Light hearted, is there something you never got for Christmas as a kid and still feel slightly whistful about?

I was talking to a friend earlier who got a Mr Frosty last Christmas, albeit a few decades after she first asked for him.

It reminded me that there was one thing I really wanted and never got, which was the early 90s Sylvanian Families manor house. Even though I understood that my parents/Santa wouldn't be able to afford it, I still headed my Christmas list with it for a couple of years just in case someone donated it to one of the jumble sales that my mum used to go to.

Haven't thought about it for years but finding the picture still generated a little pang of longing!

Anyone else got any?

My husbands was an electric guitar and mousetrap 😂

My cousin had mousetrap but it was dreadful and so complicated. Don't think we ever finished a game of it, just got board and grew up.

My cousin had a Mr Frosty so knew as a child that they didn't live up to the expectation.

I really wanted one of those play do barber sets.

I found the retro advert on YouTube and I still think I would play with it now and I'm 50!

Post office and my little pony

I loved my post office. I think I constantly hounded my family to write letters so I could process them.

I wanted a microscope when I was 10. It could have been a toy that just did 10x and I would have been happy. I wanted one so badly and I was convinced one package under the tree was just the right size. It was clothes.

when dd asked for a microscope one year, you better believe she got the works. Small, but good optics, prepared slides and blanks to fill herself.

Ponderingwindow · 16/11/2024 17:37

Some of the kids I babysat for had Mousetrap. I hated when they wanted to play it. We never managed to finish a game. It always just devolved into them getting bored and playing with the pieces.

As this is light hearted I will tell of a disappointment; I usually feel a bit mean about having felt that way but I was only small, maybe 5 or 6.

I really wanted a small train set and went on and on about it for ages so both parents knew.

On my birthday morning I woke to find my mum sitting next to my bed, smiling, holding a big doll with dark hair and winding something up on the doll's stomach. It started talking, "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep....etc", in a scratchy child's voice. My mum was so pleased with this doll that she had chosen for me and I just did not care for dolls, or the doll's pram and dolls' house I already had or anything like that. It also showed that she hadn't listened to a word i'd said.

Bah!

Mine was an A La Carte kitchen too!

This! Wanted it so much. I can still remember the TV advert clearly.

How lovely. I hope your DD let you have a go with it 😊

A Bicycle.

We were five girls and a boy. The boy was bought a bike, none of us girls were. Just as dbruv was encouraged to do sports, to have friends over, to go to university. We were not.

Pure misogyny on the part of father. Not forgotten or forgiven.

Tiny Tears doll and a Barbie doll 😭

haveyouopenedyourbowelstoday · 16/11/2024 17:41

A brother or sister.

WearyAuldWumman · 16/11/2024 17:42

Spirograph.

Mum got me Spirotot instead - I think because it was cheaper. I was offended (because I wasn't a toddler).

There’s nothing that I really wanted but didn’t get, which makes me very fortunate, I suppose.
Although I was by no means spoiled!

Ah, I did really want a make up kit when I was about 11 or so. Never got it.
I have make up here that will never get used up, even if I wore it every day till I die 😂

My best ever present was Active Sindy. I loved her so much!

I often look on eBay for one.

RockahulaRocks · 16/11/2024 17:43

Big Yellow Teapot. I’m 45 and it still immediately comes to mind if anyone asks this question. However I did have a Cadburys vending machine with the mini chocolate bars and it was AMAZING.

Thischangeseverything · 16/11/2024 17:44

I did want Mr Frosty back in the day, but now I realise my parents were right and no longer feel wistful.

Hmm. I did always want a dolls house - the old fashioned type. I have considered buying it as an adult.

A posh fancy Ascot type hat. Mum never let me try on the ones in Debenhams! No point in buying one now, I have nowhere to wear one!

Oh, and Brio! I loved the train set in the Early Learning Centre window. I have brio for my dc now and play with it myself.

Dearg · 16/11/2024 17:49

Scalectrix. My cousin had one and I was so jealous .
Would have lived that Cadbury’s dispenser too, but it would have been empty very quickly .

Dreamphone! Still sad about it😂

I love(d) sylvanian families, I never had the dolls house but had another with all the sylvanian furniture which my 5 year old now plays with.

I remember asking my parents for years for hungry hippos and when I finally got it it was really disappointed.

I always wanted mouse trap, the adverts made it look so exciting.

2Magpies24 · 16/11/2024 17:52

I did get an a la carte kitchen which I’d longed for… the advert made me obsessed with making beans and Swiss roll for my parents. I was so disappointed when I got it and it didn’t heat up food at all! I thought it was a real oven!

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 16/11/2024 17:52

A pony. Always a pony for about 8 years running, and it was the regrettable and continued lack of a pony that finally got me sceptical...

I used to wish for one every single time I got the wishbone from our roast chicken as well. It never worked. Sad
