I’m scared now I’ve realised this

I was thinking that the US public wouldn’t vote for Trump now that it is so apparent he is such a fascist. It’s terrifying to realise that they already know that and that is why they are going to vote for him.
I’m scared for the world.

I disagree. I thought Kamala Harris has come across very well, in all of her speeches and discussions.

Trump, on the other hand, has come across terribly as usual.

Do you remember when he was talking about people eating cats and dogs.

Edited

Really? I have been watching her journey because I was really rooting for her, but I have been left disappointed.

In my opinion she doesn't come across well at all. She rambles and doesn't get to the point and seems quite jumbled and confused. Some of her answers to things and her manner has been odd at times.

I hope more people agree with you than me!!

(Obviously Trump comes a cross terribly. I just had high hopes for her.)

Its really interesting to listen to why people will vote for him they are no all white old gun totting southerners

Many believe he will not act on all he spouts about (even political commentators question this) I think this has really helped him that it is known he would rather be on the golf course than sitting in endless meetings

What we may view as a reason to absolutely not vote for Trump many will overlook or justify, this always happens in politics but rarely with such extremes

I really hope Harris wins and it is a clear win but the US I am not sure it will be such a clear win for her though

Yeah, I mean I think it’s fair to say that most people don’t actually believe he’s going to do these mass deportations he’s talking about and they’re probably right because if he does it’ll crash the economies of several key states.

The risk is that he’s so disinterested he lets the Project 25 nutters run wild.

The Bulwark podcast ( “never Trump” Republican narrative) made the point that worryingly a lot of the checks and balances that existed in 2016-20 that stopped him acting on his worst ideas have been weakened or eliminated.

sofialiliy11 · 29/10/2024 16:57

Ugh i can't deal with another trump era if he gets in again.

I felt like the whole world got influenced, and got nastier and more racist, when he got in last time.

He brought all the racists and misogynists out

Eh? I've watched all her speeches and interviews and there's maybe one or two that aren't as strong as the rest but she literally never rambles or seems confused. If you think she seems jumbled and confused presumably you can't follow more than a sentence of Trump's at all.

Yeh I thought that she spoke intelligently and eloquently

lifeturnsonadime · 29/10/2024 17:00

As ever I think we should consider what are the democrats doing that is so wrong that it makes Trump a viable alternative?

Things don't happen in a vacuum a lot of people in the US must be deeply dissatisfied with the democrat administration.

There is at least one issue I can think of on which they make Trump look sane which is truly frightening.

sofialiliy11 · 29/10/2024 17:01

On a light note:

Did anyone see the musical remixes they did of trumps "theyre eating dogs and cats" comment.

They're on YouTube. Very funny!

user1492757084 · 29/10/2024 17:01

There are many low wage earners and down trodden Americans who see Trump as someone who puts all Americans first, before immigrants etc..

He seems to bring a glimmer of hope to many.

I don't agree with most of his thinking but I see why some people latch onto him.

What are American people in the street saying, about why they will vote for him?

MzHz · 29/10/2024 17:01

I’m landing only days after the Tuesday

spending a couple of weeks in us - east and west coast

mildly terrified tbh..

if they actually fall for this BS, I’m not sure what hope there.

sofialiliy11 · 29/10/2024 16:32

I was just looking online.

There was a study done this year.

It said that 64 per cent of Americans surveyed want the electoral college system to stop. They think that the winner of the popular vote should win

Edited

The problem is that the popular vote system would massively disadvantage the more rural, less populated, and usually poorer states. The fact is that the United States is a genuinely federal country so the states must all have meaningful representation- that’s important in a way that it’s just not in a non federal system but similar to the way that Scotland felt it was always being ignored by Westminster. The reason for the discrepancy in votes per state is roughly based on population size but actually it’s the other way to your previous comment- at the moment the states with higher populations ( eg California) have disproportionality fewer votes than somewhere like Nebraska. The only way to marry the popular vote and the state vote is to do it either “one state, one vote” which would be a bit crazy or weight it strictly on population but then the poorer states get sidelined.

Nanny0gg · 29/10/2024 17:04

I wonder if it's largely down to racism and misogyny

They coped with Obama but black and a woman is a step too far?

(I'd like to think I'm wrong, but...)

MissConductUS · 29/10/2024 17:05

No they are voting purely for Trump

And you know this how? American asking.

Emmascout1774 · 29/10/2024 17:07

Pickandmixmood · 29/10/2024 16:18

We have the same in the UK though with our FPTP system.

No it’s pretty much mathematically impossible for one party to have more votes than the winning party in this country. You can’t really compare. In the USA there are only two candidates, the two party system is so entrenched. In this country we have more of a plurality of parties.

CustardCreams2 · 29/10/2024 17:07

Trump isn’t taking away women’s reproductive rights. He said he would leave it to the states to decide themselves re abortion.
Trump isn’t great but Harris is intellectually challenged enough that many worry no one would take her or the US seriously anymore.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 29/10/2024 17:07

sofialiliy11 · 29/10/2024 16:22

I just looked it up.

It's not really similiar though is it.

The different states in the USA have different amounts of votes.

For example California has around 50 votes, whereas another state will have only 5 votes.

Edited

First passed the post is not at all similar to the "stupid Americans" 😂

Boomer55 · 29/10/2024 17:08

Americans will do what they feel best for them. They have two useless candidates, and have to make a poor choice. But, up to them.

Startingagainandagain · 29/10/2024 17:09

Trump attracts all the 'religious', gun-loving, racist, xenophobic and misogynist votes and appeals to those who put financial profit above anything else and don't care about the environment or social justice.

Unfortunately that's a large part of the electorate in the US...

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 29/10/2024 17:09

I'm just surprised that people are surprised. Things are turning to total shit all over the place.
After so many years of going forward, things are being hurled backwards. People are strange.

GoldCat255 · 29/10/2024 17:10

Expect a Doomsday Clock move by the end of the year.

sofialiliy11 · 29/10/2024 16:47

Surely they should have some rule, that if you're a convicted criminal you can't run for president

Edited

The problem with that is that it is very easy for fascists and dictators to block their political opponents by convicting them on trumped-up charges (e.g. the Anwar Ibrahim sodomy trials in Malaysia).

CeibaTree · 29/10/2024 17:11

Nanny0gg · 29/10/2024 16:31

What staggers me are the number of women that will vote for him

I would also be worried as a woman to vote for Harris. She is a full proponent of the gender ideology which supports child mutilation and sterilisation; and believes men should be able to invade women's single sex spaces on a whim. Neither candidate is a candidate for women sadly.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 29/10/2024 17:12

Thanks @Mumtobabyhavoc you've explained a lot.
With Trump and Musk together the world will be in a very precarious position.

It's happened a few times in the past century. https://www.electoral-reform.org.uk/more-votes-but-less-seats-surely-youre-joking/

More votes but fewer seats? Surely you’re joking?

Imagine if at the next General Election one party received the most votes, but another – with fewer votes – returned more MPs.It sounds wholly unfair, undemocratic and absurd. But

V0xPopuli · 29/10/2024 17:13

Lifeomars · 29/10/2024 17:13

sofialiliy11 · 29/10/2024 16:08

The Simple answer is some people like misogynistic, racist leaders because they are misogynistic and racist themselves

Absolutely when they see and hear Trump having one of his rants, they see and hear themselves
