Twitter is basically Truth Social now

My 'Following' tab is dead because everyone interesting has left.

My 'For you' tab is full of Elon Musk's prolific blithering and other right wing shit, and AI bots commenting on posts generated by AI bots.

Given Musk's exceptionally prominent role in Trump's new government, is it appropriate for UK politicians to be posting on there? I don't think they'd use Truth Social.

Such a shame, it used to be great.

Scary thing is that lots of people spend half their lives there and believe everything they read!

cariadlet · 13/11/2024 20:12

I get plenty of interesting stuff in my timeline: environmental issues, science, art, history, Terfy Twitter and - best of all - a lovely account dedicated to Ladybird Books.

cariadlet · 13/11/2024 20:13

Lots of stuff about women's rights, especially what is happening in Afghanistan and in Iran.

Probably because people can hate on Muslims in the comments. That's certainly what I'm seeing on that sort of post.

All I see is hate for Israel on Twitter/X. (Not Muslims,) And hate for anyone who isn't far left politically. And hate for JK Rowling.

I'm assuming you don't want to see the stuff that it's showing you either?

I agree it is now inappropriate for politicians apart from members of the GOP to post there.

IncessantNameChanger · 13/11/2024 20:44

I fully agree. I follow Nasa, New Scientist, Prof Brian Cox, European space agency and various SEN parents. So solid Scientists and SEN groups. My feed is full of non white Americans people kicking off with the caption "what is going on here?" Reams and reams of it. Nothing about my likes suggests I'm interested in right wing shit. It's a cess pit now. I feel actually traumatised going on there now as I don't want to see that kind if thing full stop. I don't know why anyone is fighting but maybe someone pinched some girls bum for all I know.

What's really upsetting is there is a market for such tripe. Someone loves it. Elon has turned into the character in Johnny English.

Maybe I'm lucky with the accounts that I follow but the tweets I see about women in Afghanistan and Iran tend to have comments from people in support of women's rights and critical of the Taliban and the Iranian government (not anti Muslim comments).

I have 2 personal Twitter accounts and access to 3 group accounts. I genuinely haven't come across racist or extreme right wing shit on any of them.

Someone on another thread was saying Trump and Musk will fall out majorly at some point. That could be interesting.

You posted that you were seeing a lot of hate on your twitter account. I'm assuming that you're not interested in it?

Logging in to see lots of hate directed anywhere wasn't what twitter used to be like, unless you actively chose it, I guess.

He'll certainly post about it on twitter if they do.

It's always been a bit rubbish but I have only ever used it so I can complain to companies or find out why my electric might be off. I don't follow anyone and nobody follows me and I only post if needs must, as above, it's easier than signing up to Facebook to do the same thing

JaneDSE9 · 13/11/2024 21:15

I get sent a lot of right wing baiting content from people I don't follow so I just tell Twitter I don't want to see this content. This has only happened since Musk took over.

kaymay12 · 13/11/2024 21:18

I have finally deleted Twitter after 11 years. I've had lot's of informative and entertaining engagement over the years but unfortunately the last couple have just been too toxic to bear. I've been on Bluesky a few months and have to say it's refreshing to engage in non combative discussion about all subjects.

martinisforeveryone · 13/11/2024 21:18

I saw today that The Guardian will no longer be posting on X.

I moved to Bluesky some months ago and am seeing a massive influx of posters who've also migrated.

DuncinToffee · 13/11/2024 21:19

BlueSky has had record numbers signing up this week

I think it's because BlueSky was originally set up by Jack Dorsey who also helped start Twitter/X. The format is virtually the same but the blocking is excellent, the engagement is very civilised. Lots of Twitter/X community have migrated over there

The Ladybird Lady Helen Day is on Bluesky too

martinisforeveryone · 13/11/2024 21:34

I also find that the engagement is much better on BlueSky and there are starter packs which make it easier to find your interests and people who're like minded.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 13/11/2024 21:35

I did wonder whether to scrap it, and I still might.

Scrimt · 13/11/2024 21:36

I used to love Twitter but deleted my account a while ago. I didn't leave in a strop but it became tedious to try and navigate. Everything clogged up with responses from blue tick Musk superfans with 37 followers.

Folkwhore · 13/11/2024 21:37

I deleted Twitter at the weekend after 14 years and joined Bluesky yesterday. Lots of people i chose to follow on Twitter on Bluesky already and much healthier debate. I got tired of aggressive right wing posts, conspiracy theorists and porn on my twitter feed, none of which i had expressed an interest in seeing.

Eyesopenwideawake · 13/11/2024 21:37

Interesting that James O'Brien, the Guardian, Stephen Fry, George Takei (and now me) have quit X for Bluesky.
