I'm really trying to stay up but I'm going to struggle and suspect I won't know anything more than I do now anyway.

The FT have a very pleasing graphic showing all the results come in.

I'm watching the BBC too but it's not as clear.

Where are you keeping up with the results and what are you looking out for in particular?

Georgia think they're going to declare imminently which is a bold statement, I can't see how they'll manage it.

During his last presidency the Trump administration immediately rescinded protections for transgender students in public schools made by the Obama administration’s changes to Title IX in 2016.

The move by the Justice and Education departments reversed guidance the Obama administration publicized in May 2016, which said a federal law known as Title IX protects the right of transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identities.

Pres Trump kept his word then, and he will now.

Wow. My 16 yo dd thinks there is no way the US is voting in a black female president. Either candidate is scary for different reasons. Really not looking forward to the result.

I said this at the time.

A female, black President would have been a big step for a country where Trump politics has encouraged lots of right-wing, xenophobic/racist views.

I have never been her biggest fan because of gender ideology but I thought she was a poor pick. Aside from being black/female, her association with Biden didn’t help.

I actually think she’s performed way better than I expected, I thought it would be a wipeout initially. However, convincing the floating voters in the middle was always a big ask. And I think many of those who did convert to her did so because of how bad Trump has been rather than being truly convinced by Harris.

Trump's flipping Virginia

It should flip back. A lot of DCers live in the inner part of Virginia.

What frustrates me are the states that KNOW the results, but they want the headlines, so they are holding out to make a splash. GA is famous for it as are the upper Midwest states. Maine is more sparsely populated, but they still play a game.

We will get the government we deserve. Until the country can stop the individual hate and divisiveness, we will continue to have asshats for candidates. That will not happen until the big wigs of the party stop dividing everyone. Then, maybe we will get a candidate worthy of being our President. Until then, into the mire we trudge.

What’s interesting this time is that Trump has no clear back up party this time. He was presented as a Lone Ranger, had fewer feet on the ground and a weak social media presence.
This time we don’t get Kushner and Ivanka. His sons don’t represent a more liberal side of the country like they did.
All in all, who knows what the US will get.

Does this mean Trump is likely to win?

No clue

Words · 06/11/2024 05:04

Some excellent commentary on the World Service. Listened most of the night.

I am pretty sure Trump will win. It's insane.

Apparently he has attracted the male Latino vote as well as some formerly left leaning suburban educated women. It's unbelievable.

I think people may have grudgingly cast a vote for trump rather than enthusiastically. I think progressive policies have hurt the dems quite badly. I also remember when Dems were trashing Kamala for being a bit useless (I read NYT and Washpo).

I also wonder if some looked at the candidates and their Vp’s and felt reassured that Vance is there. He isn’t actually mental and I sincerely hope he hasn’t actually fundamentally changed from his “Hillbilly Eulogy” days because then he was thoughtful and intelligent. It may not be as bad as people think. I do worry they will cut funding for Ukraine.

NautilusLionfish · 06/11/2024 05:13

But she is catching up. He has stagnated while she is rocketing

She's gaining in the States she was expected/predicted to win not the swing states.

If she doesn't win the swing states she loses.

Edited

I don’t know a lot about Vance but what I’ve seen is dreadful. But that may be skewed because he’s trying to parrot Trump-style rhetoric.

I was just listening to some astute analysis on BBC. And they were talking about the difference between being offended and being affected. Apparently some voters were saying that they are offended by Trump’s words and views, but they’re affected by Democrat policy. And it’s the latter that makes the biggest practical difference hence holding their nose and voting for Trump. It seems to have moved away from the wholesale adoration of Trump towards a more grudging acceptance because they prefer his economic policies.

mitogoshigg · 06/11/2024 05:26

Pretty sure I can see where this is headed, in the us they are predicting a trump win. Scary times for the world. (Some) Americans are simply crazy, why why!!

My friend has her application to move here to the U.K. completed as she isn't staying

SabrinaThwaite · 06/11/2024 05:29

Looking at the bookies, Harris is 35/1 to win. Trump is 2/9.

SnoopysHoose · 06/11/2024 05:31

Trump 230, Harris 210
270 needed to win

Whatever happens, KH has made massive inroads of which she should be proud. I agree with what you’re saying about not being a great candidate, which indicates a better pick could have a decisive win even if not white male… especially against Trump. We have issues with getting decent candidates in the UK. It seems worse in the US.

Hello412 · 06/11/2024 05:37

Looks like he's got Georgia

Yeah I think so too, and the Republicans just won control of the Senate

MrsPeregrine · 06/11/2024 05:38

I’m listening to LBC and they are saying that Kamala would need to win all 3 of the remaining blue wall states to win. That would be Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

Cnon · 06/11/2024 05:41

I'm not resting easy utill my preferred person has 270 and stays there!

Proud of what? The woman very happily threw females under the bus by endorsing males in female spaces & sports.

MabelsBeats · 06/11/2024 05:43

Georgia has indeed been called for Trump!

She's practically got Massachusetts. One down two to go
Unreasonable hope

She just got one of her people to come out & tell her supporters to go home. Wouldn't even come out & address them herself. Not a good look & shows she would not have made a good leader.. Running away when the going gets tough

Not Massachusetts, Wisconsin. Massachusetts is solidly democrat. Wisconsin is a swing state.

I said several days ago here on MN that it was shaping up to be a Rep blowout. The Reps will end up with the Presidency and both houses of Congress.

MrsPeregrine · 06/11/2024 06:06

The Guardian is reporting that betting markets have swung in favour of a Trump win. Both sides have thousands of lawyers on standby according to LBC.

Ilovelifeverymuch · 06/11/2024 06:15

Georgia has been called for Trump, 3 of 7 swing states.
