I'm really trying to stay up but I'm going to struggle and suspect I won't know anything more than I do now anyway.

The FT have a very pleasing graphic showing all the results come in.

I'm watching the BBC too but it's not as clear.

Where are you keeping up with the results and what are you looking out for in particular?

Georgia think they're going to declare imminently which is a bold statement, I can't see how they'll manage it.

It's now Trump 178 & Harris 113, he got Texas with 40 points among others

@Kibble29 - I've never placed a bet. Are short odds good for that candidate or not?

Short odds mean it’s more likely to happen. For example, Manchester City would have very short odds in a game against Fleetwood Town because they’re much better.

With Trump’s 3/10 odds, for every £10 you bet, you win £3 if that outcome happens. So £20 will get you £6 and so on. You need to gamble high to win low because the bookie thinks it’s a dead cert.

Harris’ odds of 5/2 means you place £2 and you’ll win £5. £4 will get you £10.

So the £10 bet that wins you £3 for Trump would win you £50 for Harris.

Essentially, the bookies say he’ll be the winner.

@Kibble29 thanks. Damn.

I don't understand how states are being confirmed already, is it different rules to hear, can they count before closing?

East Coast voting closed a few hours ago.

Polyp0 · 06/11/2024 02:09

I think they get a lot of postal votes, don’t they, and voting in advance? Maybe that’s why they’re able to call so early. Though I’m just guessing.

I'm on the independent and it's saying 120 Trump 99 Harris, am I looking at the wrong thing or it's just behind?

There is no state or federal law that says vote counting must stop a few hours after the polls close.

Motorina · 06/11/2024 02:10

There's different rules in each state. Some can begin counting the postal votes as they come in, some have to wait til the polls close.

Because there are multiple time zones voting is still open in the west of the country, but closed several hours ago in the east.

Also the British system uses a piece of paper and a pencil, and I've never had to queue more than about 30 seconds. I'm listening to a congressman talk about many hour long queues and extended voting hours. Seriously, they know the number of questions on the ballot, and they know the likely turnout. Why can't they run the thing properly?

they are voting for multiple different things, plus they had to evacuate some places for bomb threats and machine issues, and most people vote after work if they're voting in person, plus if you have any changes to your registration you have to queue for that too which makes everything else take longer

Try refreshing your screen in case you're behind.

Also, it's not like the UK system where results are announced by constituency so everyone knows the winner/loser at the same time. Instead, the votes dribble in. There's no official announcement. Instead the media call a state for a candidate, when they consider enough votes are in that they can be confident. Different media outlets call each state at different time.

Mlanket · 06/11/2024 02:14

Does this mean Trump is likely to win?

Yeah, I know all this. But (setting bomb threats aside) they know how many issues will be on each state's ballot ahead of time, and they know the population. It should be possible to resource it to better meet demand.

Firefly1987 · 06/11/2024 02:15

I think Trump was expected to be ahead at first, but who knows if Harris will catch up.

MsAmerica · 06/11/2024 02:16

Why the focus on Georgia? Pennsylvania is more to watch.

Pumpkinspawn · 06/11/2024 02:17

Trump just won Ohio so now we are at Trump 195 Harris 113

AutumnLeaves1990 · 06/11/2024 02:23

I'm wondering if it wasn't going to be such a close race after all and it was an excuse to get more people voting and hoping for a KH win? Counting my chickens but I think Trump has got this.

MissRachelismycoparent · 06/11/2024 02:26

It certainly looks better from trump

What do Americans see in him that we don't?

PlumViper · 06/11/2024 02:30

based on elon musk Pac, of over 100mil for trump i predict it will be trump

ipredictariot5 · 06/11/2024 02:34

seems like the US is still stuck in the doom loop that the UK just about managed to exit in July
wholly depressing that Florida has not overturned the 6 week abortion ban. I fail to understand why so many women vote for Trump.

MissRachelismycoparent · 06/11/2024 02:36

I'm watching on Fox News and you can see the percentage of the vote countered and who is leading, it looks like it's never been as close as they anticipated?

EmeraldRoulette · 06/11/2024 02:37

Thank you for the explanations

I also find it confusing that media call it before official results but hey ho
