Are we going to die?

Over dramatic title.

My husband is an idiot. On Monday I realised 2 packs of diced pork had gone off before being used. Bin day is not until Friday so I discussed the best way to dispose of them, he suggested leaving them in the fridge until bin day so they didn't stink out the bins. I had new pork arriving Tuesday so clearly told him the old stuff was on the bottom left.

This evening I was out at a college open evening, and he cooked pork kebabs. Predictably, he used the old pork, and this did not come out until we had finished eating. I once again mention it was HIS suggestion to leave it in the fridge 🙄

The bloody stuff went off 8 days ago. 8. We all ate 2/3 kebabs of it, so probably 8-10 pork chunks each.

We have 2 toilets and there are 4 of us who ate it. Are we going to have to do bathroom lottery tonight? Will we be dead by morning? Shall I offer hubby as a sacrifice if the rest of us can avoid illness?

It’s not quite the same but I ate some salmon accidentally 3 days last best before and I was waiting to be violently ill and never was. You might be okay!!!

Rosejasmine · 14/11/2024 20:25

You’ll find out soon enough. I’d have been very upset but I’m funny about meat and use by dates.
However it won’t kill you and I think you’ll all be ok, I assume it was cooked through properly…

No we have a food bin as black bags are only 3 weekly. The food bin can only take food and no packaging, so it would have been fairly grim after sitting in it for several days. We have had bin maggots before and I do not wish for a repeat!

Ours is the same. Indoor caddy for food waste/peelings. Caddy bag put in food bin outside during the week. It clips tightly shut. Collected each week. I've had maggots in there before (gross) but they'd mostly get chucked with the bin collection. If not then clean the bin. Maggot are part of the composting process.

TerrysNeapolitan · 14/11/2024 20:28

You would know if the meat was off just by the smell I use loads of meat way past sell by date/eat by date, that is an arse covering date you will all be fine.

niadainud · 14/11/2024 20:29

Astonishing that at no point during the process of preparing or cooking these kebabs was his memory jogged about the conversation concerning out-of-date pork.

AgathaX · 14/11/2024 20:31

I buy our meat from a local butcher. Nothing has a date on it. I use common sense to decide if something's gone off. Trust your senses. Fingers crossed it'll all be ok.

PrinnyPree · 14/11/2024 20:32

If it was rancid he would have smelled it as soon as he opened the packet and if it was off it would have stunk whilst he was cooking it as it was heating up. Also you would have tasted it if it was off. If all of those things were okay the meat was probably fine. I reckon if you don't have a squiffy tummy in the next 24-48hrs you're probably fine. Xx Obvs keep a close eye if anyone vulnerable (very young, very old or disabled) ate any.

VapeVamp12 · 14/11/2024 20:33

He would have known if it was actually off. I've used meat well past its "date" (maybe not 8 days). Some I've gotten rid of before the date because it just wasn't right.

Smell and colour discolouration is a good indicator. Also if its in a sealed plastic packet (the kind with plastic punnet type bottom and film top, another good indicator is if the packet is slightly puffed up as bacteria releases gases.

ttcat37 · 14/11/2024 20:35

If it looked, smelled and tasted alright, then it was fine. I’d be quite pleased if I was you, sounds like you kept 2 packets of meat out of landfill, which is much better especially when an animal died for your dinner.

MontyPythonSnake · 14/11/2024 20:36

You'll be fine. But the downside of you all being fine is that he'll have no incentive to not be so careless in future. So maybe you'll have to fake projectile vomit on him.

haje · 14/11/2024 20:37

Smell is key.

DH worst sickness was chicken IN DATE but stinking. He was like it's in date??

Farmer here. We farm to freeze for personal use now. If it's off it's off from a supermarket

Eight days over and off you would smell taste and see.

BobbyBiscuits · 14/11/2024 20:42

You'd be sick pretty badly within a couple of days if if was contaminated.
I find it hard to believe it wouldn't have been to disgusting to cook, slimy etc? And the taste was ok? If so they can't have been rotten?

Either way there's not much to be done now but drink tons of water and maybe some charcoal tablets, just as a precaution. If you do get unwell at least you can tell the doctors the reason why.

But hopefully you'll be fine. No thanks to your husband! Next time chuck it out and let the bins stink.

When you say "went off", do you mean you detected signs of rotting, or it hit the date on the label?

If the former then you should have got it out of the house somehow, by any means (triple-wrap it in the bin, leave it out for the foxes, flush it down the loo). If the latter it'll probably be fine as long as it was kept constantly cold. Use-by dates on fresh food have pretty big margins.

Frith2013 · 14/11/2024 20:47

Ooo, you don't hear of scrofula much these days.

(You'll be fine)

TheShellBeach · 14/11/2024 20:50

Surely you'd have noticed that it was really off.

IAmNotAMorningPerson · 14/11/2024 20:51

If the meat didn't smell off and it was cooked properly, you will most likely be fine.

However, a common misconception that many people have is that food poisoning happens right away after eating the bad food. That certainly happens with some bacteria, but others can have up to a week-10 days incubation, for example campylobacter. So don't assume you're out of the woods just because you don't get sick within 24 hours, unfortunately.

teatoast8 · 14/11/2024 20:52

You'll be reet

Justlikeheavenn · 14/11/2024 20:52

I have no idea if you’ll have a dreadful bathroom night OP but best of luck!!

However I can’t work out the logic of stinking out the fridge/kitchen over the outside bin? 😂

Barney16 · 14/11/2024 20:54

My husband, because he has worked in many remote places with rudimentary facilities for storage of food, and often not much food, eats meat wildly out of date and is never ever ill. He cooks and eats meat that I will not touch. His rule if thumb is that if it is packaging and not opened, and it doesn't reek when he does open it is fine. If it smells bad it's a no. Otherwise he takes no notice of a sell by or use by date. He's a braver man than me.

dapsnotplimsolls · 14/11/2024 20:55

If you all fall ill, he gets a bucket, not the bathroom.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 14/11/2024 20:59

It might be fine. DH would have smelt it when he cooked it if it was that bad, and you would have tasted it. Use by dates are pretty random and if your fridge is on the cold side it will last longer. Fingers crossed for you all.

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 14/11/2024 19:50

I check everything by sight and smell regardless of what the date on it is.

Surely everyone does this?

No, because that would be common sense which we don’t use anymore, remember?

twomanyfrogsinabox · 14/11/2024 21:00

If you weren't sick almost immediately it probably wasn't that bad. Usually the worse the poisoning the quicker the effects, you'll probably all be fine. Hopefully it was well cooked!

There's no hope: plug yer arses and pray.

Nah, you'll probably be fine. Nobody noticed funny colours or smells so I wouldn't worry.
