Lot of snow in Washington DC today - is the planet trying to stop the electoral college confirmation taking place 😜

AcrossthePond55 · 06/01/2025 14:54

@CaveMum

Certainly wish it would! But DC people are used to snow so unfortunately no such luck.

DH and I plan to spend the day watching anything other than network TV so there is no 'Breaking News!' to interrupt the peace of our day to cover the vote or let us know it's a done deal. There will be no surprises, Joe won't make a speech calling for an insurrection a 'march on the Capitol' ("It will be wild!!"). We will see once again that the Proud Boys and their ilk, and not Antifa, are the real terrorists. Things will proceed as they did before 2020. A calm quiet vote, an election certified.

If the above sounds like sad resignation, that's because it is. We have 4 years of hell to get through. I'm trying to ration my emotions (funny/not funny).

Wallaw · 06/01/2025 17:47

@AcrossthePond55

I'm trying to ration my emotions (funny/not funny).

I was listening to a podcast the other day where they were talking about this and the importance of 'only caring about the things you care about'. As in, don't waste emotional energy going crazy about every little piece of garbage they spew - save it for the things that matter to you.

Trying very hard to adopt that philosophy. Sigh.

Hopefully they will continue to eat each other's faces off.

Will be interesting to see if Trump really is "in charge" and whether he's willing to scorn Musk if the time comes.

There was a story a few weeks ago about Trump "joking" that he couldn't get rid of Musk. The reporter said that Trump has a long history of saying the quiet bit out loud.

How different Jan 6th might have been 4years ago if the weather had been as severe as it is today in D.C.

@AcrossthePond55 I feel your pain, it's going to be a long four years.

I don't expect there will be much actual impact on me as a middle class white woman in a blue state, but I will fight like hell to protect those that need it. Bloody hell, I feel tired already.

Having said that, I am also choosing to aggressively seek out joy and not allow this bunch of degenerates to ruin our lives - although how possible that will be I don't know.

AcrossthePond55 · 06/01/2025 22:14

"I don't expect there will be much actual impact on me as a middle class white woman in a blue state"

I agree, and we can add in 'retired and post menopausal' for me. DH and I were discussing pretty much that same thing, that since we're in a blue state our day to day lives probably won't change much. Thank God for strong Governors & State Legislatures. We figure the main impact for us might be if there's a steep increase in fuel prices it might affect where we RV.

But yes, we have to remember the people and especially younger women who might be so badly impacted by whatever the proponents of Project 2025 manage to get away with.

Yes, my fear is for my children. The healthcare landscape (both in terms of affordable care and the rollback of science), climate change, fear for their friends who are lgbt and (I'm afraid to say it on MN) trans. No hope of any meaningful gun control. My kids are very fortunate in that they're white and straight and we've been very lucky, so they're getting great educations and will be able to afford to buy houses wherever they land, but almost none of their friends will be in that position.

I read something a few weeks ago that Harvard Law School admitted 19 black first-years this year, down from 40(something) last year, now that affirmative action has been struck down by the court. This plus Dobbs just feels like we're going backwards so rapidly.

And, honestly, with the right becoming so extreme, and so proficient at disinformation, I'm not sure I see the political landscape changing any time soon.

As you can see, I'm really fun at parties right now 😊

Spandauer · 06/01/2025 23:21

I'm also worried about the futures of the younger generation in DH's US family and have also advised my DC that if they or their partners think that there's any chance they may be pregnant then they shouldn't plan any trips to the US. 😔

I'm honestly worried about the next 4 years of the Trump administration but when he became the GOP candidate for the 2nd time I never thought all this bonkers stuff would be part of the result.

I'm worried about 2 possible pandemics currently brewing (bird flu and hmpv) with the orange one in charge.
especially with his history around the last pandemic.

prettybird · 07/01/2025 13:50

We're off to Australia in March on the "last big family holiday" - delayed since Covid when I'd literally had the flights on hold Shock - more expensive now as we're also paying for ds' girlfriend (of 3 years) Hmm - so please any pandemic that is brewing, hold off until at least April Wink

Talkinpeace · 07/01/2025 15:05

I should go to the US to see some older family members but really do not fancy it at the moment.

prettybird · 07/01/2025 15:30

The US is off our travel plans for at least Hmm the next 4 years Sad This despite the fact that we're now able to travel a lot more - and are looking forward to doing so.

Jr orange is visiting Greenland and senior is planning the invasion.

Not sure if that one is before or after the UK has been liberated.

BustingBaoBun · 07/01/2025 17:07

He is channelling Boris Johnson's hair. That about all that is relevant.

JoshLymanSwagger · 07/01/2025 17:41

I might be hallucinating, but I'm pretty sure I just heard the newsreader say Trump is planning on changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.🤣

goingtohellinahandcart · 07/01/2025 18:25

Well they can start calling it the Gulf of America, doesn't mean we have acknowledge the name change and it would be a good way of winding trump up!🤣
