Are we going to die?

Over dramatic title.

My husband is an idiot. On Monday I realised 2 packs of diced pork had gone off before being used. Bin day is not until Friday so I discussed the best way to dispose of them, he suggested leaving them in the fridge until bin day so they didn't stink out the bins. I had new pork arriving Tuesday so clearly told him the old stuff was on the bottom left.

This evening I was out at a college open evening, and he cooked pork kebabs. Predictably, he used the old pork, and this did not come out until we had finished eating. I once again mention it was HIS suggestion to leave it in the fridge 🙄

The bloody stuff went off 8 days ago. 8. We all ate 2/3 kebabs of it, so probably 8-10 pork chunks each.

We have 2 toilets and there are 4 of us who ate it. Are we going to have to do bathroom lottery tonight? Will we be dead by morning? Shall I offer hubby as a sacrifice if the rest of us can avoid illness?

You can’t tell if something is safe to eat by sniffing it. You can generally only use sight and smell to judge the quality of foods(as in how they will taste, pleasant texture etc). If the quality has just declined it’s probably not going to make you sick e.g. curdled milk. If the food has something like norovirus, salmonella or E. coli in it, they can make you sick at very small levels, far, far below the point where you could actually smell it or taste it. If food has pathogens like this present and is also past its best, it will probably make you sicker because the pathogens have had more opportunity to multiply. But they need to be already present.

twomanyfrogsinabox · 14/11/2024 21:02

Should have written on it in bold felt tip 'DO NOT EAT'.

katepilar · 14/11/2024 21:03

You would have noticed if it was off.

Best before date isnt a date whe food goes off.

TriesNotToBeCynical · 14/11/2024 21:03

RichardOsmansfondueset · 14/11/2024 20:01

I think that if it was off then he would have known as it would have smelled really bad when it was opened. Hopefully you'll be okay and it was completely cooked through.

Just for information, some food poisoning toxins are heat stable. So thorough cooking does not necessarily stop you getting food poisoning from meat that's gone off.

Wonkywinky · 14/11/2024 21:05

Buckets all round by the beds .

Crusuzy2 · 14/11/2024 21:07

I don't know but you've inspired me to make pork kebabs so thank you! I'd never thought of it! What do you add with them?

katepilar · 14/11/2024 21:14

Justlikeheavenn · 14/11/2024 20:52

I have no idea if you’ll have a dreadful bathroom night OP but best of luck!!

However I can’t work out the logic of stinking out the fridge/kitchen over the outside bin? 😂

Whats the outside temperature where you are?

LBFseBrom · 14/11/2024 21:15

Next time, double or triple bag it and put it in the dustbin. It won't make the bin smell if you do that.

shuggles · 14/11/2024 21:17

People all around the world routinely eat meat which is of a much more questionable quality than what you ate.

letmego24 · 14/11/2024 21:19

YABVU to eat pork!! Gross

PeaceOutGirlScout · 14/11/2024 21:20

You're usually definitely ok to eat meat a day or two after the use by. 8 days is cutting it by anyone's standards but him saying it smelt a bit weird is totally different to 8 days basically already rotted and smelling of death. So there's that.

You HAVE to update us! Thoughts and prayers Flowers

No we have a food bin as black bags are only 3 weekly. The food bin can only take food and no packaging, so it would have been fairly grim after sitting in it for several days. We have had bin maggots before and I do not wish for a repeat!

You just double compostable bag it and put it in the food bin. You only get maggots if the bags leak or break.

Then wash the packaging and put in recycling.

But if you couldn't smell it and it was thoroughly cooked you'll be fine

cannynotsay · 14/11/2024 21:23

Anyone just here for the updates

SemperIdem · 14/11/2024 21:23

You’ll be fine, most likely.

twomanyfrogsinabox · 14/11/2024 21:02

Anyone else thinking of the Arrested Development reference 'DEAD DOVE DO NOT EAT'? 🕊🤣

Healingsfall · 14/11/2024 21:27

Knockon · 14/11/2024 19:43

let this be the lesson that use by dates are a farce, and sight smell and taste are more important.

if you managed to eat almost all of it with no detectable issues, then chances are you will both be fine

Food poisoning bacteria can't be seen, smelt or tasted. Spoilage bacteria can, but spoilage bacteria aren't what causes food poisoning.

If it was going to hurt you, he'd have probably noticed when he opened the packet! Best before dates are only a guide, there are too many variables to know how long something is really going to last.

Sebsaloysius · 14/11/2024 21:34

I don't like that the OP has gone very quiet.....!

There's no hope: plug yer arses and pray.
😆

You have to be Irish - if not - you should be.

Nah that’s Scottish as it’s exactly how I speak.

Workhardcryharder · 14/11/2024 21:37

you almost definitely would have noticed had it been off!

AGreatUsername · 14/11/2024 21:42

We are still alive 😀

Yeah I probably should have bagged and put in food waste, but it's unseasonably warm here and as it was sealed in packaging I assumed staying in the fridge would be better.

And no, it seems my husband does not possess common sense, which is a pity because he's quite nice otherwise. Next time I will write on the packet to save a 45 year old man using his eyes and brain. Okay, that was sarcasm, and if we survive the night (week) I will forgive and forget and only mention this several times a year to him.

Wherethewildthingsfart · 14/11/2024 21:43

I’ve never eaten meat but even I know that it would have stunk (more than usual).
Does he have no sense of smell?
Also, you suspected that he might be a dumb arse so surely you should have checked?

Differentstarts · 14/11/2024 21:45

Yes you are, R.I.P op 🙏 😢💀🐖⚰️

TheSerenityPrayer · 14/11/2024 21:49

You'd have known if it was too far gone. You should be fine. It's easier to use common sense, rather than bbe... the look and smell of a food will usually tell you it's gone off, and the taste will as well.

Teateaandmoretea · 14/11/2024 22:00

Yes OP, none of us are getting out of this alive
