Light hearted, is there something you never got for Christmas as a kid and still feel slightly whistful about?

I was talking to a friend earlier who got a Mr Frosty last Christmas, albeit a few decades after she first asked for him.

It reminded me that there was one thing I really wanted and never got, which was the early 90s Sylvanian Families manor house. Even though I understood that my parents/Santa wouldn't be able to afford it, I still headed my Christmas list with it for a couple of years just in case someone donated it to one of the jumble sales that my mum used to go to.

Haven't thought about it for years but finding the picture still generated a little pang of longing!

Anyone else got any?

I wanted a 'simon' in the 80s.
I was delighted when my DDs were given one in the 2010s.

I'm still bitter about not receiving the following for Christmas and I'm knocking on 40. I've ranked them in priority order:

  1. Sindy's makeup counter
  2. California Roller Baby
  3. Dreamphone
  4. A doll whose hair would turn rainbow colour if you used a brush with ice in it? I can't remember the name but if anyone can please let me know!

Kermit the Frog cuddly toy. Wanted one so bad in the 1970's!

Speak n Spell...I was obsessed with it after seeing ET... I got Speak n Write 😭not the same at all.

I agree. I had speak n spell and an unfortunate sibling got Speak and Read which was not the same thing at all - not least because speak n spell was red and the other was a naff yellow. Just be pleased you dodged the horror of the grey Speak n Math that I was given the following year because speak n spell had been such a success. “ S and M” sat and glowered at me from the corner of my room and it would make an excellent villain toy in a Toy Story Sequel, shouting out division questions.

I was not allowed Hungry Hippos or mr Frosty because it was “ plasticky junk,” and I desperately coveted the really long Lots a legs caterpillar. I had a nice modest sized pink one but wanted that ridiculously long ( 3 metres?) one they showed on the ads in green. Can’t think why my mum didn’t oblige …

What's a Simon?

Scalextric - because I was/am female. I would still really like one

What's a Simon?

Circular with 4 panels that light up and make sounds. Like 'Simon Says' game where the choldren have to follow instructions. it flashes something. You press it then it builds the sequence and you remember and repeat it, and you try to go on as long as possible. A memory test.

You can still get them. A round electronic game with colour panels that light up. You have to repeat the sequence.

Oh and screw ball scramble! Think it was about wanting to take the cool toy in at the end of term like we did back then 🤣

Oh god the amount of side-eyeing that went on over what other people had brought in and the pressure to take something that wasn't so obvious that everyone else would bring the same thing but different enough that they'd all want to have a go. Kids today don't know how easy they have it.

ABBA The Album- I got a Bony M album instead…

A Donny Osmond mug- I got a David Cassidy one instead.

My mum was rubbish at getting the stuff that you actually wanted 😂.

Yes it’s still a good game. The new one isn’t as satisfying to thump the panels though! Feels a bit flimsier- or maybe I’m just bigger!

Mr frosty

Everything else I ever put on my list I got. Always. No matter what it was. Sylvanians or ' get set' things like chocolate coin maker.
But never a Mr frosty 😢

they were legendary - and my older cousins had Basil Brush too. One of them at some point vomited on him.

Mr Frosty here too! My mum thought it was a waste of money :(

As a nicer aside, we had a toy shop nearby and I would go in after school to look at the soft toys, which I particularly liked when I was probably about 7 or 8. I was especially fond of a dog teddy they had out at one time which I had given a name etc. One day, I went in as usual to see it and remember breaking my heart because he had gone and thinking that someone else had bought him. I realise as an adult that the woman who worked there must have put it aside and given my parents the nudge and he was under my tree Christmas morning but it felt like real Christmas magic!

A Barbie. I got a Sindy instead, which was ok but ungrateful brat that I was, I felt underwhelmed.

I was only allowed Sindy. Lots of mums thought she was “ more wholesome.” She probably was: marginally thicker waist and legs, smaller boobs and less platinum blonde. I had the brunette one too.

Christmas as it should be!

Furrydogmum · 16/11/2024 19:46

Mr Frosty was awful!! I'm still waiting for a pure black stallion, not convinced I'll get one now, and it probably needs to be a cart horse these days 🤷‍♀️

Light up trainers!

A chimpanzee like the tetley tea advert, my dad said we already had a house full of monkeys, 4 kids 😂

The one on the piano? Did it slide down the stairs…?

cookiebee · 16/11/2024 19:51

I desperately wanted a cabbage patch doll, but wasn’t allowed one because I was a boy, though in my late twenties when eBay took off and I still drank alcohol, I ended up with a cupboard full of the things 😂

On the bright side, I did get a ‘Mr Chimney Pot’, he was made by the same company who made the big yellow teapot, same concept. I used to run up to the toy shop window each day on the way back from one of my mums cleaning jobs, my dad didn’t want me to have it because it was essentially a dolls house, but my mum took pity on me that year, result!
