living and standards

I so agree with this. We are still in the midst of a dusty, antiquated, archaic monarchy fit for the 1950s, not the modern day.

username299 · 12/12/2024 14:30

No. I think we look like anachronistic idiots. All this forelock tugging and palaces while millions use foodbanks.

beguilingeyes · 12/12/2024 14:31

No. I would have liked to have scrapped the whole lot when QEII died.

Cynic17 · 12/12/2024 13:59

Yes. There is huge value in having a non-political Head of State. And they use their "soft power" for good. I haven't seen a better model in other nations.

I agree

What do we have (aside from royal related events already in place) as a several hundred year event that has been celebrated ever since that would equate to Bastille Day? Just making one up for a few marching bands won’t have the same effect.

Yes, we do look like idiots... we have the most costly Monarchy in the whole of Europe. And even without the illness, some of them really don't do a lot, and that trend will continue whilst the Sovereign Grant goes up and up.
That is why I think it should be reduced to just the King & Queen performing duties when necessary.

When Anne had her accident, Kate & Charles ill, William not working... did the world stop? No. We don't really notice if they're not there. How many working royals does a country actually need?

vincettenoir · 12/12/2024 14:40

Given that they were got rid of once for over a decade in 1649, I think it’s hard to believe that they have lasted since. I think the instigation has faced some significant challenges in the last decades. I don’t think they will be gone in the imminent future, but in a couple of generations I think they will be gone.
