Do you turn your phone off or put it on silent when you go to sleep?

I assumed everyone does this when going to sleep.
I suffer from occasional insomnia so I replied to a text from a friend thinking they would see it in the morning or whenever.
I received a very shitty reply telling me off for texting so late.
It has upset me me due to the tone of the text.
This person has no kids or older parents where maybe they need to be contactable at anytime.
Obviously I will text tomorrow (at a reasonable time) and apologise.
I am curious though to know if anyone goes to sleep with their phone on?
I wouldn't sleep at all if mine was on and next to me due to the pointless notifications from WhatsApp/ Facebook etc 😀

It's on silent most of the time. If I was worried about someone, then I would use do not disturb/permitted callers or whatever it's called. It's definitely the responsibility of the phone owner to manage though.

brightpompoms · 10/11/2024 07:06

Silent always day and night

But set a few contacts as breakthrough ones.

Destiny123 · 10/11/2024 07:09

Phones never on loud as flip nights days so often. Similar for mates drs often reply to each other on quiet moments in the night

Bubblebuttress · 10/11/2024 07:09

Don’t have the phone in the bedroom. If kids or hubbie are out they can call Alexa in the room.

GameOfJones · 10/11/2024 07:12

Like others I have it set to do not disturb....between 11pm and 7am but so phone calls can get through. If something was urgent, as had unfortunately happened to me before I would get a call but I don't want to be disturbed by messages and notifications. My brother lives in Australia so always messages in what is the middle of the night for me.

SkankingWombat · 10/11/2024 07:12

Mine is on DND 11pm-7am with exceptions for immediate family and the setting that anyone calling several times in a short space of time makes it ring.
I try to avoid sending things at unsociable times in case the other person is crazy enough to not use DND (I've also had people moan at me in the past), but find it annoying as I believe that emails and messages should be sent when convenient to the sender, and read and replied to when convenient to the recipient. Modern phones have settings to stream the important notifications, so why wouldn't you use them? If you choose not to, you really shouldn't be upset with the sender if a random message wakes you up.

needhelpwiththisplease · 10/11/2024 07:14

Mine is off and downstairs from 10 pm every night.

Just have notifications on silent all the time, which is what most people do, particularly if they're in lots of different groups.

WillowTit · 10/11/2024 07:16

no i dont
i use my phone as an alarm
and anyway, when i go to bed at night i dont have time to faff around
i mainly sleep through texts, and my dd has learned to email me so i see the message in the morning.

sinckersnack · 10/11/2024 07:21

Always on and I sleep with it on the pillow or on the table next to the bed. Anyone can call me any time. Notifications from a group are off but if anyone needed me they could call or text and I'd answer.

Eh? Phone being on silent has nothing to do with your alarm working or not. I've never had my phone on loud ever, have many loud alarms throughout the day/night

Mill3nnial · 10/11/2024 07:27

I put mine on silent too but I'd probably find it odd if you texted me in the early hours unless I knew this was a thing you did

i sometimes sent texts at unsociable hours when I had a newborn but only to other mums who understood and would also text when they were awake too

CrazyCatLady008 · 10/11/2024 07:27

Nope. I haven't slept with my phone on silent in 19 months since my son was diagnosed with type one diabetes.

I was woken a total of 13 times through the night by my sons Dexcom alarms wrongly going off telling me he was having a hypo when he wasn't. (Takes 24 hours to calibrate properly) 😬😖

WorriedMillie · 10/11/2024 07:28

Mine is on silent, as all dependents (and my mum) live here. It might be different if they didn’t
I don’t message people after 9.30ish though, just in case.

i knew someone would disagree

CrazyCatLady008 · 10/11/2024 07:28

Also I think I'd also rage if someone text me at stupid o'clock. My WhatsApp is set to silent but texts would wake me. It's just common courtesy not to text through the night.

lasagnelle · 10/11/2024 07:29

"Do Not Disturb" with a special setting that means if someone phones me twice in quick succession it will get through.

Ah yes! Late night mum messages! Got me through lockdown tbh

soberfabulous · 10/11/2024 07:31

My phone is on silent 24 hours a day! And all notifications have been turned off for years.

ThePoshUns · 10/11/2024 07:33

Mine is on 'Do not disturb' at night.
I wouldn't send a text at night unless urgent in case the recipient doesn't have theirs on silent, they may be waiting on an urgent message from someone etc;
I would send an email or what's app as most people ( well me) don't have alerts on for those anyway.

retersa · 10/11/2024 07:33

I have mine on silent most of the day and night, and I have all Whatsapp notifications on mute. But I just don't like being disturbed when I'm awake. If I forgot to put it on silent when I go to bed, it wouldn't disturb me. I'd either not wake up or be able to ignore it.

I don't tend to send texts later than about 8.30pm though, because I know people generally consider it to be late. Except my DS, who is a night owl.

coffeesaveslives · 10/11/2024 07:34

Mine's on silent but I wouldn't ever text anyone after about 11pm or before 8am as I just think it's a bit rude.

The only exception is if it's WhatsApp or Messenger and I can see they're online or not.

Frith2013 · 10/11/2024 07:36

Oh it that possible on an iPhone? Will it work with withheld numbers?

TheMoonismadeofcheese · 10/11/2024 07:37

Why would anyone keep their mobile switched on overnight unless they were away from home? I guess if you don’t have a landline perhaps. I always turn mine off.
