US Election - following the results

I'm really trying to stay up but I'm going to struggle and suspect I won't know anything more than I do now anyway.

The FT have a very pleasing graphic showing all the results come in.

I'm watching the BBC too but it's not as clear.

Where are you keeping up with the results and what are you looking out for in particular?

Georgia think they're going to declare imminently which is a bold statement, I can't see how they'll manage it.

Some excellent commentary on the World Service. Listened most of the night.

I am pretty sure Trump will win. It's insane.

Apparently he has attracted the male Latino vote as well as some formerly left leaning suburban educated women. It's unbelievable.

I think it’s great that Latinos are voting as Americans and are no longer to be considered a monolithic group that a party can take for granted. They are voting for things that matter to them, like the economy and the border.

MabelsBeats · 06/11/2024 06:20

I think that’s it, he’s done it. The New York Times is saying Trump has a ‘>95% chance of victory’

Their projection for the electoral college:
Trump: 306 (270 - 322)
Harris: 232 (216 - 268)

Trump takes Pennsylvania and therefore the Presidency of the United States!

NYT's election needle is now saying very likely Trump will be president.

Whatever happens, KH has made massive inroads of which she should be proud. I agree with what you’re saying about not being a great candidate, which indicates a better pick could have a decisive win even if not white male… especially against Trump. We have issues with getting decent candidates in the UK. It seems worse in the US.

Yes, absolutely agree.

I think the Democrats needed to pick a candidate to beat Trump and Kamala was just too far removed from him to pick up disenchanted Republicans. And I think being so entwined with what voters see as Biden's failures has also been a problem for her.

I think she's done well and performed so much better than I expected. A lot of the criticism appears to have been unfounded, but she was just the wrong person to be a viable opponent for Trump. Maybe this election wasn't the right time to try and get a woman in office, it would have been better to focus on victory, rather than progress, perhaps? I think it was so important to stop Trump getting back in, not because of his policies, but because of the fact that he's a corrupt bully who has no regard for what it means to be president other than what benefits he can glean from it.

I agree our choices here in the UK are pretty dire too.

Was just looked at PA county by county and yep, he is taking it.

LesbianNana · 06/11/2024 06:27

And he’s winning the popular vote by a large margin.

While I don't like how they've voted, I always think that high levels of engagement is really important so this is very positive.

No party should ever be arrogant enough to assume they have the votes of a demographic.

I hate the result but it's good to see that there's been a high turnout. Just wish it had gone the other way haha

We agree about some things and disagree about others (spiders lol) but I have enjoyed our respectful back and forth, without name calling, as it should be. 🙂

SpidersAreShitheads · 06/11/2024 06:34

I thought Harris might have a chance with PA but she’s done. Looking at these figures, there’s no hope.

I thought when she failed to show that it was a sign that she knew it was over.

Ah well, Putin will be happy at least. Always a good sign….. 🫣

Proud of what? The woman very happily threw females under the bus by endorsing males in female spaces & sports.

I totally agree with you there! And this is shameful and in all honesty why I very likely would hold my nose and reluctantly vote Trump were I American. However, I still think she should be proud of her achievements.

Yes, absolutely.

I have thought long and hard about why people vote for Trump tonight. I’m autistic and I know sometimes I can be very black and white. I have such huge issues with how he’s acted in the past which I struggle to see past - but I can see why people are struggling to support the Democrats too.

I appreciate the conversation 🙂

Gender ideology brought out the female vote, I think. It’s harmful to them and it’s harmful to their daughters

KenAdams · 06/11/2024 07:20

Morning! Yes, it's done isn't it.

We can talk about why later but Pennsylvania has sealed the deal.

Wonder if they will ask for the cheating allegations they were claiming yesterday to be investigated?

AngeloMysterioso · 06/11/2024 07:31

I can’t stand Trump, but I don’t know if I could have voted for the woman who wrote a fawning letter to Dylan Mulvaney congratulating him on pretending to be a woman for a whole year.

greengreyblue · 06/11/2024 07:32

Unbelievable. Only positive is he can’t win again .

Cnon · 06/11/2024 07:34

Wisconsin put him over the top with ten electoral college votes.

Trump 277
Harris 261

Erm.

Where would you like me to start with how undemocratic leaders have a habit of not respecting the rule of law and what one of the major fears was.... That there wouldn't be another election - certain not a democratic one.

... Let me correct you. The only positive is that Trump is in his late 70s and not got the most healthy of lifestyles.

KenAdams · 06/11/2024 07:41

More importantly, it looks like they will win both houses too.

That was simply their strategy to get the vote out. It worked.

He’s got plenty of children to step into his shoes. I can’t believe America has voted him in. God help us all.

I knew this would happen. Americans are not to be underestimated in the mental decisions they make.
