Kamala supporters/ democrats: why do you think you've lost?

TERFCat · 06/11/2024 09:56

From reading Twitter, the rhetoric on the left seems to be that they've lost because Trump voters are stupid, racist, sexist etc etc.

Personally, I think that the conversation needs far more nuance than name calling.

I'm left wing but can't vote for anyone who will allow men into women's safe spaces or will sterilize autistic/ gay children. If this makes me "thick" or "fascist", then so be it, but those names won't change my vote.

Trump's behaviour during his campaign has been extremely bizarre at times. He's rambled, displayed confusion, stumbled around, and been incoherent. That's on top of his usual mad lies and wild claims that are clearly just bollocks.

At this point, I don't think there's anything he could do that could put off his legion of ardent fans. He's been convicted of sexual assault, has further felony charges pending, incited a riot where people were killed, and tried to undermine democracy by refusing to accept the results of the last election. The man is absolutely insane.

So the question is, why are people still voting for a complete fucking loon rather than Kamala Harris who seems a pretty decent person, even if I don't agree with her on everything?

There's not one single answer:

a) The USA has struggled since COVID and inflation has risen - rightly or wrongly, the public blames Biden and the Democrats
b) Because of a), the Democrat approval rate is very low and people don't want to re-elect the same government they believe are to blame for their financial woes
c) Kamala Harris is closely tied to Biden as his VP, therefore she's perceived as being part of the current problems
d) People believe that Kamala lied deliberately about Biden's health and therefore can't be trusted (but Trump is definitely TOTALLY trustworthy....)
e) Some people will always vote Republican
f) Some people find Kamala's views on women's rights extremely problematic and believe that women will be put in real danger by the loss of their identity and single sex spaces
g) Connected to f) - people are unhappy about gender ideology being pushed at school with no way of removing parental consent
h) Kamala is black
i) Kamala is a woman
k) Trump is an racist xenophobe and this strikes a chord with people who hold similar views
l) People believe Trump's bollocks about being victimised and think he's some kind of people's champion
m) People think that Trump did a good job last time and will be able to do exactly the same again
n) People think that Trump can magically stop wars overnight with his Big Man energy
o) Some people just really like Trump and believe whatever he says because he's charismatic
p) People struggle to connect with Kamala and can't identify with her core messages
q) Kamala didn't do a good enough job of highlighting Trump's flaws
r) Biden should have resigned earlier and allowed the new candidate longer to campaign
s) The Democrats prioritised Kamala's feelings rather than thinking what type of candidate they needed to beat Trump
t) More of the public could identify with Trump's messages and felt he is one of them (despite his millions in the bank)

Either one or a combination of some of the above will probably apply to most Trump voters.

I am extremely gender critical and I'm not happy at all about the Democrats approach to gender ideology. I think it's regressive and harmful. However, I still think that the Democrats would have been less of a threat to women and women's health than Trump.

I sympathise with those who felt they had no one to vote for. Many of us felt the same in the UK with the recent general election.

The fact is, there is a hardcore of Trump supporters who are deeply unpleasant people, and spout really unpleasant views. And because he is similarly unpleasant, it's extremely easy to assume they're all like that. It's also really hard to understand how anyone could ignore the fact that he's corrupt to the core, and a very dangerous man. So it's often just easier to dismiss his supporters as crazy bigots rather than consider the wider picture which is often more complex.

I found this a really useful and balanced summary. Thank you @SpidersAreShitheads

What a stupid reason not to vote for someone.
This is why he won. People are so bloody stupid.
And I am so tired of hearing oh the name calling, thats why we didnt vote for her.
If you are a racist, mysogonistic pig then thats what you should be knows as.
Every single time. If you voted for that pig, then you have shown who you are. And I have no problem saying it.
OUT LOUD.

This is why he won🤣

Being deluded enough to believe that endorsements from people like Taylor Swift count in the ballot box.

My take - this reflects moves to the far right of politics across Europe and speaks to the fact that the less well off don’t believe / feel that they have a stake in society/ the economy which they see as benefitting only the better off. This explains the black/Hispanic/ non graduate swing towards Trump

The US economy is actually in a reasonably good state right now but if an individual doesn’t FEEL that, they are going to blame the incumbent. What they possibly don’t realise is that Trumps policies (to the extent he actually has any) will benefit the already better off and an isolationist trade policy will make inflation great again (see what I did there 😉) and make those poorer people even poorer.

MichaelandKirk · 06/11/2024 12:20

The name calling primarily from the left to excuse people who voted for Trump is the reason why they are stratching their heads wondering why he did!

Dont call people names when they dont vote the way you would. Understand what is important to your voters. Put your egos to one side. Trump (and Farage) do this well.

As I have said on another thread - imagine if Kemi gets together with Farage for the next election.

LineRunnerReturns · 06/11/2024 12:32

Does anyone think that Kamala Harris's 'pick' for running mate, Walz, was a factor?

They lost because they allowed an elderly man who was not up to the job to carry on in post unchecked. They lost because they realised this too late before they could take a measured decision about an election candidate.

I'd say the problem goes back further - the Dems haven't nurtured the next generation of Democrat candidates, and are insultingly relying on the electorate to vote for them because they are the Democrats.

The best they could field against Trump first time was an unpopular Clinton.

Then they fielded a safe-but-past-it Biden, but threw in a VP whom a lot of people thought would carry the load.

They had four years to showcase her - and every opportunity to do so, with Biden's frailty more apparent each time he appeared - but didn't. She wasn't even their first choice of presidential candidate this time - it took Clooney and a bunch of others to get them to let Biden step down.

Fielding Biden this time round was an insult to the electorate. Let's hope it is a wake-up call to the Democrats to get their act together for the 2028 election - if there is one.

You missed the bit where I Said I wonder never vote for him.

When you have to resort to insulting me rather than actually stating a coherent point you have already lost the argument

Doteycat · 06/11/2024 11:49

They prefer his Policies BECAUSE they are racist mysogonists.
Sigh.

And this is why the Left lost.

Because they fund it easier to resort to name calling and shaming and they are blinded by their sense of moral superiority so that they don’t think it’s necessary to look into the reasons people had for voting.

Trump had millions black and Hispanic voters. Are they all racist misogynists?

caringcarer · 06/11/2024 12:51

Starmer has no immigration policy. More people making risky channel crossing now than ever. The UK can't afford to put these people up in hotels whilst at the same time taking money off pensioners and now charging students more too. I agree the Conservatives were not much better. Reform would be tougher on illegal immigrants.

I wouldn't be surprised if Trump changes the landscape on this. The UK will be in bad shape with Starmer's smash the gangs stuff, he won't get anywhere and it will cost a fortune.

We might actually get some sort of idea on what to do by the next GE.

She lost because she ran a rubbish campaign and couldn't put a coherent sentence together without lapsing into "Californian". Middle east was a side-show, I reckon.

And Trump is so eloquent…

Really? I know that's what the Republicans said about her but really? Did you listen to her speeches (not going to even mention Tr*mps's rambling hate-filled wiffle)

Gallowayan · 06/11/2024 12:58

In the post truth world, it's the control of information, leveraged by big buisness and the rich which is the critical factor. News outlets are mainly controlled by the right in the US (just as they are in the UK) so the odds are always stacked against a left leaning party.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 06/11/2024 13:03

Most of the reasons listed here. Also Reagan hollowed out the American school system to lower property taxes and moved manufacturing overseas, and no leader has been fucked to fix either since then. Decreasing social mobility has made people hopeless which is also why they're turning to opiates/fentanyl.

Waggytail · 06/11/2024 13:04

Really interesting point made on the BBC breakfast coverage is that people lied about who they were going to vote for to their friends and families - young men in particular. Politics is now so polarised that it's as if people have hunkered down in their opinions and now discussions and sharing of opinions don't even happen.

StaunchMomma · 06/11/2024 13:06

I think it's a mixture of the Biden administration being ineffective and people expecting more of the same, rampant misinformation spread on SM, a deep toxicity and distrust of 'elites' running through the working classes, a smattering of racism & idiocy and a big old dose of America not being ready to put a woman in office.

It's incredibly depressing for women, for democracy and for common decency, I think. The man should be in jail.

The turkeys voting for Christmas springs to mind.

Pat888 · 06/11/2024 13:11

She’s Californian, female, black.
Also didn’t havre any great policies that I heard.

TheFlis · 06/11/2024 13:16

Exactly @StaunchMomma

Kamala supporters/ democrats: why do you think you've lost?
RobinEllacotStrike · 06/11/2024 13:16

its highlighted in the USA today, but leftwing political parties around the world are struggling to understand the impact of their choices to go all in on imposing gender ideology upon their citizens. Gender ideolodgy very clearly harms women, children and homosexuals.

when you lie about fundamentals, like pretending you can't tell the difference between a man & woman, or that differences are unimportant, and sex isn't a binary that is important and immutable, you will not be believed about anything by huge swathes of the population.

If you try and tell people 1+1=3, and 1+1=2 is a lie, everything else you say is tainted. And what the democrats have done with gender is exactly this. People have turned away.

Humans can't change sex. This is a truth which the Democrats have declared inconvenient amd a lie.

Democrats have beclowned themselves so badly they have created an open goal for the Orange Lunatic. Trump will have devotees I'm sure, but there are lots of ordinary Americans who would have voted democrat that didn't because the trust levels are so low. So low, they prefer Trump.

I don't feel like Trump won ths election - the Democrats lost badly & bigly. They spectaculary fucked up and they are totally in denial of all the ways they messed this up.

The only reason this didn't have a similar effect in UK with Labour winning in the UK, is the Tories had been in for so long, thought Brexit, Covid and all the finanicial stuff following those events, that it would have been almost impossible for them to win again. But unless this Labour Govt comes out strongly with sensible sex based rights protections and takes the gender bollocks out of NHS, Govt etc, they will feel this effect at the next election and lose.

I am/was on the left - I don't recognise it anymore. Its seems everyone is brainwashed and lying, and then wondering why they aren't trusted by voters.

ChillysWaterBottle · 06/11/2024 13:16

StarDolphins · 06/11/2024 12:19

This argument NEVER makes sense. Trump and the US right call their opponents and voters names and insult them all the time.

Pat888 · 06/11/2024 13:20

Also Trump is very strong on immigration - I remember reading years ago that a million immigrants entered the us each year.

Winterjoy · 06/11/2024 13:23

hattie43 · 06/11/2024 10:38

They lost because she simply didn't win hearts , minds and wallets . Her campaign wheeling out celebrities smacked of desperation. Yes she had the big teeth , the glamour the pizz zazz but no actual policies .
Obamas played a stronger campaign role than she did .

This. The party seem to have completely misread the room and missed that the age of the celebrity is over.

Average Joe is eating one meal a day so their kids can be fed properly, only heating one room etc. There is nothing aspirational or relatable about Beyonce with her 10 mansions, fleet of private jets and billions of $.

Strong leadership with realistic policies that will benefit the man on the street and help to improve life for everyone is what people want now.
