Do you turn your phone off or put it on silent when you go to sleep?

Izzabellasasperella · 10/11/2024 04:38

I assumed everyone does this when going to sleep.
I suffer from occasional insomnia so I replied to a text from a friend thinking they would see it in the morning or whenever.
I received a very shitty reply telling me off for texting so late.
It has upset me me due to the tone of the text.
This person has no kids or older parents where maybe they need to be contactable at anytime.
Obviously I will text tomorrow (at a reasonable time) and apologise.
I am curious though to know if anyone goes to sleep with their phone on?
I wouldn't sleep at all if mine was on and next to me due to the pointless notifications from WhatsApp/ Facebook etc 😀

I usually put mine in “Do Not Disturb” mode when l go to bed, but there have been times (for example, when a family member was ill in hospital) when, through choice, l’ve left it fully on overnight.

But l am aware that various people do things differently, so l never send Whatsapp or SMS messages if l think the person the other end is likely to be asleep.

I also check time zone differences if someone is overseas.

Futurethinking2026 · 11/11/2024 08:41

I have it on ‘sleep’ mode. This allows messages & calls from our parents and teen children to come through. It also allows calls if they ring more than once.

I would also assume people would have their phones on silent over night.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/11/2024 09:44

Any pings would disturb me, so my phone charges in the kitchen overnight. If I need an alarm, I use the old radio/alarm on the bedside table.

Zippedydodah · 11/11/2024 09:59

Mine’s completely turned off unless I am waiting for a particular call.
That does seem odd, someone getting arsey - surely if they don’t want to get disturbed then they know what to do!

anonny55 · 11/11/2024 09:59

Do not disturb for me. Set it So DH can contact me still though (he works nights)

AgileGreenSeal · 11/11/2024 10:02

I use mine to listen to David Suchet reading the Bible at night (YouTube) as I have chronic insomnia and it helps me get through the night. So I keep mine on.

Also, as my mother is very elderly and needy I wouldn’t want her not to be able to get me during the night, so I’m open to receiving texts at any time.

Beezknees · 11/11/2024 10:05

I keep it on but on "sleep" mode

SquigglePigs · 11/11/2024 10:07

Mine is on Do Not Disturb. This means notifications are silent but if the same person calls twice in 15 mins the second call is put through. My DH and my parents know this (only people likely to call with an emergency in the middle of the night).

I think this is the problem, a lot of people still don’t know what to do. What is an obvious matter to one, can be s technological minefield to others.

And before anyone comes back, it’s obvious to me.

nocoolnamesleft · 11/11/2024 10:15

I can't leave it on silent when I'm oncall for work...

Changeyourfuckingcar · 11/11/2024 10:18

It goes on ‘do not disturb’ automatically at 10:30pm and that turns off again at 7:00am. I have my husband, my mum and my MIL as exceptions to that, just in case, but no one else.
I probably wouldn’t message people in the middle of the night, it is a bit antisocial, but I don’t think it’s the end of the world.

buffyspikefaith · 11/11/2024 10:18

Mine lets calls through at night but no other notifications
If it's urgent, they'll call

DelphiniumBlue · 11/11/2024 10:22

No, mine stays on all the time. I have an elderly Mum and 3 DC living away from home, and want to remain contactable.
I wouldn't normally text .people after about 11 ( my friends are mainly night birds) or earlier for a couple of people who I know go to bed early. I do email whenever I feel like it

Its not about knowing what to do - its about whether or not you need to be able to receive emergency calls.

I would need a mechanism which would magically distinguish the diverse range of numbers calling in an emergency involving a relative or work from spam calls trying to flog phone upgrades in the middle of the night.

This is exactly my point. You can set a phone to accept calls from certain numbers.

And my point is you can only do that if you know which numbers will call you in an emergency.

The reality is - we don't know which number will call us to alert of an emergency. Hence the need for the phone being on until said magic device appears.

As I said earlier in the thread, I've had three emergency calls about relatives, and not one of them came from a number I'd have saved, or even known.

On two occasions the call was from neighbours (my MIL's on one occasions, my elderly aunt's on another) and my mum's ex man friend on the third. All the were true emergencies. One massive stroke, one car accident (in ICU) and MIL with dementia picked up by the police, wandering in the early hours of the morning, and taken to hospital by them. Thank goodness I was reachable in every case.

Yes this is exactly my experience. I don't recall any emergency calls in the night about a family member/close friend from a familiar number. Random paramedics/medical staff, police, random neighbours who were passing in the case of one accident but never a "Family and Friends number".

Its similar for work emergencies although I don't take many of those these days.

Every time this subject generates another thread its easy to see who has received emergency calls and who hasn't.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 11/11/2024 11:07

Mine is in DND and allows calls from my parents and children

I think many people don't think that way because they've never had an emergency call in the middle of the night.

It wasn't until my cat was at the emergency vets did I think that their call wouldn't get through as I have it on DND and it would be a number that isn't in my phone or on my list of exceptions.

But the thread isn’t about spam calls, it’s about sending messages or texts. Lots of people have said they let calls through and turn off other notifications.

ItsLovelyWeatherForDucks · 11/11/2024 11:24

No. But then I leave it in the lounge and wouldn't hear it from the bedroom anyway.

Pumpkinsandchutney · 11/11/2024 11:35

I used to leave it on (charging) overnight just incase DM had a medical emergency, but SM notifications used to wake me up. After DM died I switched to DoNotDisturb setting between 11.30pm and 6.30am. Now only DHs snoring wakes me!

I had emergency messages by text about DM from one hospital. Don't ask me why but I do know its a waste of time trying to change this. I've also had work systems which text rather than call.

Email can be turned off for sure, but calls and texts are both used IME.

Twangy · 11/11/2024 12:09

Mine is on silent permanently and it never goes to bed with me.
