Do you turn your phone off or put it on silent when you go to sleep?

I assumed everyone does this when going to sleep.
I suffer from occasional insomnia so I replied to a text from a friend thinking they would see it in the morning or whenever.
I received a very shitty reply telling me off for texting so late.
It has upset me me due to the tone of the text.
This person has no kids or older parents where maybe they need to be contactable at anytime.
Obviously I will text tomorrow (at a reasonable time) and apologise.
I am curious though to know if anyone goes to sleep with their phone on?
I wouldn't sleep at all if mine was on and next to me due to the pointless notifications from WhatsApp/ Facebook etc 😀

Has no one heard of do not disturb?! If they call twice they ring with a noise on the second time. Everything else goes silent. You can even set it to kick in an automatic time

MferMonsterSearchingForRedemption · 10/11/2024 08:19

Mine is usually on silent all the time. It's currently on full volume 24/7 due to my husband being in hospital and wanting to hear any messages or calls that I may receive- I'm looking forward to having it back on silent soon.

Catsmere · 10/11/2024 08:21

I turn mine off at night to save battery. In the very unlikely event someone rang me about an emergency at night I wouldn't be able to do anything about it anyway, so there's no point having it on.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/11/2024 08:21

I put mine on do not disturb, except for my best friend, who is always welcome to wake me!

WhatNoRaisins · 10/11/2024 08:24

I'm not even particularly tech savvy and I've worked out how to set up the do not disturb. I thought this was just a normal thing that most people did at night.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 10/11/2024 08:31

Why would you message someone in the middle of the night? I'd understand if you had been out or there was some emergency but just to randomly message someone at that time because you are awake is not very considerate. But then I don't message anyone after 10 at night usually as I'm in bed.

Also just because they don't have elderly parents or children doesn't mean they don't need their phone on for a reason. I have my phone on Do not Disturb with the exception of a few numbers, but the time the cat was dying and at the vet I took it off do not disturb so if they needed to call me it would ring.

Sassybooklover · 10/11/2024 08:34

My phone is turned off at night.

Maddy70 · 10/11/2024 08:36

Mine is on vibrate at night

Why would you consider messaging that late at night? Nothing is that important

Op literally explained in her op - she was awake, sent a message while it was fresh in her mind and didn't expect her friend to pick the message up until the morning.

This is on her friend for not sorting out her settings.

It's not like she went round and banged on her friend's door in the middle of the night or shouted the message through her letterbox.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 10/11/2024 08:47

My phone is always on silent day or night but I don't take it to bed with me anyway. I just leave it wherever it is - kitchen, handbag, coat pocket and will have a look at it when I get up (no messagesso far today!)

saraclara · 10/11/2024 08:49

Mine is on all the time. The only time I've had an emergency call about my family, it came from the police, not a family number that I'd have set to bypass do not disturb.

I'd rather have the very occasional ping in the night, then miss an emergency call.

Justleaveitblankthen · 10/11/2024 08:55

Good question.

I used to always switch it off, but then realised it would take too long to fire up and phone for help in an emergency, so now I switch to both airplane mode (saves battery) and Do not disturb every night.

WillowTit · 10/11/2024 08:57

well her friend obviously doesnt have it on DND
the onus is not on the friend imo
it is on the op who sent the random message.

No. Its on the op to be considerate. Its exactly like shouting through her letterbox

I am an insomniac. I spend half my nights scrolling on my phone. But never send messages to people during that time

IrisApfel · 10/11/2024 09:10

I wouldn't text anyone in the middle of the night unless it was necessary regardless of whether I have my phone on DND.

I am surprised there is no function that allows you to delay sending a message until X time. Perhaps there is and I just don't know about it or will someone now get rich from my amazing ideas 🤨

Not everyone would call though, or think to call a second time.

Lulu1919 · 10/11/2024 09:11

I turn the WiFi off but it's next to me as I use it as my alarm

NeedWineNow · 10/11/2024 09:12

Both mine and DH’s are on overnight, but DH’s is tucked in the drawer of his bedside table and I leave mine on the dressing table which is in the spare room next to ours. Same as a previous poster, my mum is elderly and on her own and she knows she can call either one of us at any time.

Finnished · 10/11/2024 09:19

DND, repeat callers or certain numbers can still get through. I don't text too late though, unless it's a good reason.

WhitePhantom · 10/11/2024 09:19

I find it bizarre that more people don't use Do Not Disturb. Completely silent phone except for the notifications you CHOOSE to show through! What's not to love about it? And so easy to set up.

Mine automatically kicks in at 23:00 every night and cuts out again at 8:00 every morning. Family calls can come through, but nothing else will. Perfect!

Plora · 10/11/2024 09:19

Mine is on dnd, I get messages in the middle of the night, I send them, some of the group chats I’m on have people on night shift or living abroad in different time zones, messages are asynchronous and there’s enough settings on phones to sort herself out so she’s not getting disturbed.

WhitePhantom · 10/11/2024 09:21

Surely on airplane mode nothing at all can come through - no emergency calls from family, etc - making dnd completely redundant? Or am I mistaken?

itispersonal · 10/11/2024 09:23

Mine is on do not disturb but allows phone calls.

I don't think I would personally send a message when awake in the middle of the night unless I could see the person was awake from last time online etc. I do wish WhatsApp would allow for delayed messages being sent as that would make life so much easier

SquatWeightaMinute · 10/11/2024 09:23

Mine is on Do Not Disturb from 9pm to 7am with my DC and DH as exceptions. Ds is away at uni so I need to be contactable.

sunshineandshowers40 · 10/11/2024 09:24

My phone is always on silent. I try not to reply to messages before 7am and after 10pm although will send emails at anytime.
