Are they up?
When did they go up?
If their not up when are you doing them?

Going up 7th December. If we had it my DHs way, it would be 23rd Dec. I would like things up 1st December, so we compromised.

What does full swing into Christmas mean for you though? For many of us being in the swing of it means that makes it the perfect time to actually be getting the house ready for Christmas. It's precisely because prior to that isn't Christmas that I don't want to be doing decorations then.

Which is why I'll always find it weird people take the decorations down when it's still Christmas because they've decided Christmas is a time period different to what it actually us.

Full swing of Christmas means already celebrating mini Christmases going to friend's, family, and the pub. Swapping gifts, parties etc. Putting Christmas decorations up to me is part of the prep like wrapping presents, writing Christmas cards, shopping.

Never said this out loud before, but I judge people who put their decorations up really early. They are like impatient toddlers who can’t wait. They’re bored of Christmas by the time it comes and are desperate to tidy up and put it all away on Boxing Day. They are surprised that the rest of us are in peak Christmas season between Christmas day and 6th January which is when you’re actually supposed to be celebrating and have your decorations up.

I like my decorations up Early ish around the 1st of December but I don't take them down until after new year as I'm still celebrating at that point but after new years day I'm done. Everything tidied away, house deep cleaned then time to start a diet and detox from the alcohol of the last 2 weeks

We have DH's birthday on 23 Dec, so we go out for drinks during the day (collecting our cheese order at the same time) after collecting our Booths order first thing.

On 24 Dec I do any last minute baking which is needed. I have no time or desire on either of those days to put up 2 Christmas trees! I don't care if others want to. It's their choice!

I love sitting in the light of the tree, so having it up for a long while suits me just fine. 🤷‍♀️

Everyone who's exhibiting pearl-clutching intolerance really needs to get a grip, frankly. It's fine to put your tree up / take it down whenever you want. What others do isn't any of your business / concern. And certainly not something requiring judgment!

Our peak holiday season is from 6 December (Sinterklass celebrations) to 25 December. Then Christmas is over and we look forward to the New Year party. There is no right or wrong - everyone can have their own special traditions and celebrations.

Same!

It is anyone's perogative to put up or take down their decorations early if they want to (before 6 Jan being early) and it will always remain my perogative to judge them.

It's always the early put-uppers and take-downers who get all defensive and outraged they are being judged. And those of us doing it right quite cheerfully amused by it. Never sure why so defensive if you're genuinely happy with it.

And yes I'm being a bit tongue in cheek about "doing it right" but not entirely. I am right 😀

I'm normally back to work by the 6th. So our celebrations very much end on NYE

That's different as it's following an actual different tradition. As opposed to picking and choosing one's own dates for an existing festival.

We're usually back at work on 2nd! Christmas ends on twelfth night, because that's when it ends.

Mudslideal · 17/11/2024 18:40

Mine are going up next weekend, only as we are going on a Caribbean cruise and won't be back till the 13th, normally they go up the first weekend in Dec x

Families create their own special traditions over the years and these become a part of their Christmas celebrations. Each families way of celebrating is special to them so their way is their right way.

Or maybe someone in the family has received a terminal diagnosis or are suffering with severe depression, or seeing someone that they might not see for another few years.

You're not 'actually supposed to be doing anything' other than exactly what you want to do in your own home with your own possessions and your own family and friends.

Judge away, I'm sure no one gives a stuff, I certainly don't.

Christmas ends when people want it to end. Many of us don’t believe in advent or the 12 days

Minihero · 17/11/2024 18:44

Next weekend probably, if not the weekend after.

I always find these threads funny when people seem genuinely offended by when other people they don't know put their decorations up or take them down "too early" GrinGrinGrin

AnnaDelvorkina · 17/11/2024 18:45

I’d quite like to buy ours on Friday, 22nd Nov. and the DCs decorate it. Usually we buy it from the supermarket’s garden section using the points we’ve accrued during the year (as Christmas is so expensive) so I hope they have them in stock by then. The DCs are away for a school trip the first week of Déc. and are participating in sports events the weekend of 13th Déc. so if we get a tree on 22nd Nov. then we’ll all be able to enjoy it more (I love having a Christmas tree and think DH and DC do too). Usually the trees we buy last really well.

And that's your prerogative but as the granddaughter of a Russian and the daughter of German who has been respectful of other traditions, we follow the UK Christian tradition and I find it a shame that whilst I am expected to respect all other traditions, this one is afforded little mutual respect or understanding.

We put ours up yesterday , I love it! They won't be coming down until the 7th Jan! Ho ho ho 😁 🎄

Its crazy isn't it. I don't give a hoot.

My youngest still has a star curtain of lights in his bedroom window. He wanted to keep them from last year and he uses them as a night light. Technically not Christmas but I'm sure some mnetters would be seething!

No one is being disrespectful by taking down their Christmas decorations on a different day to you! We’re not all Christians.

I will put them up when I or people in my family feel like it. Sometime in December. I do like to put most of it away on Boxing Day as I want the space the tree takes up. Also it feels stale having it all up after Christmas Day and I want to move on. This is due to Christmas causing me work/mental load.
