Looks like Trump could win?

It's looking good for Trump. My dad is a total Trump hater and has been convinced that he won't win, especially since Kamala took over.
I don't know how the system works but is it too early to say that Trump is going to win?

This isn't terribly surprising, given the global shift away from left leaning politics and leadership. An enabling approach from government is at the crux, it's that which appeals most to people.

Already there are people on this thread saying they're going to boycott America if Trump wins. An illustration of the 'with or against me' arrogance that permeates today's left(er) leaning contingent; there's nothing progressive about telling people they only matter if they agree with you (indeed I won't even acknowledge your existence - I'll boycott you! - if you don't).

I agree that politics has become extremely tribal. But I have to say, a lot of that originates from Trump himself. The man has absolutely no grace and is a big, spoilt baby - if he doesn't win he throws a massive tantrum. I think it's really hard to take his win graciously when he's behaved so appallingly and thrown disgusting accusations around.

We're not much better over here - Brexit caused an enormous divide which still hasn't healed.

Binary, tribal politics doesn't help any of us.

Tonight on the BBC there was a Republic and a Democrat and the conversation was just so refreshing. Although both clearly have different political leanings, they were respectful to each other and were willing to acknowledge when each other had a good point. And they weren't afraid to criticise or point out failings within their own party. It was such a breath of fresh air.

Marking the end of feminism in America.

Republicans have just won the Senate! The Democrats are being wiped out of government. They went too far to the left. Trump apparently has had huge amounts of Hispanic voters who would typically value family, their faith & are typically traditional. Harris didn't get the huge female vote she was expecting.

Too far to the left? They’re about as left as Reagan. A few “feel good” social issues (without financial consequences on donors…) being the exception.

the democrats have screwed this up beyond comprehension. But being too far left is not the issue.

Not surprised. Totally deflated hot air balloon. Hillary Clinton hid away too IIRC. And she was made of sterner stuff. Mind you I have to admit the Donald wasn't exactly a gracious loser last time round! Not called yet though. Maybe a surprise is still in store.

He's getting ready to come out & talk now (look & learn Kamala!)

DanielaDressen · 06/11/2024 06:04

All the pundits on cnn are saying it seems like people voted for Trump as they trust him to improve the economy more than Harris. That currently they’re concerned about inflation and job security and this is more important than women’s rights or even border security

WillowTit · 06/11/2024 06:05

she has postponed her speech - fair enough

This has - once again - made me so incredibly thankful I’m not living in a 2 party system.

Which seems to encourage black and white thinking and tribalism, unfortunately…

The Founding Fathers must be spinning in their graves. The US voting to subjugate themselves to mad King Donald. A dark day.

When Trump comes out graciously in defeat then you'll have a point.

He wouldn't even do a proper handover when he left the White House - the only president to strop out without waiting. And let's not even get into the mad accusations of voter fraud - but obviously only in the states where he lost.

Trump is great at bragging. That's not exactly news. It's his USP.

You make a very valid point about Kamala failing to put in an appearance, but let's not pretend your man is some beacon of honour.

Applebumblebee · 06/11/2024 06:06

I don't know how true it is but twice - independently of each other, American guys have said to me "anything but a woman" - they personally weren't against women, they were explaining why a female president will never happen.

R053 · 06/11/2024 06:07

Well that’s it then for the planet. I expect Trump will pull America out of the Paris accord so that they can drill, baby drill. Climate scientists must be very despondent.

No it's not, she should have graciously thanked her supporters & congratulated the incoming president.

RachelNoire · 06/11/2024 06:00

Lmfao who do you think has been in power? Plenty of time over the last few years for change.

What “refreshing change” were you expecting exactly? fucking hell.

if they hadn’t done it whilst in power it’s not gonna happen, blatantly obvious

From an outsiders point of view, (I live in Wales), Kamala looked as though she’s been campaigning against herself with all this ‘change’ rhetoric. Change from what? The Democrats have been in power for the last four years.

Oriunda · 06/11/2024 06:08

I’m so glad we visited the US before the election. Can’t believe that any woman, or any decent man, would vote for him. At this point I think the US will never have a female president. I fear for our world.

Llhaaf · 06/11/2024 05:57

I’ve booked to pop over in February. I can’t wait to experience the atmosphere, after 47 has been sworn in.

What a bizarre way to think. I guess that’s fanaticism for you.

I'm sure millions upon millions of females voted for him too! What a comeback!

I have to be honest that if I lived in the US I'd feel quite despairing about only being able to pick between Harris and Trump.

I'd always go for Harris because Trump is absolutely awful in every possible way, but it would be a extremely reluctant vote. There's much about Harris' policies that I don't like. It's not a great choice.

I actually blame the Republicans somewhat for this mess - being willing to put up a felon with further pending trials as their candidate speaks volumes about their morals. I have a lot of respect for the Republicans that have refused to support him. It's career suicide for them but extremely honourable - which seems to be a rare thing in politics these days.

I’m sure she will do when it’s over. While it’s looking exceedingly likely Trump will win it’s not been called yet? So she won’t concede yet I guess just in case of a miracle.

WillowTit · 06/11/2024 06:10

just what does this say about Americans!

timetodecide2345 · 06/11/2024 06:12

Glad I visited the US last year. I won't be going whilst he is in power. I don't feel safe as a woman visiting that country.

I don't think she should have conceded because there is still a mathematical chance. I think it all hinges on Pennsylvania. I think she's probably toast but it's not absolutely over yet.

But I really do think she should have appeared to say thanks, and let's reconvene tomorrow. I think it's extremely poor form just vanishing and leaving crowds to disperse. It's very ungrateful.

The optics are awful too - lots of celebrations and high spirits in the Republican camp, while the Democrats slink home. It's not a good look.
