I’m scared now I’ve realised this

I was thinking that the US public wouldn’t vote for Trump now that it is so apparent he is such a fascist. It’s terrifying to realise that they already know that and that is why they are going to vote for him.
I’m scared for the world.

The democrats have helped create this situation. They should have been developing suitable candidates to stand against Trump. And their obsession with shoehorning drag queens into many of their political events and their support of trans people in senior positions that they don’t appear the most qualified for is handing Trump an area where he looks like the sane person to majority of voters.

Harris and Walz had a six year old drag Queen perform at a rally ffs https://www.reddit.com/r/KamalaCringe/s/wrtEYOGxab

I'm just sorry for all the people in America who aren't idiots. Say what you like about the UK (and Ireland where I'm from) but you wouldn't get away with that shit here.

CeibaTree · 29/10/2024 17:11

I would also be worried as a woman to vote for Harris. She is a full proponent of the gender ideology which supports child mutilation and sterilisation; and believes men should be able to invade women's single sex spaces on a whim. Neither candidate is a candidate for women sadly.

And the ease with which the Democrats dismantled title 9 without a thought or care for the impact on women and girls' sporting opportunity and educations (often linked to valuable sports scholarships).

Neither party is good for women and girls.

It's horrendous.

NomenNudum · 29/10/2024 17:15

The risk is that he’s so disinterested he lets the Project 25 nutters run wild.

More likely he dies / is forced to step down on health grounds and Vance takes over and goes full-on fascist nutter.

I'm an American who is NOT voting for Trump. They don't run the election by number of votes, it is run by geographical location/seats, called the electoral college. States like NYC/CA will always vote democratic, the deep south/mid west is largely republican. The swing states are TBD. There are a number of issues:

  1. Kamala Harris is having a moment because everyone was ready to be done with Biden. The problem is that she was massively dislikable prior to this transition and a lot of people have not forgotten this.
  2. Businesses received huge tax cuts under Trump, and a lot of people think that it aided the overall economy.
  3. There is a large population in the swing states who are sexist and racist. You would be asking them to vote for a half south asian, half black woman which basically goes against all their beliefs. Being very clear, they are wrong on their stance, but it is unlikely to be changed.
  4. There are lots of black, asian, latino individuals, and woman who will vote for Trump (mindblowing). There is a lot of racism between the races, mass hatred, and other factors driving this.
  5. Anyone in the US right now is massively election fatigued. This has been going on for almost a year. I dread to think what happens if Trump wins, I dread to think of the riots if he doesnt.
  6. Those who will vote Trump will. Those who will vote Kamala will. They are known and cannot be swung. The unknown contingent either won't vote, or they won't tell pollsters re. decisions, so the polling really is mostly garbage and only tells us the loud and proud supporters of one party or another.
  7. The Dailyfail is garbage reporting and is trying to fearmonger headlines, so are a lot of other outlets.
  8. The political parties are actively saying they will lose to try to get the unknown contingent people to vote for them.
  9. Voting will take at least a week-10 days after the election to be known. There will be legal challenges in several areas. One state is insisting on hand counting. The results will not be immediate.

One of the more odious things about trump is when he said that he fancied his own daughter

And there is that famous clip of him looking at a ten year old girl on an escalator and saying "see her? in 10 years time I'll be dating her"

Not now but didn't former taoiseach of ireland, Berite Ahern, have to answer to a court tribunal, for accepting money and backhanders from people.

GogAndMagog · 29/10/2024 17:20

Looking back at previous fascist dictators, we wonder used to wonder how, why.

Still here now in 2024 wondering how, why. 😢

If he gets in I'm placing a ban on tv news programmes as he will be on every day and I just don't want him and his idealogy in my headspace/ face.

On a light note:

Did anyone see the musical remixes they did of trumps "theyre eating dogs and cats" comment.

They're on YouTube. Very funny!

They are hilarious, Trump is a vile despicable racist mysoginustic horror but I did laugh at that. There was sone brilliant stuff on Instagram as well, and one of my mates sent me a photo of her cat asleep in a casserole dish!

Chenecinquantecinq · 29/10/2024 17:22

I'm also an American who is not voting for Trump. This is a good summary of the situation. The only thing I would add is that people have genuine policy disagreements with Biden and Harris, and there have been things done during their administration that haven't gone well at all, like immigration, the cost of living, the withdrawal from Afghanistan, etc. They are not above criticism.

Carouselfish · 29/10/2024 17:23

All my deep south fam are voting for him. They like that he is a businessman and think he's practical. They want the wall built and immigrants out. The conviction for sexual assault and indeed anything else said against him they think are lies. They only watch Fox News. That's the main problem, that the news sources are totally biased.
(I'm a leftie Brit, though admittedly more centrist with recent nonsense. We don't talk politics!!)

Its definitely not looking good.

Im scared for women in the USA

This

And......

LGBTQ
non whites
Hispanics
those of differing political viewpoints
those who are viewed to have entered illegally
Ukraine and our Ukrainian family - will they have anything to go back to.

Panorama last night was both depressing and worrying.

His antics make Boris seem perfectly normal, decent, honest etc.

snoopsy · 29/10/2024 17:27

Just look at the amount of Americans who have followed religious leaders with extreme views for years. The landscape is perfect for someone of the same ilk. A nation populated by a whole swathe of brainwashed easily-led people. Its very scary.

ruethewhirl · 29/10/2024 17:27

Same here, OP. It's absolutely chilling. And I can't even begin to fathom what kind of person would vote for such a vile human being, let alone in great numbers.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 29/10/2024 17:28

KizzyDora · 29/10/2024 15:57

Surely people are voting for the party they feel has the best polices and not actually just for Trump?

Yes, exactly what happened when Boris became PM.

Yes, there were a few idiots who wanted him as PM, but most people who voted Tory did not.

Hadalifeonce · 29/10/2024 17:28

Pickandmixmood · 29/10/2024 16:26

Similar, in that it depends how the votes are distributed amongst the constituencies to how many seats in parliament a party will end up with. In theory, if there were only 2 parties, a party could get 49.9% of the votes in each constituency but get no seats in parliament at all.

But it isn't similar, they are not voting for 650 MPs, they are choosing between 2 candidates, like a referendum, but with some people's vote counting more that another person's.

Birdscratch · 29/10/2024 17:30

He can do or say anything he wants and half of US voters will still support him. I don’t understand it but he’s going to get in.

Onlyonekenobe · 29/10/2024 17:33

Some are saying that given how entrenched the vast majority of voters are, including in the swing states, really it comes down to around 40,000 voters in the swing states of Pennsylvania and Georgia who are going to decide this. I'm not so sure, but it's possible.

I think there will be legal wrangling (remember 2000 with Bush v Gore, hanging chads etc in Florida? It'll be that, but lawless and interminable and probably with loss of life if Trump doesn't decisively win).

Emmascout1774 · 29/10/2024 17:34

NomenNudum · 29/10/2024 17:12

Not quite the same. The number of seats isn’t proportional to the number of votes. Our system really hurts smaller parties. However the party with the largest number of votes will, barring something completely unexpected, get the largest number of seats.

spuddy4 · 29/10/2024 17:34

I don't think we are in any position to judge another countries election outcome given the shower of shit we've fielded the past few times.

It will totally come down to the swing states. In 2016 Clinton visited six states over thirty times. Other states she didn’t visit once, but won by a landslide in.

RobinEllacotStrike · 29/10/2024 17:36

I've just spent a few days with 2 women from Georgia which is a swing state.

Neither of them are racist or misogynistic.

They are hugely pissed with the Biden Administration and cannot stand Harris - they do not trust her at all. So they are both voting for Trump depite being pro-choice. They see the whole election as a bit of a shit sandwich with Trump being the lunatic they will vote for.

I hoped we would have learnt post Brexit and the first Trump presidency not to demonise ordinary people, but it seems not.

I don’t think, whatever you think of Johnson, truss, sunak et al, that they were even remotely close to trump in terms of how terrible they were.
