Having a poo in someone else's house - Is there an etiquette for you?

UniqueFinch · 10/11/2024 21:34

So this is a question that I never really thought I would be asking on MN. Curiosity has now got the better of me. I had a discussion with my DM recently and she said wouldn't ever have a poo in someone else's house. To be honest, I haven't found myself in a situation where I've been in someone else's house and I've really needed to have one. I usually only go at home or in the workplace toilet. If I was on holiday I would go in the hotel bathroom, or if I was on a plane or train I would use the toilet there. I would basically have one anywhere if I really needed to, as most people presumably would, but there is something about going in someone's house other than my own that makes me not want to.
Is there a certain friendship or relationship threshold that you need to be at with someone to be comfortable with it? For example would you go in a close friend or family member's house, but not someone who is just an acquaintance? I probably wouldn't want to in any of those scenarios.

Since we inherited parents house, I actually have never pooped anywhere in my whole life apart from one toilet. When we go away I just hold it in until we are home again !

@Bogginsthe3rd For me, you win this thread. 😂

SnowFrogJelly · 11/11/2024 00:49

All so weird.. I go when and where I need to

Incakewetrust · 11/11/2024 00:49

I will only go at home because I'm an absolute weirdo 😂 if I'm in a hotel then obviously I'll use the en-suite but it has to be a private bathroom that no one else uses (except for DH and kids).
Recently on a night out in the nearest city, I was absolutely desperate and started looking for cheap hotels I could book, just to use the toilet 😂 unfortunately there were none with rooms available so I just held it and was v uncomfortable for the next 7 hours 🙃

Again recently, DH and I stayed with some friends abroad for a long weekend. I didn't go for the entire time we were there 😑

Sorry but that's really bad for you
Don't you realise it's perfectly natural and everyone does it

Remember the girl on a first date at boys house and had one that wouldn't flush so she tried to throw it out the window and it got stuck on the outside of the window for everyone to see💩

This is absolutely astonishing to me.

I would never..! I find it a bit odd that people need to go at unpredictable times. I’ve never had that happen to me ever, even when ill! I’ve probably had diarrhoea once in my whole life and don’t you just stay home because you are ill?? Aren’t most people eating regular meals and have fairly consistent lifestyles so I just don’t understand why people ‘suddenly’ need to go! Or rush to the loo. Unless you’ve got health issues. Honestly I think if you do have to suddenly rush to the loo and it’s that unpredictable you likely have health problems or live a poor lifestyle.. maybe both! I’m clearly in the minority based on this thread but honestly I can’t relate to this ‘sudden’ need to go!

Wow. Fucking gold star for you for never having to go at an “unpredictable time” and never tarnishing anyone else’s toilet.

Congratulations on such an amazing achievement.

I’ve always considered Mumsnet to attract the middle-classes. This thread confirms this!

Me and my friends are as common as muck, or maybe just down to earth. I’ll happily announce that I need a shit and disappear upstairs, hoping to make the most hideous stench possible.

If a toilet is available and you need a shit, just use the bloody thing. It’s what it is there for. Holding it in isn’t great for one’s health and it must spoil social occasions with a teddy bear’s arm half hanging out of your sphincter!

Clean up the bowl afterwards if necessary and luxuriate in the fact that you’re using someone else’s bog roll. Remember, keep the windows and doors shut for that priceless reaction!

I know it's bad for me but it's completely psychological. While we were there, I did try to go but literally nothing happened.
It's such a mental block that I can't seem to get past.

caringcarer · 11/11/2024 01:46

I prefer to use a toilet in my own home but really if I need to poo I do. I make sure the loo is left clean, turn on the fan or squirt air freshener if there is any handy. Wash hands. Job done.

TequilaNights · 11/11/2024 01:46

I go where I need to go, which is often, thanks to intolerances and I make sure all my bathrooms have plenty of loo roll and spray (plus auto sprays so the pooper doesn't have to worry that you will guess because they sprayed) soap and clean towels.

Drives me mad that there's a stigma about using a toilet for its intended purposes.

MinaHarker1897 · 11/11/2024 01:54

Some horrible people at work make an explosion in the toilet and don't clean it up. I've been in to use the toilet, opened the door and seen it and then legged it hoping nobody saw me and thought I had left it in that state and gone to find a toilet on a different floor, it was mortifying and it wasn't even my 💩

Procrastination4 · 11/11/2024 01:55

Mandoidi · 10/11/2024 22:09

Have the poo. It's OK.

Just don't throw it out of the window when it won't flush.
And don't try to get it back when it gets stuck in between the window and a grille.
And definitely don't climb out and try to retrieve it.
And if you do, just don't get stuck.
On a first date.

Everything else- fine.

I remember that thread! It was such a crazy situation that she found herself in!😂

Your post reminded me of Ali G at the door and saying "l is turtling. l is actually touching cloth." 😮

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/11/2024 02:05

When I worked in a school in France, there was a 3 cubicle mixed sex loo in the staff room. One of the teachers used to poo in the loo then not ensure it had flushed as more than once I was confronted with a toilet bowl full of floating poo. Yuk!

Duckingella · 11/11/2024 02:05

I've never understood the judgement that comes with people shitting in public loo's;it's what a toilet is there for.

However unless there's a medical reason for it eg illness,a bowel condition etc then there's no need to be on the loo for ages shitting;I've never understood these men that take age in the toilet;I think they must sit there and wait for the shit to just fall out.

And for those who have a bowel condition you have my sympathy;I have IBD and when it's flaring up it's the absolute pits.

Same. I’d forgotten all about it…

Persianpaws · 11/11/2024 02:54

I totally understand the poo shame but it’s far worse for you than just going and not making a big deal.

I worked in a place where the toilets were off the staff kitchen, it upset me so much I even made a thread about it in a different name. I found it impossible to go when people were eating and there was no privacy and you could hear everything, I managed to avoid it most of the time but did mixed shifts so my body couldn’t get used to a schedule.

I stupidly started holding it in and taking loperamide and even not eating when working 12 hour shifts. After 3 weeks of basically holding it in I woke up in agony with the worst stomach cramps ever! I even had to go to hospital because I was stupid enough to not link the stomach cramps to the fact I was to embarrassed to poo because it was such a terrible environment, I was told I was lucky I hadn’t kept it up for longer or I’d have ended up with permanently damaged bowels.

Yes it’s embarrassing for some people, some people have such a negative reaction if they find out you have pooed or need to use their toilet that it doesn’t help. There is a huge stigma but we need to end the poo shame because I’m sure I’m not the only one who has preferred to be uncomfortable or in pain rather then use a toilet for what it’s meant for. As long as you clean up after yourself and don’t leave a big floater then it’s what the toilet is there for, it’s not an ornament.

We all poo, there is no shame and a lot of people have expressed envy for those who don’t have that “poo shame” I wish I was like my best friend who will happily go anywhere and thinks it’s crazy to “suffer the poo sweats” rather then just go.

I think it’s time for everyone to figuratively not give a shit! If anyone makes you feel uncomfortable it’s their issue.

I don't know about this thread but I was told a story about a girl on a 'meet the parents' of her boyfriend visit. They were very well to do and had a very large house. During dinner she needed to go to the loo, for a pee only (which is just as well in this case). She politely left the table and went off in search of the loo. She could only find a bathroom, but no toilet in it. Too embarassed to go back and ask, she hoisted herself up onto the sink to pee, knowing she'd wash the sink well before leaving.

The sink came away from the wall with an almighty crash and boyfriend and both parents found her injured on the floor, bare ass showing with knickers around her ankles. I hear they all had a good laugh about it and still dine out on it.

Boobygravy · 11/11/2024 03:58

As a dc dh had holidays at UK seaside resorts with the typical bed, breakfast and dinner set up. The bathroom was shared by the residents.
Apparently dmil would not poo all week, getting more and more uncomfortable and often the holiday would get cut short so dm could go home to use her own toilet!

Tell me you don't have IBS without telling me you don't have IBS.

MaidOfAle · 11/11/2024 04:09

It's a loo, it's designed to be pooed into. Just leave it clean and open the window.

Creasing myself laughing at the idea of ornamental loo brushes...

ohyesido · 11/11/2024 04:27

Freud wrote that toilet habits are ingrained from childhood toilet training, and adults either poop freely or hold it in forever depending on how the toilet training was managed. The latter group are anally retentive
