Just heard his comments on the news….unbelievable.

For those who would rather be in the same room as Gregg Wallace than the GBBO presenters, remember that Inside the Factory was not permitted to return to the Nestle factory due to his behaviour: factories apparently take employee welfare legislation much more seriously than broadcasting organisations.

I have a family member who works at the Nestle factory. I remember at the time him saying that GW was absolutely awful.

the80sweregreat · 03/12/2024 13:39

I bet he rocks up doing a reality show next year.
I'd love him to give ' SAS ' a try and Jason Fox give him a very hard time whilst he whines about ' wokery gone mad ' it was the wimmin who had it in for me

SheilaFentiman · 03/12/2024 13:57

PotOfViolas · 03/12/2024 13:34

I'd much rather be alone in a room with people who have never been accused of being intimidating behind the scenes than I would GW. But then I'm not dismissive of all the women who have spoken up about GW intimidating behaviour, plus the people at Nestlé who banned him from coming back.

Agree - and The Guardian article linked above shows he has no compunction about inappropriate sexual conversation in a lift in front of unknown women either.

The BBC have just pulled the Christmas Specials.

Greenkindness · 03/12/2024 14:02

To be fair I do find a lot of the GBBO innuendo a bit cringe, but it does seem like most people are in on the joke. Sometimes contestants look like they want to tell the presenters to get lost while they are concentrating and I don’t blame them
but I’d never want to go on anyway! These shows are all about ratings and what works. Would be fascinating to find out what truly happens behind the scenes.

GW sounds vile though, really crude and lewd and more overtly sexual.

LlynTegid · 03/12/2024 14:03

PotterHead1985 · 03/12/2024 13:58

Good.

Though I wonder if the viewing figures for last night's Masterchef may have influenced them, or (unlikely) someone intending to sue the BBC if they did not act.

SheilaFentiman · 03/12/2024 14:04

Hotflushesandchilblains · 03/12/2024 13:14

I agree, and while I liked a lot of what he said, there was one bit that did not sit well - where he seemed to be saying GW was just like that, and this is why people did not take it seriously. Maybe I did not hear it right, but I was surprised as most of what he said was spot on.

Was RO perfect? No. But I would rather hear a good, strong if not perfect critique from him than total silence from some #MiddleClassMenOfACertainAge

Probably easier/fairer to pull the Xmas Celeb special than halt the run of regular contestants who have worked over many weeks and who may end up with career opportunities when they do well.

Would GGreg appear in a show that was likely to have him ousted first or women of a certain age were likely to put perform him?

He's done that already with strictly. And he blamed a woman for that.

He's arrogant but he's also deeply deeply insecure.

No one is more aware of how talentless he is, than him. Deep down.

Eyestothehorizon558 · 03/12/2024 14:58

Very interesting reading about the fall out and reactions to GW’s appalling conduct.

Fascinating how the very British subject of class has blown up alongside the sexism.

Of course the underlying issue is male privilege and aggression. If Janet Street Porter found GW aggressive on MC then I think it’s fair to say he is! And as mentioned previously, this sexualised behaviour is always about power and dominance and shoring up inadequate male egos.

Btw, I wonder what John Torode thinks about it all? I haven’t seen any reaction from him yet?

Anyway, about the the class issue; Vanessa Feltz and Marina Hyde have both alluded to the fact that GW was in so many programmes and basically over-promoted at the BBC, because he represented to them, an insulting Jack the lad stereotype of the working class man.

So hope production companies from now on will take heed and make more documentaries and programmes which feature working class people without the negative connotations.

I can't answer for this poster, but would assume he doesn't literally wave his willy about.

It's an oft used expression to describe men who brag, IE my car's bigger, loadsa money, fancier holidays, kids go to private school, I've got bigger more expensive better everything than anyone else..

Yes I know I love the expression “willy waving” and use it frequently! It was just that, given the context of (gr)Egg getting his out at work, I wasn’t sure if they meant it literally or not. Thank god not - although at least that would easier to report…

I know yes insecure, but he's also spectacularly lacking in awareness. I hope he doesn't do SAS, but if he does, yes, he absolutely will be torn to shreds and shown up by much better people / women.

It very much reminds me of John Barrowman doing SAS this year. He whined on about being cancelled and him getting his genitals out all the time was all just blown out of proportion blah blah. (So still no accountability there either). He also lasted, ooh, about 45 minutes before chucking his toys out of his pram and saying the show wasn't for him and walking away. I think he was wailing " This isn't Who I Am" or some such narcissistic nonsense.

Very similar characters with massively over inflated ego's.

I suppose it comes down to whether these people are 'just' stupid, inappropriate and deluded, or how much of a power trip / intent is there. The end result is the same. It's all predatory behaviour, and they know that.

Typo

Actually I understand he did really get his willy out, albeit covered it with a sock.

Happy to be corrected.

It also says he was sexually abused aged 8. Perhaps decent counselling would have helped him deal with this rather than spreading the problem.

What have I just read. JC.

John Barrowman on SAS was epic in its spectacular meltdown.

Though I bet whoever booked him was ultimately disappointed because they didn't get to draw it out for a few episodes!

Wallace fancies himself as 'Ard due to his exercise regime and his Millwall days.

This being the case I wouldn't want to guess at Wallace's mental state right now

Though hopefully someone will sit on his head to avoid him saying anything worse Confused

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 03/12/2024 17:15

@SheilaFentiman it absolutely does harm women. How many female production assistants, camera technicians (etc) on the first step of the ladder give up and do something else because some dickhead who has power at work is creepily interested in their sex life or gets his dick out at the office party?

This and it is ALWAYS involving young women, on the first rung of the TV production career ladder with no power. So and they (and Wallace) know they can't kick up a fuss because they'll be the one who is moved on and the TV industry closes ranks. And then why don't they get another job in telly? Probably because nobody wants a difficult woman on their set, making the men in charge feel uncomfortable when all their trying to do is take an interest in their sex life and touch their bum...but just in a friendly way obvs.

They could defer the rest of the current series until early next year, requiring the production company to re-edit and remove as much of him as possible, and definitely remove all offensive material masquerading as "banter". There must be plenty of other footage that could be used.

Then retire the whole series for several years (never, ever succumb to the sunk cost fallacy in regard to sets)

I am pretty sure someone is doing overtime in the edit suite right now to minimise any remaining banter!

I think the Beeb's approach is a reasonable compromise; you don't, that's fine.

I thought what Osman said on TRIE was interesting - that GW might not watch himself back and not understand quite how many of his offensive "jokes" never made the edit.

How can you say that childhood sexual abuse is the same as him saying the stuff he's said not to mention running around naked apart from a sock on his penis ? That's what you inferred with your "spreading the problem" comment. Think.

I studied media.

I didn't even ATTEMPT a career in the media in the end because of what I knew and learned about the industry whilst studying. I hit a point where I just went 'this really isn't for me'.

The level of nepotism, how London centric it was (that's changed a lot) and the rampant issue of imbalances in power and sex were the three key issues.

@RedToothBrush the rampant issue of imbalances in power and sex

I'd bet the farm (if I had one) that this part hasn't changed very much, if at all.
