Looks like Trump could win?

It's looking good for Trump. My dad is a total Trump hater and has been convinced that he won't win, especially since Kamala took over.
I don't know how the system works but is it too early to say that Trump is going to win?

I agree that politics has become extremely tribal. But I have to say, a lot of that originates from Trump himself. The man has absolutely no grace and is a big, spoilt baby - if he doesn't win he throws a massive tantrum. I think it's really hard to take his win graciously when he's behaved so appallingly and thrown disgusting accusations around.

We're not much better over here - Brexit caused an enormous divide which still hasn't healed.

Binary, tribal politics doesn't help any of us.

Tonight on the BBC there was a Republic and a Democrat and the conversation was just so refreshing. Although both clearly have different political leanings, they were respectful to each other and were willing to acknowledge when each other had a good point. And they weren't afraid to criticise or point out failings within their own party. It was such a breath of fresh air.

Yes and no 🤔😂 His 'out to get me' stance does have some basis in reality!

That’s it then for American democracy. I was going to take dd after A levels to visit Washington and NY. We won’t be visiting now.

I’m sure that’ll be a big deal to no-one

All the pundits on cnn are saying it seems like people voted for Trump as they trust him to improve the economy more than Harris. That currently they’re concerned about inflation and job security and this is more important than women’s rights or even border security

To be fair her only strong point was women's rights, she has always been weak when it comes to the other core issues like the economy, immigration and foreign policy aka the Middle East and Russia/Ukraine war.

I just wish I hadn't turned the radio on and had a few more hours of hope. But Biden has been a waste of space not saying I don't blame them I just think wtf.

Ilovelifeverymuch · 06/11/2024 06:15

And Trump has won Georgia, 3 of 7 swing states

I’m so glad we visited the US before the election. Can’t believe that any woman, or any decent man, would vote for him. At this point I think the US will never have a female president. I fear for our world.

I will not visit America whilst racist rapist Trump is in power. Putin must be so happy.

I actually despair - how awful does someone have to be to put off voters?

As awful as Harris it seems! Why on earth anyone imagines she would have been better us the depressing thing.

Exactly! Who cares.

piscofrisco · 06/11/2024 06:16

I thought, he would win but very much hoped he wouldn't. Nothing short of a disaster for women, minorities, the environment, Ukraine and so much more.

What foreigners fail to realize is that neither Trump nor Harris have power over abortion. In order to put a national abortion law into place, the House and Senate need to agree on legislation, with the Senate requiring a 60% majority to support any new law. There are not 60 Senators who will vote for or against abortion, since the Senate, like the country, is pretty evenly split. Without Congress putting a bill on the President's desk to be signed, a federal abortion law is impossible, and Americans know this. So does Harris, yet she made abortion her central issue. Really bad mistake. The issues Americans care about most, namely inflation and immigration, she all but ignored. A very, very bad decision on her part, and now we are seeing the result.

Well im sure not every Trump voter is a knuckle dragging hick. Ive heard loads of his supporters and the can actually string two words together.
I dont like it when entertainers think they know better than lowly people and tell them who to vote for.
I dont really care who wins but I cant understand how so many people are ' horrified and scared if Trump wins . I think these people must be scared of there own shadow.

100%.. I think Kamala & the Democrats were just too woke for America. The Republicans have also won the Senate.

The snowflakes on X are already in complete meltdown 😁

😂

AliasGrace47 · 06/11/2024 06:19

Hmm well Spiders, there've been gender critical boycotts of stuff, & I agree w those. A boycott isn't just not acknowledging existence, it's normally trying to force business Change. Not sure how a travel boycott will do that..
But I get the anger behind it. I mean, Trump is going to pull out of the Gaza war, & Ukraine. He denies climate change. Is that really what we need? Not to mention he trued to overthrow the state 4 years ago, under the world's eyes.

Ilovelifeverymuch · 06/11/2024 06:20

New York Times's popular election needle is now saying very likely that Trump will be president.

Kamala seems to have given up with the way she left without speaking to her supporters.

Looks like Trump could win?

That’s a real shame though.

I was disappointed when Biden got in, but I respected the American vote and continued to visit throughout the Democratic presidency.

America remains wonderful. The country remains beautiful. The cities remain incredible.

I’ve been visiting, sometimes with gaps as short as 6 weeks between visits, for the last 20 years. It’s an amazing place to be regardless of who is in Government.

As a Brit looking at the world and looking at the US from the outside in, I wonder what on earth makes people vote for someone as inherently nasty as Trump and that people would think its Ok choose that as their leader.

I fear for the world. This is as bad as it gets.

Is it any different from us voting for BoJo because people 'liked' him?
Someone who showed us repeatedly who he was, fired from a job for lying, multiple affairs. Didn't have a plan or policy for Brexit but just said he would 'get it done' - people believed him.............

I could go on and on. Trump is BoJo and Farage combined on steroids - the hate, division and lies. I feel very sorry for all women in the US

Seems that personality politics and nationalism usurps everything.

PinkStarAtNight · 06/11/2024 06:20

I'm genuinely confused this time. Why???

Up until this point I have only rationalised it by thinking that the majority of the American population must simply be uneducated and/or stupid. But I am starting to think there is something else I need to be aware of.

Can anyone explain to me why Americans have voted this way?

Genuine question- and at this point I'm honestly willing to listen and learn, because obviously the Democrats are getting something majorly wrong that I'm just not aware of. How can they have failed so badly as to warrant at Trump victory?

This is very depressing 😥

Thanks for this. I didn't know the Senate rules and follow these kind of threads for education.

So it's not just sexism then? Do you think that issues such as abortion, which are a central concern in other countries - are less important there then?

I can understand the main worry about inflation after the egg crisis - it's the last cheap protein available

SpidersAreShitheads · 06/11/2024 05:57

I agree with all of that.

And yet she'd still be a better leader than the orange lunatic.

Please tell me which policies of Kamala would make her a better president.

Every single time she has been asked about her policies, her only answer has been “Trump did this, or Trump did that. Not once have I heard “I would do…….”

Trump on the other hand has reeled off big, big plans, on economy, fuel, jobs, health, tax, security. So many realistic plans.

Meanwhile, Kamala has gone home to bed.

Thank God she can’t drag the USA further down the road to ruin.

I have to be honest that if I lived in the US I'd feel quite despairing about only being able to pick between Harris and Trump.

I'd always go for Harris because Trump is absolutely awful in every possible way, but it would be a extremely reluctant vote. There's much about Harris' policies that I don't like. It's not a great choice.

I actually blame the Republicans somewhat for this mess - being willing to put up a felon with further pending trials as their candidate speaks volumes about their morals. I have a lot of respect for the Republicans that have refused to support him. It's career suicide for them but extremely honourable - which seems to be a rare thing in politics these days.

I agree. I strongly blame the Republicans for this mess.

They’ve fully succumbed to populism. There were Republicans against Trump. They either shut up to save their careers or have become fairly irrelevant.

I also blame the Democrats, btw. Being unable to present an electable and appealing alternative to a clown like Trump is a disgrace.

But I’m not surprised by this outcome. And neither should other countries’ leaders and politicians be.
They had 4+ years to prepare for this (more like 8, considering Trump’s first term). Let’s hope they actually used this time constructively!

WillowTit · 06/11/2024 06:22

its the immigration issue as well as inflation.
worldwide issue

No it's not, she should have graciously thanked her supporters & congratulated the incoming president.

This time 2020, Trump was ahead. By morning, a very different story. It is far too early to call it over.

mids2019 · 06/11/2024 06:22

Why did the democrats offer Kamala coronation and not have a wider field of democratic candidates initally? Biden keeping in office long after his cognitive decline was apparent meant Harris was presented as a done deal and I think from the outset that put people off.

The initial overly self congratulatory speeches with Kamala mimicking Obama badly with her oratory was over confidence and the initial poll jump could never be carried forward.

I don't think I will see a woman President in my lifetime now.
