I've started a new one. Please join us and share the boring and mundane things happening in your world. It will be calming for all.

Here is a link to the prior thread:

Welcome to all regulars, lurkers, and new contributors! Everyone is welcome to join.

Note there is one minor change to the thread title. "tell me your dull news" has been changed to "tell us...". I thought it was more in keeping with the spirit of the thread.

So sorry to hear about children being ill. I do hope they get better soon!

It's raining here and windy and the wind direction is right at the house so it feels cold. DH took his bulky 6'2" frame and pushed his weight against the French windows so they closed more firmly. It's a tad warmer now.

Trying to summon energy and motivation to do something useful. As you can see, I'm here. Not sure if it's useful 🤣 but it's more entertaining.

MissConductUS · 27/01/2025 14:39

You can add my DS to the list of sick "kids" (he's almost 25). He felt poorly on Friday and was running a small fever on Saturday. DH had to run to the pharmacy for a covid test, as all of ours had expired. He was negative for covid, thank goodness, and was feeling well enough to go to work this morning.

I hope everyone else's DC are on the mend.

The builders are not at the house today, so the cats have had three days off from the chaos. They probably think it's over and done. Everyone comes back tomorrow. We've told the worktop vendor to start cutting the slabs. I've asked our contractor to press them for the earliest possible installation date. We like the look of the kitchen so much that we've agreed on a price with the contractor to paint the laundry room and main hallway of the house to match. Her painter did a lovely job in the kitchen, including some sheetrock repairs. He can paint while we wait for the worktops.

I had some kind of a bug. NHS Scotland told me to isolate for 48hrs afters symptoms had passed, so that’s my time up now.

Aches and pains Friday; retching and stomach trouble at 2 in the morning on Sat and then again at 1pm.

Was finally able to check for storm damage today. Some loose willow panels, but haven’t spotted anything else. A neighbour further up the hill has been informed that his chimney is “fucked”.

MissConductUS · 27/01/2025 18:30

Weary, it sounds like you had Noro virus or something similar.

We've been informed that the decorative fake doors for the back of the peninsula will be delivered tomorrow, which is great luck as the carpenter will be at the house to do some other things. And the five missing cabinet handles are supposed to arrive to the vendor today and should be delivered tomorrow with the panels.

The reservoir is heavily iced over. The second picture is of the Hudson River in the distance. It is about 60% covered in ice. The river runs north to south, so we're getting large ice flows from up river where it's been even colder than here.

Morning all 🌞
It's a sunny 2c here. Rain is supposed to arrive Thursday/Friday with a decent chance if snow over the weekend as temps are looking to drop below zero. 🤞
Contractor is here removing an end cupboard to be replaced along with the countertop. Timeline is three days including today. I'm quite impressed with him so far. Super accommodating, easy-going and respectful. Took care laying sheets down to protect floors and is trying to minimize inconvenience to me.

MissConductUS · 27/01/2025 19:09

Havoc, are you having a bit of a kitchen remodel too? Contractors seem more concerned about cleaning up after themselves than they used to. I think it's because of online reviews.

Miss, just what's absolutely necessary atm. Kitchen faucet was leaking a little and the water damaged the counter undetected. The whole kitchen is due, though.

Sorry to hear that. See if you can hold out for a few years. I can't imagine the inconvenience with a toddler and a baby.

Hopefully, my kitchen remodeling sage has been educational for you. 😂

Miss, yours and Penguins. Luckily, I'm good with my stuff, iykwim. Take care to use cutting boards, thorough cleaning... it's just old, drawers are starting to sag and are a bit banged up. I might try a diy facelift to the kitchen to try and get a new look, though.

Well I’ve just caught up on a few days posts as have had a busy weekend. So sorry to hear about all the illnesses there seems to be a lot going round. Our relatives funeral has been put back into February as the crematorium has a backlog. I don’t know if that’s normal at this time of year or because it’s a particularly bad year for things like Covid and flu finishing people off.
After the windy storm blew through we had a second named storm which dumped tonnes of rain yesterday. DH and I did our local walk today which goes through sandy fields so normally drain well but it was a slimy mess. Lovely to get out though.

I'm sorry for the delays, Dandy. In my experience if you're in the UK, it's rarely a backlog at the crematorium. Dignity took over a lot of family undertakers in the last 20 years. They consolidated funeral cars and hearses, so often mourners are fobbed off with delays because they haven't got the cars. Our local FD has no cars parked by his premises but the independent FD did.

I called the crematorium directly when my brother died.to check their waiting times and was told they had space a week earlier than I was being quoted. The FD moved pretty sharpish after that, though we did use an independent FD associated with SAIF, not Dignity. All crematoria list their funerals outside the building every day and you can see if the slots are full. They usually hold 6/7 ceremonies a day.

Jewish and Muslim people are supposed to be interred within 24 hours of death, so they can move quickly when they need to.

sproutsandparsnips · 27/01/2025 21:15

Sorry about all the illnesses hope all get better soon. DH has a mild cold and I am trying to avoid it as I can't abide not being able to breathe through my nose!
Love the snowy pics @MissConductUS - as others have said, it's just wet and windy here.
As @ShoesOnFirstThenCar says, yes I live in Wales but I'm actually English. Lived here since I came to university here. DH and DSs Welsh but not first language Welsh speakers. DSs do Welsh at GCSE, as did DH. I have learnt a little - I work in a trust with a large number of Welsh speakers. At school however I learnt Italian and French and I'm still much better at speaking them than Welsh!
DS had interview in Cardiff last week, and Birmingham next, then it's a waiting game.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 27/01/2025 21:47

ouf @DandyDandylion , not ideal having to wait for a funeral :s

Didn't realise that big business had moved into the funeral area so comprehensively.

@sproutsandparsnips when I was young there were relatively few native Welsh speakers left. Wonder if that's increasing now it's taught in schools? Every so often an English owned holiday home used to get torched, back then.

sproutsandparsnips · 27/01/2025 22:03

@DucklingSwimmingInstructress I think it is - it's strange, where I live it's not widely spoken, but where I work - a county further west, it's far more widely spoken, and another county north and west it is very widely spoken! Both are within the same health board.

MissConductUS · 29/01/2025 15:17

We had a bit of progress yesterday on the kitchen. The fridge and microwave were moved back in (hooray!) and the decorative panels for the back and end of the peninsula were delivered and installed by the carpenter. I think they look much nicer than the plain panel we had before. The painter has made good progress painting the hallway and is back today to keep going.

Before the carpenter finishes, we're going to have him measure all of the windows in the house so that the contractor can work up a price for replacing them in the spring. I think it's going to be very expensive. I saw a thread here on MN yesterday about the cost of having new windows fitted, so I'm glad that it's not just American windows that are expensive.

Big change from two weeks ago, @MissConductUS !

DandyDandylion · 29/01/2025 15:34

The kitchen is coming on nicely MissC it must be a relief to see it taking shape after all the disruption. We replaced all windows and doors when we moved in here. We didn’t do them all at once though so goodness knows what the total cost was. Our house was definitely “in need of” and to begin with I was adding up the cost of everything. By the end I was singing la la la with my fingers in my ears. There are still things we want to do like replacing the drive and patio but now we also need to repaint upstairs. I know if you live somewhere a long time things do need redoing but do also have an odd feeling of having already done that once.
I am resting up as have an odd stingy pain in the stomach. Doctor says my small intestine is inflamed but will hopefully settle on its own.

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 29/01/2025 20:05

Kitchen is looking lovely Miss , I’m really impressed with the speed it’s being done at!
Hope you feel better soon Dandy

I live in a county further west from you I think sprouts and there is quite a lot of Welsh spoken here. We enrolled DD in the Welsh school before it became obvious that it was really not the right option for a non verbal child.
I have been to my yoga class today and my legs are really cross! The teacher did commend me tho for giving it all a go to the best of my ability (and balance!) and apparently doing it quite well, so I was happy with that. Yay me!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/01/2025 20:09

Yea, Shoes!

Contractor found some issues after removing counter top. Doing some extra repair and prep before he can pop new one on.

MissConductUS · 29/01/2025 20:16

Thanks all for the nice comments about the kitchen. I know that it is actually going quite quickly, but two weeks feels like forever. The builder's blokes have been working very diligently.

Dandy, a short course of prednisone will fix that right up if your doctor is willing to rx it. Do you have any idea what brought it on in the first place?

Havoc, damage from leaking water is always more extensive than you think at first.

It reached 50F (10C) today, which feels like a heat wave. The snow is melting.

Ooh Miss if you’re in the UK and a certain age you would say “scorchio” to the warmer weather, even if sarcastically. From a sketch show called ‘The Fast Show’ which spawned many catchphrases, well it did for my generation anyway 😁

MissConductUS · 29/01/2025 21:21

Shoes, I googled scorchio and found the Fast Show on youtube. It looks like a hoot, and a bit of a take off on an American show called Saturday Night Live, which ran in the same era. SNL is still on now, but it's not as funny as it used to be.

sproutsandparsnips · 29/01/2025 21:22

@ShoesOnFirstThenCar I think I know which county 😉! I worked in the biggest hospital in the west for a while and often English was only spoken in meetings for my benefit, otherwise it was all Welsh. Now I work in same county but not as much Welsh spoken, though still a fair bit.
Miss, it's all coming on apace, how exciting!

IWanderedLonely · 29/01/2025 21:58

Miss kitchen's looking gorgeous, I do like that colour.
Feeling overwhelmed this evening as have had 2 youngest grandchildren all day. DH came home and moaned about his shit day at work, but I pointed out that at least he got to sit down to eat his dinner and he could go for a wee by himself!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/01/2025 01:58

Kitchen counter done in time to start dinner. 🤗
