Light hearted, is there something you never got for Christmas as a kid and still feel slightly whistful about?

I was talking to a friend earlier who got a Mr Frosty last Christmas, albeit a few decades after she first asked for him.

It reminded me that there was one thing I really wanted and never got, which was the early 90s Sylvanian Families manor house. Even though I understood that my parents/Santa wouldn't be able to afford it, I still headed my Christmas list with it for a couple of years just in case someone donated it to one of the jumble sales that my mum used to go to.

Haven't thought about it for years but finding the picture still generated a little pang of longing!

Anyone else got any?

I dreamed of having a baby doll that cried and made noises, it may have moved too. It was in the early 90s and just too expensive.

Missing out on that doll is probably the real reason why I went on to have five children....😂

Mr Frosty
Soda Stream
Mousetrap (deceptively exciting advert)

WillimNot · 16/11/2024 18:15

I wanted an A la Carte Kitchen. Never got one
I always say this is why I didn't learn to cook until I was 27

A horse. Might see whether my parents will buy me one this Christmas instead or if they're as tight as ever.

I wanted a Cabbage Patch doll, even though I was technically far too old when they came out. I just thought they were cute. Still do, sort of. Never got one.

Oh @Hulahoopalaver I longed for this SF house when I was little. My parents said it was just to expensive, I accepted it and happily (with some jealousy, lived my best life through my friends one). Then, oh happy days the parents announced it was time for the Christmas list (made from the Argos catalogue.

Nope, still too expensive. Enter my master bargaining skills. Big pupp dog eyes to father and off we trotted to the local toy shop. No Notwitty, it's a £100 far too expensive. Sooo...dearest daddy if I were to have the country manoir, village shop and nursery that's three for the same price.

Result ☺️

I think we had the same childhood right down to the Argos catalogue and hopefully doe eyes at dad! The funny think is I did get a lot of the other slightly cheaper sets, including the narrow boat an OP mentioned but that bloody mansion was the best all and end all to me.

I think I was quite young when I also asked for a horse and my parents brought me a stuffed cuddly toy one. Oh how I laughed over their "mistake" and spent the next few Christmases specifying my wish to the letter.

Mr Frosty, Wuzzle Teddy, and my pet monster.

RabbitsRock · 16/11/2024 18:29

I always longed for a Paddington Bear. Bought one as an adult but not the same thrill as it would have been to see one on Christmas morning as a child. I can still picture my friend Miranda’s with the beautifully shiny wellies & little suitcase. Envied her so much!

It was circa 1966, I would have been about nine years old and Dr Who was all the rage. My mum had taken me to see Father Christmas in Lewis's Department store in Bristol. Lewis's had nothing to do with John Lewis. It was a very upmarket independent store with lift operators who wore uniforms and gloves. Santa's grotto was located on the toys and games floor and as we exited the lift we were greeted by 4ft high robot Daleks. They were made of metal, some were blue, some gold and some red and as they trundled around they exclaimed "exterminate, exterminate!" I had never wanted anything more in my entire life. I begged my mum for one but they were fifty guineas which equates to around £3,000 now. My Dad only earned about £25 a week. I still think about those bloody Daleks. I wonder how much one would be worth now.

Oh @Hulahoopalaver this has made me smile thinking about SF. My daughter isn't quite 3, perhaps she needs the mansion.

I wanted a pony, parents thought it was hilarious to get me the SF pony with a showjump.

So since I didn't have an actual pony but a Guinea pig, I made a 'run' of some sorts and sent the fat furry over it. Poor thing just waddled through it really.

Many years later, got the pony and spent 20 years skint, muddy, hairy (mostly from the for legged giant baby) and occasionally in A&E from stupid 'dismounts'.

And currently on the phone to Ma and reminiscing about the Christmas list - Argos - list by page, item number and a description. 3 options of 'main present' and few other 'little' ideas.

Oh to be back in the 1990's 😋

😂This really made me howl.
And I think your DD definitely needs the mansion, she certainly wouldn't be short of best friends 😊.

I never got a Mr frostie.

notwittywithusernames · 16/11/2024 18:56

@Hulahoopalaver she really does. I'll keep it safe in my bedroom until she can play with it correctly 🤣

VegTrug · 16/11/2024 19:03

Anything! I never got any of the things I asked Santa for. My older brother always did though

bookmarket · 16/11/2024 19:08

The playdough barbershop.

I'm reminded of it anytime I use a potato ricer!

Mine was an A La Carte kitchen too!

Ha that's it a la carte kitchen! Another one for mr frosty here. I always got a different version so I really wanted a fashion wheel but I got fashion plates same thing I guess but just not quite the same!

pambeesleyhalpert · 16/11/2024 19:11

onwardsup4 · 16/11/2024 19:11

Oh and screw ball scramble! Think it was about wanting to take the cool toy in at the end of term like we did back then 🤣

A Barbie. I got a Sindy instead. Sindy was like a beige, wholesome, less interesting version of Barbie who could have kicked her arse blindfolded.

My mum actually said yesterday that she was going to get my daughter a Sindy rather than a Barbie and I was not impressed... and told her as much

Vettrianofan · 16/11/2024 19:15

A dolls house. Still annoyed.

onwardsup4 · 16/11/2024 19:15

It's garbage pail not cabbage ! 😂

Countmeout · 16/11/2024 19:22

Illya Kuryakin - I got Napoleon Solo.

consequently my children had the a la carte kitchen and the fisher price kitchen ( but one still resents not having Mr Frosty.)
