US Election - following the results

I'm really trying to stay up but I'm going to struggle and suspect I won't know anything more than I do now anyway.

The FT have a very pleasing graphic showing all the results come in.

I'm watching the BBC too but it's not as clear.

Where are you keeping up with the results and what are you looking out for in particular?

Georgia think they're going to declare imminently which is a bold statement, I can't see how they'll manage it.

@ipredictariot5 he will not allow males infiltrate female sports anymore or female spaces, toilets or prisons.

seems like the US is still stuck in the doom loop that the UK just about managed to exit in July
wholly depressing that Florida has not overturned the 6 week abortion ban. I fail to understand why so many women vote for Trump.

My SIL is an immigrant waiting for her visa (overstayed her esta but is married to an us citizen). She told me tonight that trump doesn't have the best intentions but his decisions all turn out to be right. For example he will apparently revamp the food industry so that food will be of a higher standard like in the eu and she wouldn't have to buy her groceries at Whole Foods! She isn't rich at all, her husband is a realtor (and they work on commission), she lives with her MIL but yet despite all these circumstances she still thinks trump is a good idea.

But that's the thing with populists, we all have a pet topic and populists would say that they would solve everyone's pet issue. An alarming number of people believe this...

Also the British system uses a piece of paper and a pencil, and I've never had to queue more than about 30 seconds. I'm listening to a congressman talk about many hour long queues and extended voting hours. Seriously, they know the number of questions on the ballot, and they know the likely turnout. Why can't they run the thing properly?

I'm from Houston and my ballot was quite large.
We vote for:

President
US Senate
US Representative

Texas Legislature:

State representative
State Senator
State Supreme Court Judges
State Presiding Judges
State Judges for Criminal Appeals
State Judges for Appeals
District Judges
County Criminal Judges
County Probate Judges
Justices of the Peace
State District Attorney
County Sheriff
Constables
County Attorneys
County Commissioners
County Tax Accessors
Railroad Commissioner
County School Trustees
State Board of Education Members

City and County Propositions

As you can see, it's a lot and takes more than 30 seconds.

I don't want either candidate, but the west will not be known for a long while. Then there are the mail-ins, service persons votes, etc. It is way too early to try and predict an outcome.
I just know that my candidate will not win, but I didn't feel like I needed to shower after I voted either.
Someday, the USA will wake up and actually work towards the betterment of our country. Just not sure when that will be or if in my lifetime. Until then, it's "divide, hate, destroy" as the new USA motto, and that's BOTH major parties.

I understand this but surely the bigger issue of reproductive rights overshadows everything? I wonder it has all got mixed up in the poisonous gender debate that seems to have reduced recently in UK

Kibble29 · 06/11/2024 02:03

Short odds mean it’s more likely to happen. For example, Manchester City would have very short odds in a game against Fleetwood Town because they’re much better.

With Trump’s 3/10 odds, for every £10 you bet, you win £3 if that outcome happens. So £20 will get you £6 and so on. You need to gamble high to win low because the bookie thinks it’s a dead cert.

Harris’ odds of 5/2 means you place £2 and you’ll win £5. £4 will get you £10.

So the £10 bet that wins you £3 for Trump would win you £50 for Harris.

Essentially, the bookies say he’ll be the winner.

I think many people will win money then. If it's this close now, when the west starts adding in, it won't be close. Either way, the choice was the "lesser of two weevils", again.

Because it is a huge issue. Males have no place in female spaces. How is it poisonous? It's a biological fact, males cannot be females.
As far as I'm aware each state has it's own abortion laws.

To add to than in Illinois we had a few referendum questions as well eg on property tax increases and others things plus water board and education board elections in Chicago.

This was my first time voting given I only naturalized last year and I definitely wasn't expecting to vote on that many things in one go. Thankfully I utilized early voting which was quick and painless.

@ipredictariot5 he will not allow males infiltrate female sports anymore or female spaces, toilets or prisons.

Will he really care though?!

I’m as gender critical as they come but I think Biden has already signed in some damaging gender legislation, and I’m not sure Harris can make it a lot worse.

I believe that Trump might talk it up but stopping trans identified individuals in women’s sports, bathrooms etc relies on Trump making that a priority issue, and I don’t think he gives a flying fuck about women. Unless he can sexually assault them, of course.

Trump would be an absolute disaster for women in so many ways, and he’s just an awful, terrible human.

He’s been banging on about getting migrants to wrestle UFC stars. The things he’s said go way beyond tribal politics - he’s deeply corrupt, lies every time he opens his mouth, and bullies anyone who doesn’t enable him.

I can’t even begin to describe the despair I feel at the thought of a man like him being voted in again. The Republicans cared more about winning than putting up a candidate who was worthy of being president.

The man encouraged and enabled a fucking riot for god’s sake. I don’t know what else he has to do to show how deeply unfit he is for any level of office.

It certainly looks better from trump

What do Americans see in him that we don't?

This American who lives there, remembers a good economy and more secure U.S-Mexico border.

Why the focus on Georgia? Pennsylvania is more to watch.

There are 7 main 'swing states', that means each election they switch- whereas other states pretty much stay the same. The swing states theoretically could 'change the result'.

The google election thing here shows the 'swing states' down the side.

Each state has a different amount of seats - so some swing states are worth 15 others worth 5..

The FT election thing here shows 'what the state was' and 'what it is now - and the number of 'seats' by boxes

I think a few years ago Hilary got 'more votes' but 'less seats', so - it might not be clear for a while.

I am scared for the erosion of women's rights - as where they lead we follow

You would be wrong. A lot of Trump’s political ads were attacking Harris over her transgender issues, for example her policy making taxpayer’s fund gender affirming care and surgeries, including a law providing transgender care for incarcerated illegal immigrants.

Trump said on “day one” he would reverse the Biden administration’s expansion of Title IX that will prohibit federally funded schools from preventing transgender students from using bathrooms, locker rooms and pronouns that align with their gender identities.

Trump said he would sign an executive order to cut federal funding for schools pushing transgender insanity on our children.”

In January, he released a video detailing a range of policies targeting gender-affirming care for minors, including pressing Congress to approve a federal ban and several measures to restrict federal funding when it came to trans issues.

Trump said he would block doctors who provide gender-affirming care from Medicare and Medicaid, forbid federal agencies from actions to “promote the concept of sforbid federal agencies from actions to “promote the concept of sex and gender transition at any age,” and task the Justice Department with investigating the medical industry to see if they “deliberately covered up horrific long-term side effects of sex transitions in order to get rich.”

In the video, Trump laid out additional plans for extending the restrictions to schools, promising “severe consequences,” including potential civil rights violations, for educators who “suggest to a child they could be trapped in the wrong body.”

In 2022 Trump told a crowd in Texas he would ban transgender individuals from competing in women’s sports, and attacked transgender swimmer Lia Thomas, weeks after her hotly debated record-breaking swim meet in Ohio while she was competing on the University of Pennsylvania swim team.

He has clearly outlined his plan against gender insanity.

If he gets in I really hope he acts on this ASAP. Kamala is very pro the trans ideology

SecretWitch · 06/11/2024 03:28

I'm in Indiana and this state has been declared a Trump victory

I'm so sad and disheartened

Fingers crossed that Kamala pulls this off.

I am the mother of a child who is gay and I'm very frightened for him ( although he does live in Massachusetts which is a strong blue state)

I'm sad that i have to be afraid for my kiddo. I guess I'll be flying out to see him rather than have him visit me here

Yeah, Trump says a lot though.

If I recall correctly he also said he was going to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it.

The trouble is that you can’t trust a word that man says.

Don't get me wrong, I’m deeply unhappy with the Dems approach to trans/gender ideology. I just don’t think that Trump is the saviour you think he is.

And that’s without even taking into account all of the other ways he’s harmful to women and girls. A rampant misogynist in office is never going to be looking out for women’s rights.

You think I’m wrong.

I think you’re wrong to trust a proven liar.

@SpidersAreShitheads (lol at your name. Aww I like spiders! )

Mexico paid for the wall he did build with tariffs. Unfortunately Dems fought Trump against the wall by taking him to court at every turn, just like they have taken Gov Abbott to court over everything he tries to do to protect his border. (The same border wall that Pres Clinton built, the same wall that the Obama/Biden administration also built. It only became horrific when Trump wanted to finish it.)

Edited

Trump built a tiny portion of the wall, and he didn’t manage to get Mexico to pay for it with tariffs either - although you’re right, he did say he would do. Mexico did a national announcement saying they wouldn’t be paying a tariff.

You can’t pin it on the Dems. He was unequivocal about building a great big wall (which he didn’t) and he said he’d make Mexico pay for all of it (he didn’t do this either). He was full of bluster about making Mexico pay - which ultimately he couldn’t do. He’s since tried to rewrite the script, as he does, claiming that he’d make them pay for a “piece” of the wall which is definitely not the case. He said they’d pay for it all.

But really, this is just one example. He lies every time he opens his mouth. He’s been banging on tonight about police being on the way in Pennsylvania because of voter fraud.

It’s wild. It’s like he doesn’t even consider the truth every time he speaks. The truth doesn’t matter to him. It’s an irrelevance.

I do hope that he prioritises women’s rights and protects single sex spaces etc. That would be at least one benefit to such a dreadful person as President. I just don’t believe that he will because he only cares about what benefits him. He’s used gender ideology to beat Harris with as he knows it’s controversial and the tide is starting to turn. But do I think he actually cares? Absolutely not.

I wish I liked spiders but they terrify me and they seem to seek me out - you are welcome to them 😂 My only saving grace is that at least we don’t have any dangerous ones here!

Gunnersforthecup · 06/11/2024 04:19

From the New York Times:

For the first time tonight, we consider Trump likely to win the presidency. He has an advantage in each of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. To win, Harris would need to sweep all three. There is still a lot of vote left, but in the voting so far, Trump is narrowly but discernibly ahead.

Wow. My 16 yo dd thinks there is no way the US is voting in a black female president. Either candidate is scary for different reasons. Really not looking forward to the result.

SpidersAreShitheads · 06/11/2024 04:31

Yeah, it’s not looking good for Harris. Trump is ahead in key areas and there are lots of combinations that would lead to him winning.

I can’t see Harris getting the results she needs, as it stands.
