Kamala supporters/ democrats: why do you think you've lost?

TERFCat · 06/11/2024 09:56

From reading Twitter, the rhetoric on the left seems to be that they've lost because Trump voters are stupid, racist, sexist etc etc.

Personally, I think that the conversation needs far more nuance than name calling.

I'm left wing but can't vote for anyone who will allow men into women's safe spaces or will sterilize autistic/ gay children. If this makes me "thick" or "fascist", then so be it, but those names won't change my vote.

I am a Brit in the US, I became a US citizen in 2016 after Trump got in the first time. I voted independent this time around.

I think the biggest issue the Democrats have had is a complete lack of political debate. If you do not toe the Democrat line, you're instantly branded a fascist or a Nazi. Therefore, instead of airing political views, people just sit quietly and not along to preserve jobs and friendships, and wait until the privacy of the booting booth to air their views.

Evidently, according to the only intelligent ones on MN, it’s purely down to Harris being black so Trump has got in by default only. All those millions of voters are all unintelligent racists🙄

Couldn’t possibly down to the fact that some people preferred Trump (& his policies) to run their country.

They prefer his Policies BECAUSE they are racist mysogonists.
Sigh.

His policies on immigration perhaps?

Also I sort of feel that constantly saying the left hasn't done enough to listen/understand working class and lower income people is giving people a free pass to support someone who conforms to their deep seated racism and sexism.
Probably the same story here too.

how?

if you want the working class or minorities to vote for you - you have to talk to them. You have to listen to them. You have to offer something that attracts them to you over the other one. Trump waffles on about "sending them back" to a nation of people (working class, paycheque to paycheque people) who are worried that illegal immigrants are going to take their jobs. It matters not one jot if they are, that is the perception, and he has put it across very convincingly to people who don't really want to go into too much depth.

What did the Democrats offer these precariously employed or unemployed people?

etc etc

But i am BAFFLED, ASTOUNDED and SHOCKED by single issue voters purporting to have women's rights at heart when they say "but he will stop men taking part in women's sports so everything is fine and dandy"

And when it became clear that there are indeed people who were going to vote like that - WHERE were the Democrats? Faffing about. That's where.

BloominNora · 06/11/2024 11:49

Polarisation of politics across the board which is reflected in society.

For the right, there has been an increase in isolationist individualism rhetoric which is leading to breakdown of the societal safety net and women's rights. Despite this, as evidenced by the number of people in the republican party who speak out against Trump but fall into line in terms of votes, people who lean right will still vote with the party because they recognise that while they might not agree with some of the more extreme views, they agree with large parts of the platform - particularly in relation to economics and immigration. The right are very good at coalition building.

In contrast, the left are not good at coalition building (and never have been). There has been an increase in people who think that if you don't agree on one thing then you must be a fascist / sexist / racist / bigot, even if you agree on everything else. This has led to people on the left being much more likely to NOT vote for someone due to a single thing they disagree about as well as being very off putting for centrist / independent / swing voters - particularly the name calling for people who hold a different view point.

Political leaders on the left need to step away from identity politics and focus on pragmatic policy.

The president is the president of everyone, not just those that vote for them, and when you are running to lead a country that is as evenly split as America, politically, you need to be able to articulate policies that support and appeal to as many people as possible.

Voters on the left have to also start being a bit more pragmatic and accept that they are not going to get 100% of what they want and vote for people who share some / most of their values, get into power and then work to make changes needed to push towards what they do want. Principle based voting is fine in theory but you aren't going to get anything you want, let alone all of it, if the other guy gets in - as the left wing of America is about to discover!

DavidBeckhamsrightfoot · 06/11/2024 11:50

The left is loud but they do not listen

The same can be seen on MN.
But quiet actions speak louder.

SweetSakura · 06/11/2024 11:52

They've lost because people nitpicked over the small details rather than focussing on the risk of the alternative option winning. As your opening post illustrated.

she also lost because of corruption and manipulation

I didn’t vote so not sure what they preferred but given millions did, there’s clearly something!

No focus on policies and no focus on what people care about.
People care about their wallets, Trump focused on the economy, keeping jobs, protecting the US, immigration, and stop throwing money at Ukraine - instead sort out disaster areas in the US. He also rejected the insane trans push to remove women only spaces. They are not women. Trumps personality is not relevant to the every day man, the cost of groceries and womens safety is.

I agree
Americans of all races have a problem with money being sent to Ukraine. They resent the fact that the Ukrainian President is constantly ‘begging’ for financial and military support while the average American is in dire straits
Americans are generally insular and are not as concerned about what is happening globally. They don’t care or understand that the support for Ukraine is not for altruistic reasons but to prevent Russia’s influence
The fact that petrol prices and groceries have gone up is what bothers the average American
Many black christians hold very conservative views and had issues with trans issues .
The Democrats often take the black vote for granted as they often regard black voters as a monolith.

Weak policies, misogyny and a dose of racism is why the Democrats lost.

This, and because the economy is doing badly in the US. Rents are up over 35 percent since COVID. Fuel is up a lot and parents are struggling with putting food on the table for their kids. Harris has been part of the useless Biden administration and she was in charge of borders. She's as useless as Starmer on immigration.

How were the Conservative government on immigration? How is this Starmer's fault?

They have let more people in the country legally in the last 14 years than anyone ever has before, in spite of promising to "take back control".

dottiehens · 06/11/2024 11:55
  1. Overkill of Trump”s character assassination when calling him fascist and dangerous.
  2. The circus of the celebrities endorsement. Shallow, pathetic and detached from reality
  3. The alienation of Trump voters. People from all backgrounds were secretly voting for him so not just the uneducated red necks as they put it.
  4. Running a campaign based on not being Trump when the people in government were the democrats so it was their place to loose.
  5. The real pain on people pockets as things are very expensive and out of reach.
  6. Being two faces by calling Trump senile while inflicting Biden in a much worse state in 2020.
  7. Speculation of Trump being a dictator when he was in government before and did not stayed as a dictator. Also, the Capitol incident blown out of proportion and weaponised every time they were being questioned.

Mainly misogyny , racism and the fact that she ran a rubbish campaign .

Please define "rubbish." KH had a very short time to prepare and run the campaign. I think she did VERY well, especially convincing people within her own party that she was worth a shot.

She is accomplished and speaks very well despite her haters saying otherwise.

I think what hurt the campaign was not having a very wealyhy, white, old, equally vile criminal on the Democratic ticket. The kind of man southern white women seem to vote for and most men quietly aspire to be.

EasternStandard · 06/11/2024 12:00

Superficial celebrity stuff, looks like there's 'momentum' but it can give a false impression

Lack of polices re stuff more people cared about

Not great with delivering messages beyond 'joy' and what seemed to be laughing at a lot of stuff

These kind of hyperbolic statements are exactly why she lost.

You’re basically saying if you don’t vote Harris you’re racist and misogynistic. How do comments like that encourage swing voters to vote for her? It’s a ridiculous statement anyway given that these swing states voted for Obama twice.

I would never vote trump but If I was one of those swing voters who heard myself described like that I definitely wouldn’t vote for her either.

What a stupid reason not to vote for someone.
This is why he won. People are so bloody stupid.
And I am so tired of hearing oh the name calling, thats why we didnt vote for her.
If you are a racist, mysogonistic pig then thats what you should be knows as.
Every single time. If you voted for that pig, then you have shown who you are. And I have no problem saying it.
OUT LOUD.

I am saying that there are a variety of reasons why she lost . There is no doubt that racism and misogyny play a role. To say otherwise would be naive.
However, I also pointed out that she ran a rubbish campaign and in further posts I mentioned the fact that she had weak policies and failed to understand the needs of the American people.
All of this contributed to the loss of the election

Justcallmebebes · 06/11/2024 11:24

But that doesn't explain the largely black communities that voted Trump, plus the Hispanics and Muslim Arabs. You can't just scream that half the population is racist, thick and misogynistic

You can when they are.

MichaelandKirk · 06/11/2024 12:10

If it was really true that people didnt vote for her because she was a woman and black then why the HELL did the Democrats put her forward. It sounds like excuses excuses etc.

EsmaCannonball · 06/11/2024 12:14

Biden and then Harris put their own personal ambitions before the good of their country and the world. They should have listened to those who pointed out they were weak candidates and then stood aside so the Democrats could have held primaries and found a candidate with a good fighting chance.

The Democrats also need to remember that campus politics does not win votes. Everybody who isn't in antifa cares about the cost of living, crime, streets full of drug addicts, etc..

Honestly, it's despairing how badly they fumbled this.
