Are we going to die?

Over dramatic title.

My husband is an idiot. On Monday I realised 2 packs of diced pork had gone off before being used. Bin day is not until Friday so I discussed the best way to dispose of them, he suggested leaving them in the fridge until bin day so they didn't stink out the bins. I had new pork arriving Tuesday so clearly told him the old stuff was on the bottom left.

This evening I was out at a college open evening, and he cooked pork kebabs. Predictably, he used the old pork, and this did not come out until we had finished eating. I once again mention it was HIS suggestion to leave it in the fridge 🙄

The bloody stuff went off 8 days ago. 8. We all ate 2/3 kebabs of it, so probably 8-10 pork chunks each.

We have 2 toilets and there are 4 of us who ate it. Are we going to have to do bathroom lottery tonight? Will we be dead by morning? Shall I offer hubby as a sacrifice if the rest of us can avoid illness?

I'd have put it at the bottom of the garden. Foxes would have got rid of every scrap by morning.

TheShellBeach · 14/11/2024 22:01

And no, it seems my husband does not possess common sense, which is a pity because he's quite nice otherwise

Yes, mine is the same.

You are certainly going to die.

Now? Not as likely.

BashfulClam · 14/11/2024 21:37

Nah that’s Scottish as it’s exactly how I speak.

Same difference. 😀

It is the same turn of phrase you'd hear back home. The praying bit threw me - we do a lot of it - and we have a vast number of saints to pray to ,for every ailment known to man... including the pork induced variety.

Pinkbonbon · 14/11/2024 22:09

Stock up on toilet rolls cause chances are you're going to be on the shitter for a few days.

You'll be fine though!

If the meat didn't smell off and it was cooked properly, you will most likely be fine.

However, a common misconception that many people have is that food poisoning happens right away after eating the bad food. That certainly happens with some bacteria, but others can have up to a week-10 days incubation, for example campylobacter. So don't assume you're out of the woods just because you don't get sick within 24 hours, unfortunately.

Yeah it was 3 days for me with campylobacter and I didn't have a clue I had eaten anything that was "wrong", it just hit out the blue

I’ve heard that in Australia they keep food waste in the freezer to avoid it going off in the bin in the summer. That might be an option for next time? Just wrap it in a coloured bag or something.

Good luck with the toilet situation for tonight!

I buy our meat from a local butcher. Nothing has a date on it. I use common sense to decide if something's gone off. Trust your senses. Fingers crossed it'll all be ok.

Is this even allowed??

I ate ten day past smoke salmon when 7m pregnant! Phoned the hospital in sheer panic, luckily was fine, no effects at all

MathsandStats · 14/11/2024 22:20

I once ate sausages that were 10 days past their use by date because I was a student and couldn’t afford to waste them. I also suspect we didn’t have the best student fridge.

I’m going to be honest here, I didn’t have my best ever couple of days afterwards. But I am alive, and it didn’t take any medical intervention to keep me that way. So I’m reassured you won’t die.

PickAChew · 14/11/2024 22:21

It's not like it would have stunk out the outdoor bins that quickly, at this time of year. It's not been much warmer than the fridge, outside.

If it was off, wouldn’t you just wrap it up well and put it in an ordinary bin? I would.

DaisyDukesAuntie · 14/11/2024 22:30

Fingers crossed for you, I think you'll be fine if it was well cooked

nopenotplaying · 14/11/2024 22:44

Any rumblings going on yet? There would be signs by now 🤢

Healingsfall · 14/11/2024 22:48

If you are going to be ill from food poisoning it may take a few days to appear.

@Autumnweddingguest

Do you reckon Foxes (and dogs and cats for that matter) die from food poisoning?

I wonder this, too. I hate waste and have often thought about putting certain left over / unused food out for foxes, but don’t want to make them ill!

pl228 · 14/11/2024 22:53

Hope you don't get ill OP. Surely it would have smelled manky if it was really badly off?

billybear · 14/11/2024 22:54

Foxes raid bins so won't care and would love it.
I often do them a goody bag of out of date eggs and meat.

Waffle78 · 14/11/2024 22:59

I use meat a few days out of date all the time. As long as it looks and smells okay it's fine.

MattSmithsBowTie · 14/11/2024 22:59

My MIL once brought round some pork that she’d defrosted out of her freezer and when I started to cook it it smelled like rancid death, I was heaving, when I looked at the label it had been in her freezer for 2 years, none of the men in the house could smell it.

buffyspikefaithangel · 14/11/2024 23:00

I think people think food poisoning is a lot quicker than it is and that you know if something is off. Also that it clears up quickly
Was 11 days for me and that was with antibiotics too!

Mine was a meal at a restaurant on Wed pm and the symptoms started Saturday pm and that was a 40c temp and rivers of sweat, the other stuff didn't start for another 48hrs

They couldn’t smell the rotten meat?! 😳 is this a thing?

JaroSally · 14/11/2024 23:14
