He appeals to people with the same dark sense of humour, if you don't like it don't go on the show. If he was running round the studio naked that's too far but sexual jokes I'm sorry but he doesn't deserve a media storm over it. Kitchen are dark places the contestants will likely have the same humour.

I’m afraid making sexual comments at work, even as ‘humour’, is sexual harassment: https://www.acas.org.uk/sexual-harassment.

He really ought to keep his mouth shut.

However, does he have a point? Is it being blown up out of proportion because I can't imagine Marcus Waring or Monica putting up with that kind of behaviour.

I'm not condoning his behaviour btw, he may be obnoxious (and there are plenty of those in every workplace) but why is this only coming out now?

I doubt either of them would gave tolerated it.

Dark sense of humour is Charlie Brooker or Dostoyevsky. Wallace is a. Not funny and b. A twat.

I really don't think you understand the phrase 'dark sense of humour'.

Kitchen are dark places

What the hell do you do in your kitchen?

Nah, he's just a grubby little sex pest. Just like all the other grubby media sex pests. They really don't get it. Reeks of desperation tbh. He needs to get some dignity.

microcrocodile · 01/12/2024 16:41

This isn't about 'a few dark jokes', it's about a predator allowed to operate in the workplace.

I was in a team that had to work with him (not in TV), in an industry with lots of young women. We were expressly briefed never ever to leave a colleague alone with him, ever, even to go to the toilet. Always bring someone else to the meeting, even if you didn't 'need' them.

This was not because 'he sometimes makes sexual innuendos'. And of course it would have been better not to work with him but the talent has to be kept happy, right?

And it's worth noting we worked with many celebrities and we did not have this policy towards any others.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 01/12/2024 16:43

He literally was running around naked, except for a sock

I have a dark sense of humour, can be inappropriate and do have a proper dx nd conditions.

Dude is still a twonk, it's pretty obvious really.

Says it all I think.

Normallynumb · 01/12/2024 16:44

When you get yourself into a hole of entirely your own making, it's normal to stop digging.
He's showed himself to be exactly what everyone says he is!
Misogynistic twat

I don't watch bake off much nice but isn't it more innuendos about the food, not said directly to or about a person? Before everyone decides to pile on - mumsnetter of old - I'm asking a question, not stating an opinion.

I do know what you mean, it seems relatively harmless but occasionally it's sat a little uncomfortably, especially when the contestants are somehow a bit vulnerable or under pressure. I was thinking of Katy Brand reporting GW saying something like he 'could munch on her little tarts all day' She wasn't citing it in an outraged way, just that it was sleazy and made her feel really uncomfortable.

WinterCrow · 01/12/2024 16:58

FYI, there's been a thread about Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and certain allegations that's been allowed to stand since April 2018. Catch it while you can.

@biscuitandcake has it spot on. It's not the humour that's the problem it's the way he uses it to humiliate women and make them feel uncomfortable. Sexual jokes can be great, wit and wordplay are a staple of much interaction. But everyone has to feel comfortable with it. What Gregg did was not that.
He is also by all reports a sex pest.

ilovesooty · 01/12/2024 17:02

Hopefully no one will employ him after this, but I suppose someone always has a bar so low they have to limbo dance under it.

SabreIsMyFave · 01/12/2024 17:03

@Anothercoffeeafter3 's comment (at 16.12) is so disgusting and minimising that I can't even find the words to describe how I feel about it. Pretty much victim blaming and 'don't be silly' and 'where's yer sense of humour?!' DISGRACEFUL!

I had this shit from grubby, pervy, slimy men in the 1980s and 1990s when I was in my teens, and 20s, and 30s, Leering over me, letching at me, groping me, and making lewd and gross 'sexual' remarks. Whenever I reported any given man I was either: laughed at and told to grow up, OR told to suck it up and stop making something out of nothing, OR told that I was attracting these comments and attention because of how I was dressed.

Anyone who says it's just banter and a dark sense of humour what Gregg Wallace has done needs to get a fucking clue. Only a MAN would say this, or a woman who has NEVER had any man try it on with her, or say anything pervy! I envy any woman this has never happened to, because it's horrible. Especially when you are told it's your fault, or you need to grow up and 'suck it up!' I put up with a LOT of shit from men because I knew if I complained I would not be taken seriously.

Gregg Wallace is an utter cunt. And he clearly went to the Andrew Tate school of charm. I hope he never works in TV again, and that the courts throw the book at him.

ArabellaScott · 01/12/2024 17:04

If Philip Schofield and Boy George still get gigs, I'm sure he can too. It's astonishing what is tolerated, really.

Gettingbysomehow · 01/12/2024 17:04

He s one of these pathetic old fools who are obsessed with sex and behave like one of the inbetweeners never growing up.
No wonder he's been married 4 times. He must pester his wives for sex 24/7.
I find him repulsive.

bombastix · 01/12/2024 17:06

It’s kind of amazing when you think of the demographic who watch Masterchef. This investigation by Lewis Silkin is clearly designed to deal with future claims which are worse than banter. They want to know whether he’s not just a mouthy creep but an active one too.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 01/12/2024 16:04

I'm getting more of a 'They're all just frigid lesbians' vibe from it tbh

Fairly certain that’s one to be the next video. He’s ticked off the ‘women of a certain age’ and ‘women make sexual innuendo comments too’ boxes. They are all lesbians has to be the next box.?

greengreyblue · 01/12/2024 17:08

Just heard Kirstie Allsopp’s comment. He sounds like a menace!

Scrimt · 01/12/2024 17:09

I hope he keeps on talking 🥰

crumblingschools · 01/12/2024 17:16

@Anothercoffeeafter3 maybe we should be looking at all workplaces and wondering why some are excused as dark places. Anyway most of the contestants on Masterchef aren't from kitchen workplaces, apart from the professional version. Bit like the acting/entertainment profession have got away with it for so long, excused that it is common place, it's what happens etc etc. Finally people are getting a voice and hopefully it won't be common place in the future.
