What’s the best bit of advice you’ve ever received on MN?

For me, there are loads, but there is one thing that is really working out for me.

On one of my many distraught threads about 2 toxic women I have to deal with in my DH’s family, I was told to “drop the rope” and “do nothing”.

I’ve been doing this for 3 years now, and it has transformed my MH and life around these people. It’s still a DH problem, yes. I just “do nothing”. When they texted me, I just diverted them to DH. I left him to arrange all meet ups, communication, remembering birthdays, everything. Turns out, it doesn’t get done if I’m not doing it. I grey rocked, dropped the rope, did nothing, and am still doing nothing, and I am now seeing them once a year where I smile and say nothing and grey rock it. It’s absolute bliss.

So, who’d have thought that doing nothing could change so much? Its amazing.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever got on MN and how has it helped you?

Tomato based sauce stains on clothing - hang them up in a bright window, and the sun bleaches them out! It's saved me a fortune on school polo tops.

Also works for curry stains.

@OooPourUsACupLove you can?!

I've learnt lots on here but the best advice was on how to get an EHCP for my daughter. Mumsnet got me through two tribunals!

I also got great advice when I was having an absolute meltdown as a pregnant, beginner teacher.

Would you share how you tackled the EHCP please? My daughter is in desperate need of help for my grandson.

Mine was 16 years ago...

No need to sterilise baby bottles. Also how to make formula with boiling water and cooled boiling water so it's the right temperature.

Why no need?

GrannyNannyMagratandGreebo · 29/11/2024 20:51

Mine was it's better to have parents that are happier apart than to have warring parents still together (I shudder at that thought).

Also, the stuff that constitutes emotional abuse is still abuse 😔

To get help with debt problems by contacting Christians Against Poverty. Amazing support given

Thought of another: it's an invitation not a summons

Pippyls67 · 29/11/2024 22:16

No need to buy dog toys just put an empty plastic bottle in a sock or the cut off sleeve of an old jumper and tie the top.

Lasagne bed! (Waterproof sheet then sheet then waterproof sheet then sheet), total game-changer for when DD was little.

Another bedding one for when switching from baby sleeping bag to duvet: put single duvet horizontally on the bed and tucked under each side, much more likely to stay on all night.

Finally, the most wise words which I use quite regularly as a clumsy person: a dropped knife has no handle. You’re welcome.

A dropped knife has no handle? I don’t get it??

JawsCushion · 29/11/2024 22:27

Nothing to grab hold of if you drop it @Pippyls67. As in, you're bound to grab the blade and cut yourself.

Don't leave your washing out overnight because spider willies

on daily checking your banking - to save the pence in your account.

most of us have direct debits and daily spending going out throughout the month.
Everyday I check my bank - then save whatever pence is in there.
example - if I have £48.64 I save the 64p

I usually accumulate quite a few ££ every month - every 6 weeks it pretty much pays for my well deserved manicure!

@Buddyboy my bank does this automatically to me: with starling I have a FUN pot set up and all transactions are rounded up to the next pound and added to that account. It’s great way to save!

Whiteblanket · 29/11/2024 23:10

@GrannyNannyMagratandGreebo

Ok so the thing about sterilising was that basically it's kind of impossible.

The best thing to do if formula feeding is to wash bottles in hot soapy water, rinse and air dry.

All bits of this process are important.

I have tried to search for the original poster as she had preemie twins but can't find the post.

I am WELL out of this stage. It predates perfect prep machines but in keeping with the thread it was the best advice I had from MN.

rhianfitz · 29/11/2024 23:20

No is a complete sentence.

Butterfingers1977 · 30/11/2024 00:06

The Mumsnet calm collective have me solid advice during the last 5 years of my abusive marriage ,,- it comforted me , gave super practical advice and held my hand in the middle of the loneliest nghts. And for that i am eternally grateful and wish I could thank all the posters who helped me x

Sosijiz · 30/11/2024 00:13

Don’t leave your clothes outside on the line otherwise they’ll be darked on.

And don’t trust spiders as they rub their willies on your face at night as you sleep.

That an anal fissure that doesn't heal is likely to be a fungal infection. Got a four year long AF to heal after two weeks by washing my nethers with nizoral shampoo.

What variant of nizoral shampoo please?

pikkumyy77 · 30/11/2024 03:00

Someone just said this: “you can’t be a lifeboat for someone who keeps jumping overboard.” That has struck a chord.

Pippyls67 · 30/11/2024 06:32

Not mums net but a fellow mum - and in the spirit of the post I’ll pass it on-
You can’t help your child out of a well if you get in there with them and push. You need to get yourself out first then lean in with others holding you and pull.

freerangefool · 30/11/2024 07:44

To LTB

Aria999 · 30/11/2024 01:45

What variant of nizoral shampoo please?

I can't remember. So long as it has the antifungal ingredient, it should work.

blackheartsgirl · 30/11/2024 08:01

To leave the bastard.

And I did 😂
