When did they go up?
If their not up when are you doing them?

Choosing, carrying tree home, sawing trunk, basically creating a whole fuss about the tree is part of our household enjoyment of the festive season.

Real trees last 3 weeks, so around 16th Dec until 5th January 12th night.

Iv never had a real tree but going to chop a tree down sounds great like something from a movie

We were going to get a real tree this year to go in my newly decorated living room. But we had a kitten in October. So maybe next year!

Loafbeginsat60 · 17/11/2024 20:09

No tree yet. But winter village and other birds are out. Lots of fairy lights

It's a bit snowy here tonight too!!

Dd was off school all week and bored senseless so she decorated. We don't usually until around 10/12

We add our wreath to the door on 1st Sunday of Advent (1/12 this year) and then the tree the weekend after. Down after new year, as near to Epiphany as possible dependent on going back to school/work.

I agree with the lady above about it being sad when trees go up so early and then down asap after Christmas Day. Christmas decorations are for advent and the 12 day period that starts on Christmas Day.

A woman local to us has taken it a step further by doing a Halloween Christmas tree! WTF!

This is only your opinion and way of doing things - it’s not fact or wrong if someone does things differently.

We used to put them up Christmas Eve, as did my parents. One year for some special themed occasion they went up on the 10th, but the tree wasn't surviving well, despite watering. So now it's a few days before (practical reasons and Winter Solstice) but they're taken down by Twelfth Night.

We do have winter decorations, but they're not mistaken for Christmas decorations, and are nature based; things like King Winter and in spring Mrs Thaw is added.

@Parker231 your reply made me giggle. You’ll be telling me next Christmas has nothing to do with the birth of Jesus! 🤣

Put your tree up when you want, but at least respect that origins of Christmas are religious and its ‘fact’ that traditionally Christmas is 12 days starting from 25 Dec in UK.

For our family Christmas has nothing to do with Jesus. It’s a time for our family traditions - all being together, a Pj Christmas Day competition, too much good food and drink, lots of presents and the house decorated. For our family Christmas has nothing to do with religion.

If others want a different type of celebration, good for them but it doesn’t mean that’s theirs is right and ours wrong.

Our Christmas doesn't. Nothing remotely religious involved in it at all.

I was born and raised Catholic. Not for my kids thanks.

DilemmaDelilah · 18/11/2024 06:46

Not up yet.
Wreath will go on the door December 1st and we may buy the tree that weekend.
Tree up and living room decorations any time after December 1st.
Decorate dining room Saturday 21st, ready for family to arrive.

Christmas is nothing to do with Jesus in this house. Technically it's actually a Pagan festival which Christianity conveniently co-opted. But humans have always celebrated with feasts and lights in mid-winter.

Thecomfortador · 18/11/2024 06:59

Our tree will be 1st December as the round table are delivering on the 30th. Then I've got some 80s style foil stars / streamers to hang probably once the schools are finished to ramp up the excitement a bit. Our living room lights have stayed up since last Christmas and have been on most days.

Not really any movie you would want to watch!
But H has a desk job, and the kids, now teens, I think it makes them all feel a bit lumberjack butch so that's what we do. You would think they would get better at it, but it's a whole heap of bickering and laughing at ineptitude before tree is finally installed!

Tree is 95% of our decorations and after 10 days or so, even if you keep on top of rhe watering, if you brush past it thousands of needles fall off.

Hence not installing until 16th ish give or take a couple of days either side.

Once tree is installed the tree topping, presently a star because we destroyed the fairy, becomes a nerf bullet target!

It was an entertaining conversation asking a christmas shop assistant if they had a tree topper that could be shot off with a direct nerf bullet hit, a lot are designed to stay put I've discovered.

That's different as it's following an actual different tradition. As opposed to picking and choosing one's own dates for an existing festival.

I don’t actually think Christmas does have defined dates in the way you’re suggesting, beyond the day itself. The traditional period was Christmas Day until Twelfth Night, but very few people adhere to that any more (and who can blame them - it’s hard to maintain a spirit of festive cheer a full week into January when most are back at work on the first or second).

These days it’s far more common for the first three weeks of December to form the Christmas period, culminating on the day itself and then perhaps 2 or 3 days after. The majority of activities and events are scheduled in the run up.

My personal preference is to get decorations up the first or second week of December and then, if the tree lasts, keep it until the first two or three days of January. I don’t really like it up beyond returning to work, because it has usually dropped and is a depressing relic.

I certainly don’t judge anyone as inferior if they view the Christmas period differently to me, and I don’t consider anyone morally superior for putting their decorations up later. There are no firm rules, it truly is a matter of personal preference and the schedule of each person. It’s so not worth being snotty and judgmental about!

Done mine today and feel I can get enthusiam to start wrapping.

WomanFromTheNorth · 19/11/2024 07:58

Up first weekend in December. Usually, down on the 6th Jan after the 3 Wise Men have been 😁

Clarentine · 19/11/2024 08:53

Mine are going up on the 14th this year, and down on the 5th Jan. I'm all for slow living - I don't like being suddenly jolted out of Christmas on Boxing Day, and rushed from one occasion to the next. I like to enjoy it peacefully for the 12 days, plus I find it sad and sentimental taking them down. December until the 25th is too stressful and frenetic. I much prefer the bit of Christmas from Boxing Day onwards.
