Kamala supporters/ democrats: why do you think you've lost?

TERFCat · 06/11/2024 09:56

From reading Twitter, the rhetoric on the left seems to be that they've lost because Trump voters are stupid, racist, sexist etc etc.

Personally, I think that the conversation needs far more nuance than name calling.

I'm left wing but can't vote for anyone who will allow men into women's safe spaces or will sterilize autistic/ gay children. If this makes me "thick" or "fascist", then so be it, but those names won't change my vote.

Oh, and Israel. I forgot to include that too.

I'm not a Kamala supporter.

I hope it turns out that the Democrats lost Pennsylvania because of Gaza - Trump is loathsome but Biden and Harris have been in charge during the US-funded bloodshed.

But Trump has the same - if not stronger pro Israel policy. So that makes no sense

Illpickthatup · 06/11/2024 11:24

A large percentage of Americans think chocolate milk comes from brown cows. They are not the brightest bunch.

They lost because they allowed an elderly man who was not up to the job to carry on in post unchecked. They lost because they realised this too late before they could take a measured decision about an election candidate.

This. But also:
they have now taken on identity politics as their core premise instead of focussing on class politics (as in: they are very invested in DEI and making sure, for eg, Fortune 500 companies have a diverse board, when what people want is healthcare, jobs, housing)

They are not listening to their working class voters, and frankly it seems as though they felt entitled to the votes of black and other minority voters just by putting out someone with various minorities in her background, as though that is enough.

They have alienated GC women, and have alienated their core voters. They need to have a long hard look at themselves and decide who they represent.

CheerfulBunny · 06/11/2024 11:24

I think his campaign has tapped into the deep insecurities and fears in the US. Most people don't think very critically, unfortunately.

LizzieBowesLyon · 06/11/2024 10:38

This. And there are plenty of sexists of all races who think this isn’t the job for ANY woman. Hilary showed that.

But that doesn't explain the largely black communities that voted Trump, plus the Hispanics and Muslim Arabs. You can't just scream that half the population is racist, thick and misogynistic

Theendlesssteps765 · 06/11/2024 11:25

I think the Democrats lost primarily because they didn’t have sufficiently high quality candidates.

Joe Biden was too old to stand, although he did a good job while in office. And they lost a lot of traction switching mid-stream.

And KH was unpopular within her own party. She failed to get through the first round of the Democrat candidate election. And was parachuted in by Joe to become VP.

I desperately wanted her to win but I don’t think she was a good orator and I don’t think she had enough political clout.

Lots of blue collar workers voted for Obama so I don’t think race was a determining factor in this election necessarily, despite being ever-present.

A good dose of misogyny probably didn’t help!

Lampzade · 06/11/2024 11:26

Mainly misogyny , racism and the fact that she ran a rubbish campaign .

No focus on policies and no focus on what people care about.
People care about their wallets, Trump focused on the economy, keeping jobs, protecting the US, immigration, and stop throwing money at Ukraine - instead sort out disaster areas in the US.

Totally agree with this, I think there’s more voters on the breadline than they thought- when I heard Trump supporters they said he’d make sure they had more money for groceries and fuel- women’s rights can only go so far when you can’t afford your weekly shopping, she needed to appeal to everyone, not just the people whose bills weren’t their main concern.

pikkumyy77 · 06/11/2024 11:31

Look: America chose fascism. We did it with our eyes open. Trump fomented a riot when he lost the last election in which he publicly threatened the life of his own vice president and his supporters chose that. He is a convicted rapist with 13 other historic rape accusations and 100 hours of tapes with Jeffrey Epstein describing his assaults and their shared history if sex trafficking and they chose that. He publically called the sitting vice president a whore and a cunt and they chose that. He publically called for a massive trade war with China and europe and they chose that. He proposes to put people who believe liberal women and gay people are possesed by demons in charge of the government and they chose that. He proposes a national abortion ban which will end basic care for pregnant women and they chose that.He proposes to give Ukraine back to Russia snd pull the US out of Nato

Some of his voters are really stupid and racist—I’ve talked to them and they literally think up is down sometimes. But for the most part they like what Trump is selling. Fascism is a movement from below of fantasy strength and power, of repression and rejection of the neighboring enemy and the dirty enemy within—even the enemy who is your child or your wife. And it looks for a leader. That’s Trump. And they chose him.

I think there is a level of arrogance on the left - they think they are clever and that their followers are intelligent. I don't think they are as inclusive as they think they are.

They need to listen more and reality find out what people care about - their hopes and fears.

I detest trump but I think he voices people's emotions and emotions beat any rational argument. He's very self serving but I don't think he's ideologically captured.

amber763 · 06/11/2024 11:33

Her campaign was terrible. calling people Nazis, fascists, garbage etc isn't the best plan. If they continue to so they'll lose again in 2028

YellowDaffodilRedTulip · 06/11/2024 10:32

white men will always win against black women in America.

First post nails it!!!

GreyBlackLove · 06/11/2024 11:35

I'd add to some of the reasons listed with the fact that the republican stance on reproductive rights genuinely does resonate with some states - look at Florida voting again state protections entirely separate from the presidential race.

I think Democrats did a poor job of countering misinformation, there are people who still think Kamala was a border czar or in charge of borders - because unlike the Trump campaign they didn't adapt to more modern ways of reaching demographics.

Agree Biden taking so long to pull out of the race had a massive impact.

Cost of living crisis and inflation absolutely reflect more poorly on the incumbent party. Plus many vote by party rather than candidate.

Basically a million reasons. I do worry about what is next for Gaza and Ukraine, NATO and important taxes as well as a host of other things. Keen to see how KS navigates his relationship with Trump.

CheerfulBunny · 06/11/2024 11:36

@pikkumyy77 Very well said. So many incidents should have been the end of his political career, not least mocking a disabled man at a press conference. I don't understand how some public figures have been 'cancelled' for a lot less than he has done, yet Trump continues to flourish?

afishcalledvanda · 06/11/2024 11:36

I think they were too late ousting Biden which left no choice other than Kamala.

The voting public are morons 🤷🏻‍♀️

hairbearbunches · 06/11/2024 11:37

@pikkumyy77 Fabulous post. Uncomfortable reading for those who voted for him over there, and those over here cheering them on.

People think Hitler came ready formed with death camps in his back yard ready to be moved into position.

Edited

His own people are Nazis—literal Nazis. The Pennsylvania Trump organizer was fired for being a literal Nazi the day before the election. And it was his own staff who called him a fascist.

Doteycat · 06/11/2024 11:39

America is a racist mysogonistic ignorant badly educated country.
Thats the long and the short of it.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 06/11/2024 11:40

It's sad that people think that a criminal, racist, "pussy-grabbing" misogynist who dances at his supporters instead of talking policies is a worthy leader for them. Ah well.

Life is simple. People are simple. I do think this actually is the main reason why -

"... they've lost because Trump voters are stupid, racist, sexist etc etc."

Yes all this

CheerfulBunny · 06/11/2024 11:43

Also I sort of feel that constantly saying the left hasn't done enough to listen/understand working class and lower income people is giving people a free pass to support someone who conforms to their deep seated racism and sexism.
Probably the same story here too.

They lost because they allowed an elderly man who was not up to the job to carry on in post unchecked. They lost because they realised this too late before they could take a measured decision about an election candidate.

Exactly this, they expected people to trust in a party that kept telling them an old man who was clearly in decline was a suitable president.
Harris then hasn't managed to do or say anything compelling enough to build back any trust, she may not have had enough time, or maybe was not the right person to be up against a huge character like Trump.
I actually think all of her celebrity endorsements may have been damaging. Joe Public doesn't care what JLo, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Taylor Swift think. Their lives are not remotely like a normal person's. So was Trump for the normal folk?
