If you used to buy the Now albums what number was your first one?

33 for me, brought on double cassette from good old Woolies.

I know they are viewed by many as being deeply uncool but individual albums were way too expensive for me as a pre-teen. I think they featured on all my teen Xmas lists too and I remember the adverts with Mark Goodier doing the voice over.

I still have a very soft spot for them, even though when I occasionally pick one up for a nosy at I have no idea who 99% of the tracklists are, but I don't think I'm their target audience anymore anyway!

@Sethera Awww, that photo of the front of the first NOW album (on your post at 23.04) brings back SO many happy memories of being a teenager, and the carefree life I had then. Lovely........Smile

I’ve recently found my notebooks I’ve written my Christmas shopping lists in. First one I bought was now 27 in 1994 for my eldest son and then they regularly appeared on my lists for the next 10 years.

3

The original on vinyl IIRC.

Yep, I've still got it. I like to say it hasn't got a number (it hasn't) because it was the first one and they hadn't decided there would be more!

I've never bought another one ever though.

Six!
Think it had 'China in your hands' on it.

Maybe the Thomson Twins!

I'm old. 😮

Now 20 on cassette. My parents also had Now 10 on vinyl which I used to borrow a lot.

NeedWineNow · 23/11/2024 23:24

The very first one on vinyl!

I got the first one on cassette and the snobby girl next to me said that pop music was for plebs and none of them could beat Beethoven. Obviously she was wrong because 1983-4 was the start of the best musical period of all time. Practically the whole Top 40 beginning then are now classics.

I heard recently that as long as the first 12-15 tracks and the last 3 were great, the albums would sell.

Edited

I mean Beethoven did compose some banging tunes but you can't sing along to him like you can a Now album.

Strokethefurrywall · 23/11/2024 23:27

Now 23 I think - first song I remember is Sleeping Satellites by Tamsin Archer. Quality album!

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 23/11/2024 23:34

@BaldingClare I loved a compilation album, I remember Hits 95/6/7 used to be great too and often have songs that the Now ones didn't feature.

like everything, people wanted instant gratification. This is so true. Randomly I can still remember that the Now albums came out every year around March/April, July and November and the thrill when you heard the advert and snippets of songs that were on it. This would seem archaic to kids today but I really remember the joy and excitement after the wait and anticipation.

Those piano concerto's have got a hell of a beat to them though.

Now 17 was my first, on cassette. Then 18 on vinyl for my little white cassette and record player. I thought I was the coolest ever!

If anyone's interested in the Now albums this is a good podcast with a different Now being discussed in each episode.

Number 3 on tape 😱 makes me feel well old 😩 (not the only thing mind !)

Sethera · 23/11/2024 23:48

Kids today will never understand the joy of compilation albums and that really makes me sad.

Yes - all those singles you couldn't afford to buy were yours forever even though they were destined to disappear from the radio, (proper versions not what you'd taped off the Top 40 with David Kid Jenson talking over the end!)

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 23/11/2024 23:49

@BaldingClare I think we may have had the same childhood! And actually you were lucky, whilst most of us had boring interchangeable copies of Now whatever yours was completely unique!^^

You just had to have lightning speed reactions to press the stop button before he uttered a word. It took hours of practice but it was doable.
