Are you in favour of the Royal Family?

DM and I were discussing this last night, she's now in her Eighties and used to really like the Queen (not so much Phillip for some reason) but now really isn't bothered and thinks the RF, as is, should be abolished . I've always been a Republican but I was surprised at DM as she always seemed very pro RF but actually was pro the late Queen.

IMHO it seems so past it's sell by date but I'd be interested to know others opinions.

Can we boot them all out?

WalterdelaMare · 16/12/2024 17:55

The thing I dont understand are the people who buy presents for the children.

Yes, or some crappy bunch of flowers. Do they think they’re going to go home and put them in a vase?

It’s so very odd.

And if that crooked perv Andrew had been allowed to go, there’d no doubt be the forelock-tuggers still waving and smiling at HIM.

I couldn't care less what you think.

Someone who throws around the word "vile" is not unconcerned though.

So you do care.

they must think we are such idiots.

I were head of state of a country whose citizens hadn't worked out how to evict me, I would probably have quite a low opinion of the public too.

It’s called a parasocial relationship .

The royal machine been working on it since they realised there weren’t enough idiots believing that the Windsors had special blood
So now it’s ‘Aww they are just like us’
Apart from the paying tax and being subject to the law of course- not those bits

SerendipityJane · 16/12/2024 18:03

Fixed that for you.

Ukisgaslit · 16/12/2024 18:05

lol! I was thinking of that when I posted

Yes to this. And at some point this year he said to the lunatic royal fans... 'why on earth do you stand here like this' in a sneering way, how bloody dare he. He despises the public. Even those true royalists with the jaunty union flag hats on. The sooner these people realise the royal family don't care two hoots about them, the better.

When he was still going abroad to represent UK business, or whatever nonsense he used to do, my friend had the misfortune of being at a couple of the same events as him. I can confirm that behind the scenes he is indeed extremely sneering and was very rude and ungrateful about his hosts.

Extiainoiapeial · 16/12/2024 18:35

He's up to his neck in it. He disbanded Pitch @ Palace after the Newsnight interview except for the Chinese arm of it. He hasn't closed down all the P@P accounts, particularly not the interest in China.

^Company documents obtained by The Times show that Pitch at Palace Hong Kong Limited, a subsidiary of Andrew’s UK company, was set up in March 2019. Amanda Thirsk, Andrew’s former private secretary, was appointed as a company director of the Hong Kong entity in the same month.
Andrew attended at least one Pitch@Palace China event, held in April 2019 in Shenzhen, which was supported by the Chinese government^

Katesboots · 16/12/2024 19:13

No I've no time for the royals. After the Queen passed I think that should have been it for the RF.

CathyorClaire · 16/12/2024 20:18

Now if that brings happiness to that lady or to anyone else who wants to see the royals who are any of you to make condescending sneering comments.

Unless said lady has had those comments made directly to her on this thread (in which case I've missed all the action) whatever point you're trying to make is irrelevant in respect of this thread.

CathyorClaire · 16/12/2024 20:21

I think that gem took place on the last Christmas pap walk. Demanding to know why the plebs were filming him and telling them they should try standing on his side of the fence.

Utterly bizarre .

😮

Why is this stuff so fucking hard to disentangle?

What we knew:

Thirsk allegedly fell on the same rubber sword as Fawcett the Fence scoring tens of thousands in a BP severance payment while retaining a post as head honcho at P@P. Said post later fell foul of the charity commission for irregular payments made in respect of.

Now we discover Andy never closed the Chinese arm and she's popping up there too 😡

Havalona · 16/12/2024 20:59

Well all I can say at this juncture is that at least we know about Andy's shenanigans.

I doubt any of them have clean hands. We just don't know about the rest of them YET. Apart from huge bags of dosh (the Fortnum and Mason bag was a decoy 😊), the associations with men of ill repute like Savile, Ball and so on. Adultery from the now Head of the CofE. The pure greed of them, I mean how much is enough money for this lot?

I'm not getting good vibes. Most of their images are PR curated. Some fall for it, some don't.

Guavafish1 · 16/12/2024 21:01

No … too much drama

Yes, absolutely. Endlessly dreadfully mediocre candidates and some really bad eggs, and no one’s shown us the door.

CathyorClaire · 16/12/2024 21:31

We just don't know about the rest of them YET.

This series is a very good start:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/series/cost-of-the-crown

Likewise Norman Baker's book 'And What Do You Do' (although pre the Covid financial prop ups and pre a flouncing Harold it might be a little dated now).

GreenClock · 16/12/2024 21:45

The Banned Old Duke of York thinks that people who go to gawp at the Royals walking to church on Christmas Day are odd.

Never thought I’d be agreeing with that fool on anything, yet here we are. They are somewhat eccentric!

The rest of them probably think the same tbh.

Quite. Let's not forget Savile had them in his pocket.

Jimmy Savile caused concern with behaviour on visits to Prince Charles

Former royal aide says TV presenter would greet young female assistants at St James's Palace by 'rubbing lips up their arms'

Notachristmaself · 17/12/2024 12:09

Plus Lauren's Van Der Post, that C of E Bishop accused of paedophilia and Lord Mountbatten- rumours of his shady behaviour around children. Quite a lot of ' errors of judgment' there!

Ukisgaslit · 16/12/2024 17:53

Can we boot them all out?

No. Would require the public to demand that but quite how that would happen is above my pay grade. Would have to have the public up in arms about something but the Govt and the Press would push back. the Church of course. Would need to be a discussion, a steering group, a Parliamentary debate in the fullness of time. You know the story. 100's of years of the Royals having their fingers in all aspects of the Govt means no one is going any time soon

Ukisgaslit · 17/12/2024 14:38

I was joking @Pedallleur as someone before had mentioned Andrew booted from Sandringham

But you’ve made me think.

We are told we live in a democracy . But how do we answer the 5 tests of democracy when we ask these questions of our head of state :

What power have you got ?
Where did you get it from ?
In whose interests do you use it ?
To whom are you accountable ?
How do we get rid of you?

We can’t answer the last two of those questions. so we do not live in a democracy

@Ukisgaslit oh, I do miss Tony Benn
