I need to tell someone!

Today, I was looking for an espresso cup and discovered that they are currently as rare as hens teeth.
While going into one of several charity shops in my town, I was shocked to see a coffee set in a dining set that I had.
This set was from the 60's and was only used for important occasions. I inherited it when my dad died and it sat in a cupboard gathering dust. My dad has been gone since 2005.
I was totally shocked, to the point where I apologised to the shop lady and explained the reason why I was.
15 minutes later, she had my entire collection and I now have an empty cupboard.
Had I not seen this, that set would have sat in a cupboard until I died.

Thank you for understanding.

I understood too, OP. 👍💕

geekygardener · 13/11/2024 19:14

Op I have seen that set before in the kitchen of a church where I sometimes rent a room. Are the tea cups quite small? I absolutely love drinking out of them because they are not like today's cups and Im sure the tea tastes better in them. In my head anyway.

I'm a collector of retro and vintage stuff, particularly mid century. My favourite day out is browsing the charity shop to see what 60s/70s treasures people have donated.

Along with the lack of espresso cups, il add number 7 birthday candles. DCs 7th birthday was last week. I found plenty of every other number candle in all shops but number 7 was sold out everywhere. I went to 3 major supermarkets and my mum went to two different ones, in a different town. Luckily we found one at card factory. How bizarre that all shops had sold out of number 7s only.

I think that was a lovely thing to do (and I got it straight away).

I dream of the charity shop find where the EXACT tea cups I'm after in Royal Doulton Spindrift or Frost Pine is just there. Peeking out from behind a wonky egg cup. I have to contend with eBay because I'm never going to find it in my local charity shop.
But there will be that one happy person who loves your set OP.
My family will despair when they realise they have to clear out my dining room corner cabinet. It's rammed with Frost Pine crockery I never use. Maybe I'll have your Damascene moment and give it all away again, but until then, I'll get it out and polish it every year or so and promise myself a 1960s dinner party. It's no less bonkers than blokes polishing classic cars they never drive.
I might treat myself to a lidded tureen next.

Sweet baby Jebus all I wanted, was to share something because I had no one else to talk to.
I didn't realise this was a creative writing essay.
I was looking for espresso cups.
The charity shop had some crockery that was the same as a set that I had inherited.
I was amazed that it was there, cuz I'd never seen it anywhere else.
I apologised because I was amazed that it was there and I was standing in the shop gobsmacked.
I went home and removed the set I had, from my kitchen cupboard and put it into a shopping trolley and trundled to the charity shop and removed the items, TO ADD TO THE SET THEY ALREADY HAD. Because I would never use it, as I am on my own and ain't nobody gonna invade my safe space.

I know what you mean, suddenly coming across something in a charity shop unexpected. I needed a pair of shoes for my DC and just happened to come across the exact style, size, width needed, in excellent condition. Moments like this do bring a sense of oh my word!

The 'safe space' thing? I hope there are some people you trust to let in, we all need those. Xx

Reading that just gave me a brain haemorrhage

I understood your post. Unexpectedly seeing an uncommon pattern that had been used for special occasions in your family reminded you had the same unused collection at home.

You then donated your pieces to expand the set for sale in the charity shop. A keepsake in a cupboard will, when sold, hopefully be used once again.

I bought a vintage Meakin Galaxy dinner set from a charity shop about 7 years ago and it's in daily use in my home. Place settings for 8, serving platters, tureens that I bought to match the coffee set for 16 with sandwich plates
I already had.

Donating your dad's set has freed up cupboard space, will benefit the charity and the buyer will have a set they have chosen. All good things! I hope you find espresso cups, OP.

Thank you for the translation. 🤜🤛

Caswallonthefox · 13/11/2024 00:28

Oh and cuz I can.
There are 10 charity shops in my town, none had espresso cups.
Sainsbury's didn't, QD didn't, ROYS didn't.
Originally I was looking for espresso cups.
I have a sports direct bag and my ex husband ( the areshole) had the cup.

Hi OP, can I just ask where you are please? I know there are a few Roys shops in Wroxham.

I think it was nice for you to donate the cups. However the charity shop prices them it's nice to give them a bigger set. If you ever need them you could probably find some online,

fatphalange · 14/11/2024 19:49

It's a sweet story!

Standing gobsmacked in the charity shop is the new 'screaming in the Sistine chapel' in my eyes and for that I thank you 😂

How long were you standing in the shop gobsmacked and how much of a gobsmacked expression were you pulling to feel you had to apologise and explain? Do people really do that? Stand in a gobsmacked pose?

downwindofyou · 14/11/2024 20:00

If that is Wedgewood Royal Tuscan Cascade, you could have sold it

wedgewood royal tuscan.cascade

Although hopefully the charity shop will benefit

Talipesmum · 14/11/2024 20:04

OP I really like that you wanted an espresso cup for measuring out oats. I have an old Beatrix potter child’s cup from when I was a toddler and my porridge quantities are measured “up to henny penny’s legs” on the inside of the cup, and the milk in full cups worth.

Middleagedspreadisreal · 14/11/2024 20:10

Where did you get a shopping trolley from?

Skyview7 · 14/11/2024 20:38

I love this place 😊

Ikea sell espresso cups☕

FeetLikeFlippers · 14/11/2024 21:44

It looks like Midwinter or Meakin but I can’t identify the pattern. I understood your post because I too have been known to get over-excited in a charity shop! I also get obsessed with searching for particular things because I collect antiques but love a bargain. Good luck with your quest to find espresso cups!

Ifihadamagicwand · 14/11/2024 22:13

Tuscany is all I know

I really need to know what happened in Tuscany that led to you banning all future visitors from your home? I’m imagining a sequel to In Bruges
