There's only one floating pile of garbage in this story and it lives in Mar a Lago.

To Kamala Harris and all the other Democratic candidates on the ballot - May your courage, determination and hard work bring you the success you deserve. ❤️
To Donald (Jessica) Trump - May you get everything you deserve... and then some.

Is it insane to take a day of annual leave to watch CNN without cease 😂

MorrisZapp · 03/11/2024 15:10

Why do big celebrity names wait so long to endorse? Is it because they get more engagement the closer it is to the vote? Taylor Swift endorsing feels like it happened last year.

I love the fact that supporters of both candidates think she is on their side

If you're in the UK, I'd work Tuesday and take Wednesday off to recover. There won't be anything to really know until about 2am GMT.

I've made a fundamental mistake and somehow ended up scheduling an important, in-person meeting at which I have to do a presentation and pretend to understand budget figures on Wednesday at 10am. Seriously, seriously kicking myself.

Just checking into this thread as it seems to be a good source of information. I’m still not daring to let myself hope for a Trump defeat - waking to a text from my DS “USA, what have you done?” in 2016 is still very fresh in my mind.

I’ve just seen a Harris endorsement ad from the cast of the West Wing and I seem to have something in my eye.

<Sniff> I’m part way through a rewatch (If I say Sam just got his ass kicked by a girl, you’ll know where I am).

AcrossthePond55 · 03/11/2024 16:44

Maybe it's because I've paid attention to UK issues & scandals that Trump's new slogan amuses me with its tone deafness. I suppose to the rank and file American Citizen it means nothing beyond the actual words

Note: I'm not trying to diminish the Saville scandal at all by saying I'm 'amused'.

Trump will fix it could be read in a number of ways. Given past performance, “it” could be “the election.”

A question regarding abortion and how it's legislated for in the US:

As I understand it, once Roe v Wade was overturned, abortion was no longer considered to be a constitutional right. Regulation of it was instead a matter for each state (similar to how is it's a matter for Westminster to legislate for in the UK).

If that's so, would the presidential election be less important then elections to state legislatures?

Actual federal legislation is proposed by Senators and Representatives in their respective Congressional Houses. And federal law supersedes state law. A POTUS can have great influence on whether or not federal legislation passes. And what we need is legislation to 'enshrine' a woman's right to choose within federal law. A Harris presidency can lobby and 'push' both sides for that legislation. And can communicate the need for that legislation to the American public at large.

The POTUS is a powerful tool to push a political agenda, any party's agenda. So voting for your candidate not only helps get legislation 'done', it can prevent it too.

The thing to remember, too, is that although right now we're fighting for a woman's right to choose what to do with her own body, by extension at some point it may also affect a man's right to direct his own healthcare.

Ds is taking the whole week off to follow the election. Shock

He's got a PIR degree and did a white board to follow the electoral college while he was at Uni 4 years ago: this was at 3:50am on 4 November 2020, with the comment "This is still worrying" - fortunately ultimately it worked out but not for want of Trump attempting shenanigans Hmm and he'll be worse this time Sad

He now works in Public Affairs - fortunately there isn't too much going on in the UK at the moment Wink

That's great @Talkinpeace very funny

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/11/2024 17:39

I wonder whether the ones who got bored and wandered away whilst he was talking will still bother to vote for him, or will they just go in to work instead and not go to the polling booths?

BustingBaoBun · 03/11/2024 17:41

@prettybird Wow your son is clever! Will he do the same next week?

That's great @Talkinpeace but ye gods am I sick to death of him droning on and on... I can't believe we are going through this again...

prettybird · 03/11/2024 17:45

Yes @BustingBaoBun - I think he's buying a new white board especially Grin

Talkinpeace · 03/11/2024 17:48

@BustingBaoBun I watch most videos with the sound off. I put that one on loud for the few seconds needed and then enjoyed the panning in silence

@prettybird Does your boy have a gut feeling ?

AcrossthePond55 · 03/11/2024 17:49

Gotta love that whiteboard, @prettybird

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 03/11/2024 17:55

@AcrossthePond55 - funnily enough, I only spotted that slogan yesterday and immediately made the same correlation as you. We were living in the Middle East when the Savile news hit the headlines, and noticed that a maintenance company whose vans were seen all around the city, very quickly changed their name from "Jim'll Fix It" to something a bit more innocuous..

Wallaw · 03/11/2024 17:58

Is your son Steve Kornacki!!??? 😂

Just joking - that's great, @prettybird. Please share any conclusions- as you can tell, we're all desperate for good news here.

That video is hilarious @Talkinpeace. The people who are there look almost comatose, too. When I turned the sound on, the dog, who was napping on the sofa next to me, got up, glared at me and left to join DH and sons watching the Chelsea match in the tv room. I think it's safe to say she was not impressed.
