Kamala supporters/ democrats: why do you think you've lost?

TERFCat · 06/11/2024 09:56

From reading Twitter, the rhetoric on the left seems to be that they've lost because Trump voters are stupid, racist, sexist etc etc.

Personally, I think that the conversation needs far more nuance than name calling.

I'm left wing but can't vote for anyone who will allow men into women's safe spaces or will sterilize autistic/ gay children. If this makes me "thick" or "fascist", then so be it, but those names won't change my vote.

I think the next US administration is going to make life completely intolerable and very very dangerous for transgender people.

And the transphobes of mumsnet will revel in it.

What's dangerous about men not being allowed to enter female domains? Or men not being allowed to pretend to be women to gain an advantage in sport?
I see no danger.

There is much danger in letting people perpetuate the fiction that men can turn into women, or men into women.

Ignoring biology is dangerous! Children are harmed because of unnecessary surgery and hormones. That's where the danger lies.

EsmaCannonball · 06/11/2024 14:31

In recent weeks I kept seeing stories about how black men were voting for Trump because of machismo and white women were going to defy their husbands by not voting for him once they got into the voting booth. I couldn't help but think that both those ideas were coming from people who have very outdated ideas about how black men and white women live their lives.

Agree with this. At the end of the day, most Trump voters are probably not the racist, misogynistic idiots that the left likes to portray them as, they are just looking out for themselves and their families and think that overall he will boost the economy, provide better job stability etc. I vote almost exclusively on that basis in the UK - I can't stand Farage but if at the next election it looks like he has a better chance at overturning Labour he'll get my vote as I'd rather vote for a racist over a party that is trashing the economy, raising taxes, failing to control public spending and allowing unfettered illegal immigration. I'm a highly paid professional with a PhD not some brainwashed idiot. I care about women's rights but not as much as I care about my own family's financial situation. If those on the left want to cry that that makes me a selfish racist then so be it, but it doesn't change how I would vote and I expect the same applied to a lot of Americans last night.

"most Trump voters are probably not the racist, misogynistic idiots that the left likes to portray them as"

1 in 5 Republican voters believe the Q-anon conspiracy about Democrats being satan worshipping pedophiles and that Hillary Clinton drinks the blood of infants.

A vast number are full on Christian Nationalists who believe that women should always be subordinate to men within their household.

84% of Republicans think that racial progress in the USA has 'gone far enough/gone too far', and 3/4 of Republicans think people see discrimination where none exists. And that's while over half of African Americans think that racism has impacted on their ability to get ahead in life.

Maybe you should read a bit more social research.

Trump is a racist, a misogynist and a fascist. Many people love him for this, not in spite of it, just like they've done with other popular far right leaders over the past century.

"What's dangerous about men not being allowed to enter female domains? Or men not being allowed to pretend to be women to gain an advantage in sport?
I see no danger."

20% of US citizens defining as transgender are under 18 and incidence of youth transgender identification is rising. The growth rate appears to be in the incidence of young females defining as transmen or non-binary. These are often vulnerable young people, likely to be less well educated than their peers and to be in lower paid jobs. Closing down access to care via punitive legislation endangers them, by shutting them out of healthcare (even that which is not related to gender care), careers (the exclusion of trans people from the US military for example) and potentially access to support. Whatever their gender identity, they are biological females in danger, I'm not sure that's anything to cheer over.....

Well said @TheShellBeach I certainly do want a male in my female only space. I'm not having my comfort levels compromised by a male believing he is female. Nor do I want males participating in my female only teams. It's my right & perogative as a female to have my spaces protected.

izimbra · 06/11/2024 14:47

"In recent weeks I kept seeing stories about how black men were voting for Trump because of machismo"

How do you explain the extremely gendered nature of voting in this election?

Black women overwhelmingly voted Democrat in both 2020 and 2024. White men overwhelmingly voted Republican in both 2020 and 2024.

What do you think it is that makes Trump so appealing to white male voters?

ChocWrapper · 06/11/2024 14:49

A combination of things- mainly the economy (inflation) and a perception that Harris was just a continuation at a time when people want change. They would have had a better chance if Biden had stood aside earlier meaning a proper process could have been followed to find a new candidate.

Ongoing tendencies on the left to dismiss Republican voters as racist/ignorant etc don’t help.

Have you ever had your 'comfort levels compromised' by a transwoman in the same space as you?

Has anyone you know?

Or is this a deeply help but completely hypothetical fixation, because you've never actually knowingly met a transwoman, let alone shared a female space with one.

GreenSedan · 06/11/2024 14:52

I have. Both times in a public toilet in my local shopping centre. And both times I was scared to say anything in case I was punched in the face. So piss off with your 'this never happens' bullshit.

TheFlis · 06/11/2024 10:42

I have spent enough time in the southern US to know that a scary amount of people there, including young intelligent, educated women, will never vote for someone who is not white.

Obama?

Why does it matter to you? My opinion won't be swayed. As a female my comfort levels & my personal space is of my upmost importance. I won't compromise my safe spaces & I am really happy that there is so much pushback on behalf of all females.
As a biological woman I am absolutely delighted to have Kemi, Trump, Vance, Musk & the Republicans all on the same hymn sheet regarding female sports, safe spaces, toilets & prisons.

But fuck any female who requires reproductive health care?

MichaelandKirk · 06/11/2024 15:00

Why do people keep bleating Obama? She hasnt given any indication she wants to do it or why she didnt throw her hat in the ring years ago.

Maybe she just doesnt want to (or feels she would lose?).

I find her a reasonable public speaker but more of the do as I say not what I do but we probably wont ever know because she doesnt want to run...

HRTQueen · 06/11/2024 15:00

Joe Biden took too long to step down and Kamal Harris had her work cut out at people getting to know her they couldn't connect with her

The campaign didn't address the economy enough and inflation in the US for those on average and lower than average wages is crippling many

Trump isn't intelligent, he isn't a great businessman but what he is great at is being able to read the room and instinctively know what many people are wanting to hear or what they relate to, other politicians have this but may keep quiet in order not to offend. Trump is aware that for him it does not matter too much. Remember what he said about shooting someone on 5th Avenue he absolutely believes this, he knows his supporters better than I believe many politicians do

It's convenient for you to use the word female now isn't it 🤣 Your previous posts signify that you don't give a fuck about females.

EsmaCannonball · 06/11/2024 15:01

Also, where is Kamala? The fact that she disappeared the moment it looked like going badly and seems to have gone into hiding just shows the poor calibre of candidate she was. She wasn't presidential material. (And, no, that doesn't mean I think Trump is presidential material.) Can you imagine Obama or Reagan not facing the cameras at this kind of moment?

In the post truth world, it's the control of information, leveraged by big buisness and the rich which is the critical factor. News outlets are mainly controlled by the right in the US (just as they are in the UK) so the odds are always stacked against a left leaning party.

Edited

Talking of the post truth world, did you hear that the democrats believe that some women have penises? And that these penis women should be able to access women's sport and spaces?

MichaelandKirk · 06/11/2024 15:05

The Democrats lied and lied about the mental health of Biden and very silly it made they look. Then you had a White House Spokeswomen who got arsy with anyone questioning his health. They lost this election for themselves and Harris had no real policies that anyone was hearing or lisening to.

Maybe next time they will choose a stronger candicate and I honestly dont think it needs to be a white man. Obama did OK (whether he actually achieved much is another question). He also put his power behind Biden and became one of the liars covering up Biden.

MichaelandKirk · 06/11/2024 15:09

I agree with PP that Harris has made a run for it. Even Hilary Clinton made a speech even though it was through gritted teeth.

What do you mean by this izimbra?

I assume by 'intolerable' and 'very very dangerous' you mean sex realism.

It might well be intolerable in your opinion to tell a male that he should not be competing in women's sport or have access to women's single sex spaces, but do you know what, I just don't care.

Women are fully human despite the bleatings of the gender idologist.

It is not violence to say no to men.

I heard that too! So did Kemi, Trump, Vance, Musk & the whole Senate of Republicans. I think they'll absolutely make female sports & spaces great again!

It's literally going back to the dark ages pandering to men's demands. What would the suffragates who fought do hard for female rights think of this virtue signalling to males who can already access the sports teams & toilets of their biological sex.

Ansjovis · 06/11/2024 15:13

I think a lot of it comes down to some people being gullible and ignorant. The same as people voted for brexit because they were supposedly giving however many million pounds to the NHS a week that never materialised, people in the US are voting because they think they want what he's selling but many of those people won't actually want it if they actually listen to the reality of it all. Of course some of them will, but I think a good portion of them won't.

As I say on most posts about US politics, John Oliver breaks this stuff down really well.

BESTAUNTB · 06/11/2024 15:15

TheShellBeach · 06/11/2024 10:36

That is exactly it. Biden held on for far too long.
I'm so angry with his team and family.

Yes I think he was a silly, vain man.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/11/2024 15:15

@izimbra I am centre left and fed up of the whole subject - it monopolises far too many threads it's one reason I think the Democrats lost- perceived as too far 'the other way' -- in terms of votes , you can go too far focussing on trans and LGBT and basically just re engaging those who support you anyway and not enough focusing on other issues and policy that matter more to a great many more people.
