There's only one floating pile of garbage in this story and it lives in Mar a Lago.

To Kamala Harris and all the other Democratic candidates on the ballot - May your courage, determination and hard work bring you the success you deserve. ❤️
To Donald (Jessica) Trump - May you get everything you deserve... and then some.

I think everyone needs to get the collective stick out of their arses.

he didn’t start one war, and he’s the only murican president in history not to do that.

i hope he wins.

He was/is too busy encouraging a war in his own country.

I just listened to a forrin podcast about the vote.
they said the candidates are irrelevant, could just as well be between a chair and a cup of tea. pest & cholera.

both are horrible options when it comes to women's rights.

So, apart from the no external wars thing (his administration did set a really fucked up Afghanistan withdrawal timeline), what do you like about him?

Can I assume you actually know the word is foreign and you are using 'forrin' as a previous poster used 'murican'?

And do you mean foreign as in, you are not in the US and it was a US podcast, or that you are in the US and have listened to one from outside? And specifically what podcast was it? It's difficult to rate its credibility with no actual information.

I don't know how accurate the Times polling has been in past years. I hope this is not giving false hope?
https://www.thetimes.com/world/us-world/article/us-election-2024-swing-state-polls-c8r398mnf
(I hope this doesn't turn out to be behind a pay-wall, if it is and anyone is interested, I'll copy and paste it on here if asked.)

When I checked the betting odds - Trump is the favourite by a wide margin. Despite the criticism of Trump a huge swathe of people are voting for him. Many have felt their views have been ignored over the years and for good or ill he has latched on to this. It will be awful to see Trump elected, but sadly American politics are polarised (as indeed world politics have become). For those individuals who support policies that reflect their views they have to take the good and ill of the
Presidential candidate who will forward those policies.
The issue is also bedevilled with the issue of a personality cult of Trump but then this is part of the late 20th and early 21st century way of life elevating pop stars, actors, influencers, and politicians to Demigod status.

What do you think of him performing a blowjob on a microphone in front of the world at his rally yesterday?
Do you think that is appropriate for the President of the United States, if he should win? 🤮
Yet again America will be a laughing stock if he does.

He was elected in 2016 despite his disgusting "grab em by the pussy" remarks and his disgraceful mockery of the disabled journalist, both of which, amongst many other things, had things been normal, should have eliminated him from making any progress at all. But no. This is why I won't be surprised at all if he is re-elected. Disappointed, sad for democracy, yes, but not surprised.

No serious political analyst is putting stock in the betting markets as a predictor.

Does anyone else get a feeling this thread may have been "discovered"? There are a couple of threads I am on which suffered in this way, and in the end the noise tended to drown out the signal; DNFTT is a good motto, perhaps.

DuncinToffee · 02/11/2024 17:42

It's to be expected. The run up to the UK general election was the same as well as the farage riot threads.

I like DNFTT

Here's hoping that these Trump threads will soon die a natural death. But even if things go the way we want, we won't be able to fully exhale in relief until after Jan 6th Shock

I haven't listened to this yet

https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/special-report-a-war-on-women-floridas-abortion-crisis/id1640878689?i=1000675378924

The Abortion Crisis in Florida. The story of how religious groups, with the connivance and support of the state, are lying to vulnerable women, promising to “reverse” abortions, and endangering lives.

What's going on in Florida and elsewhere has all the hallmarks of fundamentalism, if not an outright inquisition. It's the story of how a dogmatic minority has corrupted a political system. It isn't just that abortion is virtually banned in these places, it's that the agencies of the state are being used to endanger women and harass institutions in ways which are not properly reported.

There’s lots more to come on this, including a full film report. It’s one of the most disturbing stories/investigations I’ve worked on. An at times dystopian war on women.

No serious political analyst is putting stock in the betting markets as a predictor.

It almost seems as if my method of warding myself in the event of a Trump victory (as suggested on the previous thread) might be more common than expected, somehow.

grannycake · 02/11/2024 18:20

@DuncinToffee

I listened to the podcast this am. It was eye opening and horrifying.

AcrossthePond55 · 02/11/2024 18:21

"The story of how religious groups, with the connivance and support of the state, are lying to vulnerable women, promising to “reverse” abortions, and endangering lives."

They what, now? If someone is using abortion 'regret' for political gain, that's actually sick.

You're right, of course. Sometimes I can't resist.

He didn’t. The Biden administration was responsible for the Afghanistan withdrawal. Trump was out power by then.

Reposting @TomPinch comment from the end of the previous thread. (Hope that's ok Tom 🙂)

Interesting.

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/nov/02/harris-unexpected-lead-over-trump-iowa-selzer-pollwww.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/nov/02/harris-unexpected-lead-over-trump-iowa-selzer-poll

If Trump is genuinely struggling in Iowa he's in trouble and the pollster is considered a good one.

538 presently has Trump winning 270 electoral college votes to Harris's ... 268.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2024-election-forecast/?cid=rrpromo

The polls over the last couple of weeks showed a shift towards Trump but now they show a shift back again.
According to 538 Trump will win Iowa by 9% so maybe the above is a rogue poll.

Thank you @Spandauer for the redirect to the new thread.

As I posted on the last one:

Phew! I found you all just ahead of the election. Fortunately someone had posted a link in a quiet thread in Politics. I knew you’d all still be tucked away somewhere on MN documenting and commenting assiduously. It’s been so long since I last checked in I couldn’t remember where you’d hunkered down.

I was an avid lurker and infrequent poster prior to/post the 2016 election. These threads are an amazing resource - thank you.

I am off work at the mo so able to keep stupid hours and follow the results live this time. I’ll be keeping up with the thread, even if I’m not posting much.

The Trump administration negotiated the withdrawal with the Taliban, excluding the Afghan government.
