Bad woke = treating women in work with respect in line with sexual harassment laws
Good woke = trying to get away with the above by hiding behind autism as a lame assed crap justification.

Bad woke = women standing up for themselves in line with their legal right and against a culture which turns them all into Cassandra
Good woke = being able to refer to the menopause as a legitimate reason for women's behaviour

Bad woke = being caught out for racist jokes
Good woke = being a 60 year old bloke who gets to take his kit off at every opportunity to show of to all the 'liberated women'

Funny how it all just looks like good old fashioned sexism.

Just heard Kirstie Allsopp’s comment. He sounds like a menace!

He does, but why is she just coming out with this now? She was powerful and wealthy enough to say something a long time ago. I guess it's convenient for her now?

ohwhataluvverly · 01/12/2024 17:25

How can he not see that younger/junior/lacking status women are very likely going to not complain because they would fear (probably rightly) that a dominant aggressive highly paid celebrity start of the show would be backed over them?

That is is precisely going to take a middle class (for which here read educated or at least more educated than Greg (one g) Wallace) of a certain age (for which read old enough to have the confidence to challenge inappropriate behaviour) celebrity (for which read enough social and BBC political status to have the confidence to challenge a well established celebrity presenter) woman to raise this in the first place.

He probably is so thick that he really thinks all the younger runners, non-celeb women he pestered whether contestants or runners or show staff who didn't complain 'loved it."

What a vile vile man. His whole tone in that video is so offensive. If I didn't care about it before, I certainly do now. And we all now he's lying about the numbers of women making sexual jokes. I bet out of 4,000 contests the number of women who voluntarily instigated a sexual joke (as opposed to embarrassed playing along with him due to pressure and expectation to make a scene) is either zero or one or two if that.

Mnetcurious · 01/12/2024 17:26

He’s just confirming that’s he’s exactly the type of person to make inappropriate comments, with that response.

I guess when these things happen, you’re shocked but in isolation you just move on. I would think she’s supporting those that have spoken up as it adds weight to their argument.

Lalgarh · 01/12/2024 17:28

One encounter with him was tweeted by this woman. The journalists are now contacting this woman but they're not so bothered about his alleged racial stuff to her.

I worry about TV channels putting out fires rather than deal with a dysfunctional culture that throws people with less power under the bus to keep the talent happy. If I see a misogynist tw@t at a bar, I’ll get out of his way. I don’t have to put up with it …if I am able to escape it.
At work though you can’t escape. I can try to get another job but the same culture seems pretty prevalent in tv. I can muster my inner strength and put in a complaint in the hope that this offensive behaviour stops … but this is likely to be ignored and may adversely impact my career. Or I have to shut up and put up with a misogynistic dickhe@ds comments and hope I’m not alone with him, as producers pat him on the head. Sickening.

hopefor25 · 01/12/2024 17:30

BBC are throwing him under a bus. Yeah he's a prick but fuck me so are lots of men. And women, in that organisation. BBC have come out saying they will deal with their internal culture and yet all it shows is that this Times columnist below is bang on.

Behaviour should be dealt with at the point it happens - not used as a way to mitigate damage on the broadcaster.

I'd respect the women more if they came out saying - why did the bbc not deal with this when i reported it? Instead of a media trial which will damage someone's career and life.

If he is to be believed as regards his claim of lack of filter due to asd, sure it doesn't excuse it but for heavens sake he could and should have had the support or consequences to change his behaviour a long time ago. The bandwagon is a joke- this is how society fails people who might need help.

Those in the spotlight are not exempt from mental health issues.

Whatever Gregg Wallace did, weaselly execs are the true poison

He appeals to people with the same dark sense of humour, if you don't like it don't go on the show. If he was running round the studio naked that's too far but sexual jokes I'm sorry but he doesn't deserve a media storm over it. Kitchen are dark places the contestants will likely have the same humour.

Why would they? They are not professional chefs.

Nottodaygoaway · 01/12/2024 17:32

I saw his post this morning on Insta. My jaw hit the floor.

So not self-aware, so didn't think about why more women didn't speak up, thinks he's not to blame for anything then a classic DARVO.

I don't watch anything he was in but I was aware of his many marriages and the "geezer" (or so he thinks) image. I know one of his wives had died. I know he thinks it's banter & plenty of people on Insta think the same. No Sense Of Humour etc.

What Greg doesn't understand is the difference between being in on a joke and being the target of one. Sexual harassment is never funny. He's an immature manchild. He thinks his behaviour is ok because people laugh along with him, until they stop doing so. He doesn't understand why people are now saying, nope, not appropriate.

So he could go the Russell Brand route - "I've found religion" - or be checked into rehab for six months to go on a "personal journey". Then he"ll come out full of regrets - "I'm sorry to all the women I dribbled over" - and end up doing a reality show for channel 5 or be a food critic for GB News before sinking into obscurity. Best way, I think.

Ah, there is always a way to blame the women.

A friend has sent me an image of a T-shirt saying "I’m a middle-class woman of a certain age". Not sure if it’s a real thing or not (she doesn’t know either) but it woukd make a fantastic Christmas present! Anyone know anything about it?

I think you have a more favourable view of Kirsty Allsopp than I do. I'm not particularly forgiving to wealthy, powerful people, who turn a blind eye to these things when they're in a position to do something about it. Most of these celebrities are all about themselves.

I do know what you mean, it seems relatively harmless but occasionally it's sat a little uncomfortably, especially when the contestants are somehow a bit vulnerable or under pressure. I was thinking of Katy Brand reporting GW saying something like he 'could munch on her little tarts all day' She wasn't citing it in an outraged way, just that it was sleazy and made her feel really uncomfortable.

Yes, the munching comment is awful.

hopefor25 · 01/12/2024 17:37

@PandoraSox zero blame for any woman who has suffered abuse. But come out and deal with it head on if you feel the need to. The piece linked to is not about blaming women it's about the lack of accountability that his employer showed. Sure he is not helping himself right now, but be clear these headlines are very much written to show a certain narrative that doesn't necessarily communicate the whole truth of what he may have said.

I agree. The BBC (and other media orgs) have a horrendous record when it comes to this stuff. Complaints had been made about Russell Brand for well over a decade, but the BBC and Channel 4 brushed them under the carpet.

The whole industry is pretty rotten.

But what he said to her is just strange and wouldn’t send you running to complain . As I said, in isolation you’d just conclude that he’s a twat and try not to work with him again. But with the benefit of this wider knowledge, it’s different .

ohwhataluvverly · 01/12/2024 17:38

Please stop blaming women or asking why people are saying it now - when many raised it in the past with the BBC.

If you yourself have ever been in a position to make a complaint about inappropriate behaviour of someone you worked with you would realise it was a scary thing to do. You are frightened that you won't be believed or told you are silly and need to deal with it or that you might be the subject of an investigation that concludes you lied and that you lose your job and are blackballed in your whole industry. Imagine, really imagine, what it would be like if you wanted to make this kind of allegation against the most powerful and important person where you work - this is how it would feel - shit scary.

The fears are huge. Safety in numbers is a big thing in these situation.

Newsenmum · 01/12/2024 17:38

You clearly know the square root of bugger all about how hard it would be to be the lone voice speaking up about an abuser, particularly a famous one who has the backing of e.g. the BBC

I agree. When does humour and innuendo become offensive?

Alison Hammond jumping on the back of Dylan wasn't appropriate

I’m pretty sure that saying to a female contestant who was squeamish about handling raw fish "Watching you try to touch a fish is like watching a rapist do foreplay" crosses the line between humour/innuendo and offensiveness.

I’m not a fan of Kirsty Allsopp but TBF she may have reasons for feeling she couldn’t speak out at the time.

However, have to admit it irks me when women who really can afford (quite literally) to speak out with much less risk to their losing their home, reputation or career (and in some cases are the first to give their opinion on other issues) jump on the bandwagon once others have been much braver in speaking up.

I felt the same about Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie coming out about Weinstein during Me Too. Unlike the women who first spoke out, they were both well-connected in Hollywood from the get-go, with parents who were big in the film industry. Unlike women like Ambra Gutierrez.

But, I guess whatever their background, women can feel frightened, intimidated or threatened by sexual harassment and sexual assault.
