Do you turn your phone off or put it on silent when you go to sleep?

I assumed everyone does this when going to sleep.
I suffer from occasional insomnia so I replied to a text from a friend thinking they would see it in the morning or whenever.
I received a very shitty reply telling me off for texting so late.
It has upset me me due to the tone of the text.
This person has no kids or older parents where maybe they need to be contactable at anytime.
Obviously I will text tomorrow (at a reasonable time) and apologise.
I am curious though to know if anyone goes to sleep with their phone on?
I wouldn't sleep at all if mine was on and next to me due to the pointless notifications from WhatsApp/ Facebook etc 😀

My phone is charging downstairs in the kitchen at night so it’s irrelevant!

Redglitter · 10/11/2024 04:47

I put mine on Do not disturb. That way I dont hear notifications etc but have it set so my 'important people' can still get through

I wouldn't message anyone during the night incase I disturbed them. If I remember something late I'll send a schedule a text to be sent at a reasonable time. I do that quite a lot because I work shifts so I'm out of kilter with everyone else

This yeah, sleep focus. Not sure if you can do an android phones.

RickiRaccoon · 10/11/2024 07:38

Someone complained about this when I sent a FB message. I assumed everyone was tech savvy enough to set their notifications to silent but apparently not.

Also I think I'd also rage if someone text me at stupid o'clock. My WhatsApp is set to silent but texts would wake me. It's just common courtesy not to text through the night.

but some of us have family abroad

dudsville · 10/11/2024 07:40

My phone is always on, but always on silent (and my alarms work fine!). I think your friends response was rude, her phone, her rules, and her consequences. That said, I also would not message at not because I'm old and remember the old rules of curtesy.

PonkyPonky · 10/11/2024 07:41

My phone is permanently on silent but I have it set so that if the school or elderly parents call, it overrides the silent settings. So I would know of any emergencies. Anything else can wait until I look at my phone.

Why would anyone keep their mobile switched on overnight unless they were away from home? I guess if you don’t have a landline perhaps. I always turn mine off.

In case a family member dies hth

WillowTit · 10/11/2024 07:44

why is this an argument
people do what they want in these circumstances.
sorry i just reread op

you were obviously wrong to text
we are not all the same

Can you really not think of any reasons why someone might need to be contactable on a mobile phone in case of emergency?

DustyLee123 · 10/11/2024 07:48

I leave mine downstairs. We still have a land line so anyone who really wants me can get me on that.

There’s always the landline. I know I can be contacted on that.

ManchesterLu · 10/11/2024 07:49

It's up to the individual to set their phone so that they're not disturbed at night. The settings are available to do that, it's completely up to them.

I have mine on silent, but I have my main contacts on permanent emergency bypass, so no matter when they call, it comes through on loud.

Do you actually realise how few people still have a landline??????

Werp · 10/11/2024 07:54

Yeah i think the onus is on people to mute their phone (and set it up so particular people can get through if needed - or get a £10 dumb phone to keep on loud for that if they’re technologically impaired). With nost people in whatsapp groups, having relatives and friends in different time zones, notifications for various messenger programmes and email as well as texts, and easy settings for muting it’s the norm to expect asynchronous communication technology to be used asynchronously.

Daisy12Maisie · 10/11/2024 07:55

My texts are silent but my phone would ring if someone called me. This is because I'm a shift worker so have lots of friends that might text at odd times. No issue as I'll reply whenever. Friends etc wouldn't ring me in the middle of the night but my teenagers have been told to ring me if they/ their friends get stuck or they need help in the night. Also my mum is getting older so I would need her to be able to call if an emergency and she fell or anything.
I don't think you should text people in the night as some people do have their texts on loud. I think it's really odd but not worth risking it if you don't know.
Other than text and say sorry I assumed it would be on silent there isn't much else you can do

Thesilkinsideachesnutshell · 10/11/2024 07:56

I don't have a landline.

My phone is always on silent, always has been since I got one in 1998!

I prefer to check it than have it constantly notify me. A smart watch would drive me mad!

I don't really worry about bad things happening in the 7.5 hours I'm asleep. I'm not a 'but what if' person. I'm aware something could happen but it's just not who I am.

(Obviously if I am told the doctor will call etc then I put the sound on while I wait!)

Nannyfannybanny · 10/11/2024 07:59

It's left in the conservatory overnight. When I used to stay at my DDs house (catching up after night shifts,in her double bed with her) her phone vibrating or the screen lighting up would wake me up. After 30 years nights, am a very light sleeper, and she was a store manager. When I retired, night shift friends would text or ring at stupid o clock,so I got into the habit of putting it away after 10, unless I am actually texting someone.

coffeesaveslives · 10/11/2024 08:00

@TheMoonismadeofcheese we haven't had a landline for the best part of a decade.

And surely even if you do have one, you can understand why people might need to be contactable via their mobiles sometimes?

PolaroidPrincess · 10/11/2024 08:03

On silent but important people can get through.

Jfdomega · 10/11/2024 08:07

I was going to say exactly the same thing! lol.

Wallywobbles · 10/11/2024 08:12

I have it on silent all the time. Drives my kids mad! Which pleases me no end.

Oblomov24 · 10/11/2024 08:14

She is irritating to complain about something she chose to do. I have to have my phone within 6 ft at all times for diabetes apps which is a pain. I have it on silent almost all the time.

WillowTit · 10/11/2024 08:17

she is not irritating imo
why assume that everyone has their phone on silent just because You do?
