Light hearted, is there something you never got for Christmas as a kid and still feel slightly whistful about?

I was talking to a friend earlier who got a Mr Frosty last Christmas, albeit a few decades after she first asked for him.

It reminded me that there was one thing I really wanted and never got, which was the early 90s Sylvanian Families manor house. Even though I understood that my parents/Santa wouldn't be able to afford it, I still headed my Christmas list with it for a couple of years just in case someone donated it to one of the jumble sales that my mum used to go to.

Haven't thought about it for years but finding the picture still generated a little pang of longing!

Anyone else got any?

A chemistry set, I've just Googled it and it bought back all the pangs of longing that I had.

Yeah the strength of longing surprised me still after all these years.

I desperately wanted a Cadbury's Dairy Milk dispenser. You put a coin in it and it dispensed tiny bars of chocolate. My Mum refused to get it on the grounds that she could get me dozens of proper sized bars of chocolate for less money. She was right of course, but still...

Still dream of this. Wonder if it actually cooked anything.

My mum used to say it'll never turn out as nice as it looks on the box. Now I'm older and more cynical I think she was probably right.

I saw the title and raced on to say Mr Frosty ice maker but obviously I am not alone in my bitter lifelong disappointment.

I've never forgiven Father Christmas, the tight arsed git!

Ooh we had those, late 60s when I was very small. They were so great, the teeny tiny bars perfectly wrapped.

Hulahoopalaver · 16/11/2024 17:20

😂😂 He has a lot to answer for. So many crushed childhood wishes

Similar to yours OP - the playmobil Victorian mansion. It still seems to be available but even more expensive!

Think we might have had the same parents!

One of those little Cadbury's chocolate dispensers that you put 1p in. When birthday/Christmas came around, there was always something I wanted more

In mourning for Mr Frosty and Operation😂

We had Operation. I want a Mr Frosty and one of those Cadbury's dispenser thingies.

You didn't miss much. Either that or mine was just very high maintenance.

I wanted a Mr Frosty too. DD saw one in a shop a year or so ago and said she wanted it. The words 'no, it's utter tat, it'll just be rubbish and won't work properly' came out of my mouth before I even registered what I was saying. I stood there wondering when I turned into DM, while a woman nearby snorted at me an tried to avoid eye contact. Grin

Strangely reversed - I DID get Tracy Island - and it was amazing. DPs were utterly perplexed that DB and I wanted to make the Blue Peter version anyway! 😂

Oh gosh this brings back childhood memories.... there were quite a few things but the Rainbow Brite doll stands out as I had to go to my friends house to play with them. (She had a formidable selection!)

AquaLibra · 16/11/2024 17:27

There used to always be this mermaid hair salon toy in the Argos catalogue which I put on my list for years and never got!

All those yoghurt pots! Have to admit I refused to even attempt it as I knew it could never be as good as Anthea Turner's version.

Omg! I had that chemistry set. It was the 90s, someone gave it to me second hand, unused.

It was great, sorry.

I really wanted a Girls World.

I don't think I even bothered telling my mum this...

I'd never heard of Mr Frosty before I got on Mumsnet. Am I too old, or just TV-deprived?

I had Girls World and I did love it.
However, the hairstyles were basically impossible. The hair just wouldn’t hold the style and it just tended to be the same all the time.

The face was obviously not malleable so it was difficult to do the eye make up. It never really looked like the pictures in the style book.

Having said that, I did play with it for hours on end and I really loved it.

edited for typo.

I never wanted a Mr Frosty but I did want a cabbage patch doll, however my mum thought they were ugly and wouldn’t get me one.
