I've started a new one. Please join us and share the boring and mundane things happening in your world. It will be calming for all.

Welcome to all regulars, lurkers, and new contributors! Everyone is welcome to join.

Note there is one minor change to the thread title. "tell me your dull news" has been changed to "tell us...". I thought it was more in keeping with the spirit of the thread.

Fell asleep really early...then woke up wide awake at the wrong time !!

Put TV on (with headphones!) ...only to hear the dreadful news about the air crash in America 😕.

So sorry for anyone who it might have affected..

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/01/2025 04:42

Bizzey, yes, watching news about it here, too. It's one of my greatest fears.

MyrtleStrumpet · 30/01/2025 12:01

I only just found out. It's so cold as well and sounds completely avoidable. I keep away from the news at the moment so only catch bits in small chunks.

I had a mammogram yesterday and I'm sure it's fine (regular screening) but it looked like my sentinel lymph node was bright white. I'm sure that's normal but my mum had cancer in her sentinel node and had to have chemo etc. She was much older than I am. I couldn't sleep much last night but I didn't feel anxious about the mammogram till today.

Our broadband went down this morning so we've had to reboot various boxes, which was annoying. Not much else going on.

mathanxiety · 30/01/2025 16:01

I've given up watching the news too, but had a text from a DD who lives in DC last night. What a horrible thing to happen.

MissC your kitchen looks so nice. They're working fast.

havoc sorry to hear of your water damage.

We're going to have unheard-of 50°F temps today. I've noticed some shoots coming up in the backyard.

I had an oil change yesterday and a general inspection of my car. The mechanic told me I need rear brake pads and two new belts in the engine, plus new air filters. I can do the air filters myself.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 30/01/2025 16:59

We have daffodils out. And it's still January! in the old days they'd be out half-April or in May

@MyrtleStrumpet I hope you get the results fast, jsut to put your mind at rest.

Older son is still showing signs of returning humanity instead of snarling teen, which is lovely. Young one has hair down to the bottom of his shoulder blades. It's so long that it's starting to get into his food, but he refuses to tie it back "because then I'll look like a girl"!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/01/2025 17:16

Awww Ducky, your ds must be so cute, though. 😍

Got to sleep after midnight and have been awake since 6. 🤦‍♀️ Tried to quietly lie on the couch watching tv, then baby woke up again. Havoc woke shortly after. 🤦‍♀️
Have now had two lattes and a bagel with pb&j. I usually pop them in the oven to warm. It makes them much nicer. I've branched out to peach jam with mango for a change.

Our sunny and cold weather is now done. Chilly and rainy 3c now. Med appt later, so I need to get dressed soon.

MissConductUS · 30/01/2025 17:52

Havoc, your new countertop is lovely, and I love the matching backsplash. I'm sure you're thrilled to have everything back in working order.

I went to walk around the reservoir and turned back after half of my usual distance. It's very windy and cold today. We're heading back into freezio. 😁

I saw my first daffodil in early January but in a very sheltered spot in a church grounds. Last year we went to north Scotland in late April and were surprised to see them everywhere as they had finished where we live. My snowdrops are out which I always see as a sign of good things to come.
Peach/mango jam sounds very exotic, don’t know if it’s sold here. I grew up eating the jam of fruits we grew or could pick locally. So damsons, plums, blackberries and greengages. As a result I only really buy strawberry now but actually none of us eat much of that.
I’m not even going to mention the peanut butter, not sure how that can be mixed with jam. You normally have such good taste in food Havoc 🤣

MissConductUS · 30/01/2025 19:55

Dandy, most toddlers in North America will tell you that peanut butter and jelly (or jam) is the food of the gods. Adults have been known to eat it too.

It’s been really cold here today, though I am a freezer. I can be sat here in a thermal vest and a jumper and DH is wandering about in a t shirt. No sign of any daffodils yet, though they do tend to appear before the end of February so that people can wear them for St David’s Day on March 1st. For our non British contingent he is the patron saint of Wales.

Miss it’s very common for some Welsh speakers using it colloquially to add ‘io’ or ‘o’ to the end of any word to Welsh-ify it 😁. So your freezio would be perfectly acceptable

MissConductUS · 30/01/2025 20:38

Shoes, perhaps I have some Welsh heritage that I was unaware of.

The painter was off working on some other project today, and the rest of the kitchen work is on hold until the worktops are installed on Monday. The cats looked very pleased with themselves when I left for work this morning without confining them in the bedroom. Unfortunately for them, the painter returns tomorrow and it's back to cat prison for them.

We're very late with snowdrops etc here, we're not that far north but high altitude (Peak District) the snowdrops in my garden are easily 2 - 3 weeks from flowering.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/01/2025 21:56

Math, I'm very impressed with your mechanical ability. I aspire to do more in that regard. Water damage was a very minor leak that festered slowly over time - luckily.
Miss, it's just laminate and looks much better than I anticipated. I can live with cupboards not matching for now. Cost was a fair $1800 all in for counter, cupboard, new sink, pvc pipes and labour.

Deathraystare · 31/01/2025 06:39

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 29/01/2025 20:22

Ooh Miss if you’re in the UK and a certain age you would say “scorchio” to the warmer weather, even if sarcastically. From a sketch show called ‘The Fast Show’ which spawned many catchphrases, well it did for my generation anyway 😁

Edited

Loved it!!!!

Deathraystare · 31/01/2025 06:51

Hi Everyone.

I just ordered some Ice storm off Amazon. My friend recommended it for any aches and pains. I had something similar but she thinks this is better. I did not like deep heat because if an area is inflamed why put more heat on it??

I hope everything is fine and dandy with those improving their homes and that everyone is feeling better now.

Returned a few parcels at the post office (In a WH Smith so it may not be there much longer. Day off so there was a lot of things I could have done but soon felt whacked out and decided to go home. I do need to do some food shopping so may do so when I finish work around 2p. Due to my circumstances I am in temp accommodation and so have to use the work fridge/freezer for my food so cannot exactly get a freezer full of stuff. I am lucky that I am still working though so that's ok.

Seem to have constipation. I did eat quite a bit of fruit last night, especially cherries, which normally works for me - not that I have a habit of being constipated. I just hope I don't have to go suddenly at work! I thought the Chinese lunch I had would have um.. pushed things along. Normally do not like Chinese but do like veg and noodles. There is a vegan buffet place near me. Not fancy and they do a lot of fake meat which I avoid but do love the tofu, mixed veg, noodles and rice, also the spring rolls and the vegan toast stuff. Normally I have seconds but as part of me is bunged up I couldn't. I might have to go to the chemist this afternoon. I do get worried because mum always had problems with her bowels and ended up with bowel cancer.

Got in work today at 6am on the dot! I work today from 7-2 so sneaked in a bit of mumsnet!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 31/01/2025 08:46

Death, sounds like you need to speak with your doctor, discuss family medical history and book a colonoscopy.

It's chilly and raining here. It's gone up to 4c now, so I'm doubting snow this weekend.

sueelleker · 31/01/2025 12:19

Deathraystare; Biofreeze is also excellent.

Deathraystare · 31/01/2025 13:59

@Mumtobabyhavoc

I did mention when I wasn't getting any kits through but they were completely non interested. I now get the poo kit and always ok.

Got some senokot now! I have a feeling when it works all hell will break lose as I had rather a lot of fruit yesterdAY!

DandyDandylion · 31/01/2025 15:08

I agree biofreeze is excellent. When I had knee pain I kept it by the loo and put it on each time I dropped my trousers. So much easier than icing for hard to reach areas.
We are off to look at a potential small car today for ds to learn to drive in. He isn’t 17 yet but can start learning the gears on the drive and this looks like a nice example, one careful owner.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 31/01/2025 16:47

Dandy, how exciting for your ds! Over her very few cars are manual now and I seem to recall hearing this will ve the last year for some to even be made for the N. Am market. I miss my 5-speed Honda. I loved driving that car!
Death, if you have concerns you must strongly advocate for yourself. I use a TENS for my back and neck. Have you tried one? Physios often use them.

Pretty tired here. Had med appt last night at hospital and wasn't home til 12:30am. Didn't get to sleep until 2:30am. Ugh.

MyrtleStrumpet · 31/01/2025 18:15

Gosh I hope everyone's aches and pains and toilet issues resolve satisfactorily.

The bathroom design company have designed something that costs £6,200 in materials. They've included an offset quadrant shower which is 1000mm x 800mm where we currently have a 900mm x 900mm quadrant shower. Not sure if that will be a better experience. As these are a deluxe company, I'm impressed it's only £6k.

They've included tiles and I'm inclined to put up acrylic screens instead because the labour will be much cheaper but DH is OK with it as we're only going to do this once. We will have to take the tiles off and let the walls dry out in any case.

MyrtleStrumpet · 31/01/2025 18:16

I completed a wooden chocolate factory model yesterday and looked for the instructions for a clock model (see stock image of finished article) that I abandoned a few years ago when I snapped the clock handle. I was able to find them!!! And then I found I could order spare parts. These will take a couple of weeks to arrive as it's Chinese New Year.

I also ordered a book nook kit from Temu which will take 10 days to arrive. I know it's exploitative but it's also £20 cheaper. I am a hypocrite. 😩

Havoc, you got very good value for money with those kitchen repairs. And I agree about manual transmission cars being almost extinct here, unless it's a high end sports car like a Porsche.

The menthol based topical treatments are helpful, but they don't do anything to reduce the inflammation. They work by creating a sensation of coldness that crowds out the pain.

Myrtle, 1000mm is just 39 inches. That souns like a rather small shower. I'll have to measure mine when I get home. The 6k does sound reasonable. Your model is amazing!

I spoke with the painter briefly this morning before leaving for work. He thought he'd be close to finishing by the end of the day today. I am so looking forward to having the worktops installed on Monday. I rang the company to request that they come first thing Monday morning, which they agreed to do.

DS got his laptop for his new job yesterday. It took almost two weeks to get it for him. He's celebrating by working from home today. He had to text me for the wifi password, which I was expecting.

It's above freezing today, and we've had some rain, so we've entered fogio and meltio. 😁

Yes, the entire room is 1850mm x 1800mm. The shower has a curved door so it looks lovely. I just don't want to spend £6k on materials and another £6k on labour for such a tiny room. The walls are 2400mm tall!

Thank you for complimenting the model. I love making them but it's been stuck on my desk for over a year until this week. I'm procrastinating while looking for a job!
