Are we going to die?

Over dramatic title.

My husband is an idiot. On Monday I realised 2 packs of diced pork had gone off before being used. Bin day is not until Friday so I discussed the best way to dispose of them, he suggested leaving them in the fridge until bin day so they didn't stink out the bins. I had new pork arriving Tuesday so clearly told him the old stuff was on the bottom left.

This evening I was out at a college open evening, and he cooked pork kebabs. Predictably, he used the old pork, and this did not come out until we had finished eating. I once again mention it was HIS suggestion to leave it in the fridge 🙄

The bloody stuff went off 8 days ago. 8. We all ate 2/3 kebabs of it, so probably 8-10 pork chunks each.

We have 2 toilets and there are 4 of us who ate it. Are we going to have to do bathroom lottery tonight? Will we be dead by morning? Shall I offer hubby as a sacrifice if the rest of us can avoid illness?

Fingers crossed his sense of smell is OK cos if it isn't, get the imodium ready....

Do not take imodium for food poisoning!

You need to shit that food out for a reason!

Non meat eater here, so what do I know!

But I never bother with ‘use by’ dates. If it looks OK, smells OK and tastes OK, and it’s been kept chilled, it’s usually fine.

DreamTheMoors · 14/11/2024 23:34

I once had a cleaner who threw out almost everything in my fridge because of the stupid sell-by dates.
It cost over £100 to replace things like mustard & horseradish & pickles & things like that.
I should’ve charged her.

Food poisoning bacteria cannot be detected by looks, smells or taste.

YABVU to eat pork!! Gross

What’s wrong with eating pork? It’s just as tasty as any other meat!

@Autumnweddingguest

Do you reckon Foxes (and dogs and cats for that matter) die from food poisoning?

My stupid Labrador has poisoned himself on more than one occasion - once by eating a load of windfall plums including the stones, once by eating two loaves of mouldy bread (he worked out how to get into our food waste bins!), once by eating a two pound Christmas pudding laced with brandy and the last time was eating a huge bar of Bournville chocolate (including the wrapper). Eating stinking rotting fish, a rotting rabbit and what may or may not have been a decomposed seagull however had zero effect on him so who knows 🤷‍♀️

He’s still with us by the way and almost 13 although I have no idea how!

loropianalover · 14/11/2024 23:11

They couldn’t smell the rotten meat?! 😳 is this a thing?

I don’t know if it’s a thing but I’ve definitely noticed the men in my life aren’t as aware of the smell off ‘off’ food, I once watched my DB eat a piece of mouldy bread in a sandwich and when I pointed it out he said it tasted fine.

dontcryformeargentina · 15/11/2024 00:13

If it was off, it would have smelled like shit + maggots

ivegoneswimming · 15/11/2024 00:21

My DH got food poisoning from a Chinese takeaway which smelt OK at the time. He was in hospital on a drip for quite a few days and lost a lot of weight.

No we have a food bin as black bags are only 3 weekly. The food bin can only take food and no packaging, so it would have been fairly grim after sitting in it for several days. We have had bin maggots before and I do not wish for a repeat!

The world won't end if you put the occasional pack of sealed food into your general waste bin you know.

Anyway, it sounds like it wasn't off and you'll be fine.

JillyGoat · 14/11/2024 22:18

Is this even allowed??

I ate ten day past smoke salmon when 7m pregnant! Phoned the hospital in sheer panic, luckily was fine, no effects at all

Of course it's allowed. I only buy meat from a local butcher. Some of it is in packets with best before dates e.g packages of venison mince or stewing venison, but much is just wrapped up when you buy it. They make gorgeous sausages and black pudding - no dates on that.

The fishmonger opposite them has no dates on their products, nor does the greengrocer or cheesemonger.

HoppingPavlova · 15/11/2024 00:38

If it didn’t smell off, and tasted okay, you should all be fine. No coffins required.

Same here. Proper butchers and fishmongers don't add dates.

My MIL once brought round some pork that she’d defrosted out of her freezer and when I started to cook it it smelled like rancid death, I was heaving, when I looked at the label it had been in her freezer for 2 years, none of the men in the house could smell it.

Stuff stays in my freezer for years and smells, and tastes, fine. The interesting thing about this tale though is that I've never seen a year as part of the use by date on fresh food. So when I get something out of the freezer and it says "24th July" I have no idea which year it was. Tins and dried foods have a year, but fresh stuff doesn't tend to. And once frozen it won't grow any bacteria. So I imagine the MIL in this tale shoved it in the freezer after it had already gone bad.

FloofPaws · 15/11/2024 00:43

Is your DH related to mine ... he does stupid things like that's too 😵‍💫

High fat foods (like meat) can go rancid in the freezer. Not necessarily very harmful, but can taste nasty and upset one's stomach. You really should start putting year labels on it! Though I always forget.

I think people think food poisoning is a lot quicker than it is and that you know if something is off. Also that it clears up quickly
Was 11 days for me and that was with antibiotics too!

Mine was a meal at a restaurant on Wed pm and the symptoms started Saturday pm and that was a 40c temp and rivers of sweat, the other stuff didn't start for another 48hrs

I’ve always wondered this. How do you know where it came from??

GPs and path labs are supposed to report food poisoning when it is bad enough to see a doctor, and the local public health collate the reports and see what they have in common.

Maybe they can, but in 56 years of being alive and using a freezer I have never known it to happen. I guess statistically I'm getting close....

ShortCircuited · 15/11/2024 01:02

In future put it in the freezer and write BIN on it. It will also come out in a nice frozen lump when you put it in the bin rather than having putrid juices over it. I often do this in the summer if we have wasted meat/fish.

Hope you all stay well with no effects OP.

CatalinaLoo · 15/11/2024 01:03

I had some 9 month old gammon frozen straight from an in-date supermarket packet the other day which tasted distinctly less good than normal. Off course it could have been a bad batch to start with. But it reminded me not to do that.

UnrealRita · 15/11/2024 01:11

Well there are only three of you to fight over two loos, as it's very clear who will be in the garden hovering over a bucket!
