There's only one floating pile of garbage in this story and it lives in Mar a Lago.

To Kamala Harris and all the other Democratic candidates on the ballot - May your courage, determination and hard work bring you the success you deserve. ❤️
To Donald (Jessica) Trump - May you get everything you deserve... and then some.

Dozens of black Americans have received text messages telling them they had been "selected" to pick cotton "at the nearest plantation"

Looking forward to a slew of presidential pardons - there's probably money to be made betting on things like how many and the like.

All Trump needs to do. come January is order the execution (no trial needed) of whoever he likes, and then pardon the killers. He won't actually need a pardon as I understand he would have immunity.

There could be an appeal to SCOTUS, but they appear to have set their stall out early.

Ironic really. A country founded on the absolute loathing of tyranny descends into tyranny.

Ancient Romans must be looking down on high with a sense of smugness that at least their republic lasted more than two and a bit centuries.

Pray for the Sabine women. History rhymes, remember.

PerkingFaintly · 09/11/2024 16:22

Thanks, I'm not on Twitter and can't see the comments. Would you be kind enough to give us a flavour?

PerkingFaintly · 09/11/2024 16:23

Sorry, that was to @DuncinToffee about the Led By Donkeys video on Musk's history with Twitter.

Talkinpeace · 09/11/2024 16:27

@PerkingFaintly
Everybody will see a different set due to the twitter algorithm
but LOTS along the lines of

Isn’t it great?! Now where is your campaign for the elderly who have lost their winter fuel payments?

nothing to do with the US electorate being completely fed up with 4 long years of the worst government in history then ??

And yet here you are. With your blue tick. Making absolute clowns of yourselves.

My memory might be failing me, but I was in England for the Brexit referendum , though I wasn't allowed to vote as I'd lived abroad for too long, and those racist texts remind me of the people who, I seem to remember, gathered in one of the London suburbs telling a group of people who were not white (and therefore quite probably not European, so supposedly not affected by Brexit, if you see what I mean) to leave the country immediately and go home because that was what Brexit was about. I can't remember if they hurled stones as well as insults, but it was a nasty incident. They'd been given the permission to be racist which they had had to keep quiet about since the UK joined the EU.

PerkingFaintly · 09/11/2024 16:37

Thanks, @Talkinpeace . So, that's given a flavour of what the algorithm thinks will press your buttons, then!Grin

Thank you for taking one for the team and doing that!

SerendipityJane · 09/11/2024 16:37

As a counter to the hysteria (bearing in mind where there is hysteria there is money for media to be made, so it's worth being a little removed from the headlines) here's an interesting read.

So to balance my own previous post, there is a long held belief that the founding fathers foresaw Trump and did their best to ensure it wouldn't be so easy for the US to succumb to royalist fervour. Bearing in mind they also had the teaching of history as well as their own times.

Expert explains why Trump’s goal of expanding presidential power is 'not going to happen'

One major element of the far-right Heritage Foundation's authoritarian Project 2025 document has been helping the next Republican administration dramatically expand executive power. But one expert isn't so sure it will be easy for President-elect Donal...

I saw those same comments, too, @PerkingFaintly. I didn't get much further as I decided it was probably about time I left that particular branch of social media, as the fury and hatred that continues there from MAGA type people, despite the fact they've got what they wanted, just depresses me too much.

Talkinpeace · 09/11/2024 16:55

The joke is @Jaichangecentfoisdenom and @PerkingFaintly
that the top comment was by Kellie Jay Keen
who got VERY cross with those of us who refused to vote for Trump DESPITE the gender issue 😀

PerkingFaintly · 09/11/2024 17:34

Really? The comment: "Isn’t it great?! Now where is your campaign for the elderly who have lost their winter fuel payments?"

I wonder if the "Isn't it great!" is about Trump's win, or about Elon Musk's behaviour with Xwitter?

That piece is mostly about Musk and lays out very clearly how he uses his money and position to suppress free speech that criticises him.

Also the extent to which he uses it as a bully pulpit not just to express his own opinion but to spread factual falsehoods.

I hadn't realised he'd changed the algorithm to artificially boost his own tweets... in a fit of pique at more people liking Biden's praise for a football team than liking Musk's praise for the team. What was it you said earlier hoping the conversation would become more grown-up?!!!! We're dooomed... <Private Frazer voice>

DuncinToffee · 09/11/2024 17:39

These are the first comments that showed for me.

I usually scroll past the blue ticks but it now the list gets considerably longer. I am trying bluesky for a change.

I've considered Bluesky but as with the mass exodus to random other sites when Musk bought Twitter, wonder if it will last

Talkinpeace · 09/11/2024 17:55

@PerkingFaintly I love it when Elon gets community noted - happens quite often

I will use both sites for now and see how it goes. I use it to read not to post anyway.

I also tried mastodon but didn't really get on with it, haven't tried threads yet.

CaveMum · 09/11/2024 18:01

Did anyone come up with a title for the next thread? We’re not far off needing a new one. Do we go jokey (in a “if you don’t laugh you’ll cry” scenario) or serious?

DuncinToffee · 09/11/2024 18:02

Humour gets my vote

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 09/11/2024 18:03

The Grown-Ups have left the building - Here comes Santa Trump.

At President Biden’s invitation, President Biden and President-elect Trump will meet in the Oval Office on Wednesday at 11:00 am.
Additional details to follow.

Talkinpeace · 09/11/2024 18:16

There are not enough popcorn emojis for that one.

I'd better not comment on it though as I tweet under my real name !

Spandauer · 09/11/2024 18:32

Been out all day. Will start a new thread shortly.

I go between new titles of "As we descend into 4 years of madness" and "2 years til the MidTerms" not knowing if despair or optimism should prevail.

But then again I'm also going between the chocolate jar and the gin bottle and can't make that decision either. At least with those I can choose both!
