Smelly friend advice please

I met this friend about 2 years ago. I love spending time together and we can chat away about everything and anything for hours on end . Quite often she can be smelly though . She has IBS and needs the loo a lot. She showers every day but doesn’t change her trousers or leggings for days and sometimes when she has gone home, the seat where she’s sat is really smelly and I need to clean it. She has close friends who she has known for many years, so they would be in a far better position to have mentioned it if they’d had a problem with it. Can any one think of anything I can do ( either practically to protect the sofa ) or tactfully handle this ? She is such a lovely person, I’d hate to upset or embarrass her but sometimes it’s really noticeable.

The conclusion seems to be it’s not something there is a tactful way to bring up, so furniture protection it is. We live next door but one . We do go out but because we live so close it’s easy to go to each others homes. Especially in bad weather when it’s nice to not have to walk, get the bus or de-ice car.

Is she married?

GucciBear · 24/11/2024 05:46

ThreeDoorsDown I had not heard of this tip before. Thank you.

Bringithere · 24/11/2024 05:48

Artistbythewater, no she’s not married and doesn’t have a partner.

those Wype products look really good. On the pricey side though. I was just about to do my Christmas shopping .

I don’t live with my partner but they’d tell me if I was whiffy, as I would him. Friend has lots of other really good friends who they’ve known for years and years . I’m guessing they are either nose blind too or also can’t broach the subject either.

There was a long thread not so long ago about people not washing their botty in the shower.

I reckon it's this.

Maybe leave the thread open on your laptop when she visits 🙂

Btw I have ibs and do not leave smelly bot odour on chairs.

How unlike the home life of our dear late Queen.

Blueblell · 24/11/2024 05:59

I wouldn’t say anything to her. She is a friend you like and enjoy her company, I would mitigate the smell she leaves behind with the throw ect and fabreeze after she has left.

A throw is a great idea. I'd be tempted to put one of those large protective pads under the throw as well. I do feel a bit sorry for her, she'd be mortified if she knew. That said, I can't imagine why she can't smell it herself.

Yes to this. If your cushions unzip and are washable you could keep a puppy pad between the cover and wadding so the cover could be washed but protects the cushion.

I second this pet odour elimination spray. My dog shat all over the carpet in my bedroom the other day and the spray got the smell out. It also works on hard floors in case you need to get the smell out of other furniture.

I would plan to get something non fabric down the track.

ExitPursuedByAGummyBear · 24/11/2024 06:15

Does she have one of those handheld portable bidet? She might not realise if she developed nose blindness or she might have silent but deadly farts and it’s secreting onto her clothes. Regular showers would help, but she’ll need to use soap/shower gel or something as well as washing her clothes. I think a gentle discussion is in order because it won’t get any better.

Edited

I forgot to add in my previous post, if doesn’t have one of those washable bidets, you can either buy one for her as a gift or buy a washable throw on the seating area when your friend visits. You can say that you’re concerned so that she doesn’t feel criticised as it’s a sensitive subject.

Next time she's there, I'd act innocent and ask with an air of mystification if she can smell shit. You could always say that your friend/sister visited with their pup and you're worried it crapped somewhere! Pretend to look for said crap and leave the question hanging when you can't find it.
Sorry, but she needs to know.

This. If she really is noseblind and is good friend then there must be some way to bring it up. Its just awful for her otherwise..

HomeTheatreSystem · 24/11/2024 06:59

When you go round to hers do you notice the odour then?

Mrsredlipstick · 24/11/2024 07:16

Personally I'd tell her. She needs to be wearing incontinence pants. My late father did and he had some sort of allowance for extra laundry. Everything went into the machine on its own daily.
I'd say 'lovely you are my dear friend but you are a bit whiffy. You can hate me if you like but it needs sorting'. Buy her some pants.

And just as an add. My friend told me I was going nutty and needed therapy (I did) and quite a few years ago I was an alcoholic. Both no longer the case thank God.

Bringithere · 24/11/2024 07:24

Mrsredlipstick. I’d really want to know and while I’d not like to hear something like that, I would trust if it came from a good friend, and act on it. I wish I had the bottle to tell her .

I went out with someone like this although they didn't have any health conditions & did shower daily. I hated them sitting on the sofa in just their dressing gown.

I did mention it but nothing changed - maybe it's like some people have a different mouth smell to others.

Bringithere · 24/11/2024 07:26

HomeTheatreSystem yes I notice it in her home and from her clothes too sometimes

What does arse smell like 🙈

How I wish I needed to ask this 🤣

DrunkTinkerbell40s · 24/11/2024 07:34

This thread has really opened my eyes and now I'm terrified I smell!! I bet she doesn't know she smells :( I'm scared I do with no idea!!

Pottedshrimpy · 24/11/2024 07:36

This is her not wearing clean clothes daily! This is a choice not IBS I’d say. Gross.

BadPeopleFan · 24/11/2024 07:37

If you are going to get a throw get one for both sofas or it will be blinding obvious what you are up to.
