Dogs are everywhere?!

I took DS to a university open day today. Two separate families had brought their dog with them! Is this someone I've missed?! Why is this necessary?!

I know! I literally feel like some sort of freak in my neighbourhood because I don't have a dog.

WhatASadLittleLifeJayne · 27/10/2024 19:41

Ugh. I hate how you’re expected to fawn over them too. Dog owners looking at you expecting an interaction when you walk past their cafe table and their dog sniffs you…. 😄 I am v antisocial when it comes to dogs.

At the risk of sounding a bit dim, it seems like there's loads of nervous dogs that can't be left alone and have to be taken everywhere or put in doggy daycare, why weren't there all these nervous dogs 10+ years ago? Were owners just a bit tougher with their pets than they are now or has their been a decline in dog mental health?

Howdotheydothis · 27/10/2024 19:42

I love dogs and I own dogs but I don't want dogs around me when I'm doing my shopping or eating a meal.

MidnightPatrol · 27/10/2024 19:42

Maybe they were service dogs of some kind?

Maybe they had travelled a long way and don’t have someone to look after the dog?

Yep- everywhere.
People are obsessed.
I don't like them in food places- but I think that cafes etc probably don't like to turn them away incase they upset people.

monkeyblonde · 27/10/2024 19:54

I am so here for this! They are allowed in my local John Lewis, brushing past the clothes etc? I mean WTAF?

NoNapsNowPlease · 27/10/2024 19:56

I liked dogs but not anymore. They’re absolutely bloody everywhere and the shit is just everywhere too!!!!!

DeathMetalMum · 27/10/2024 19:57

Absolutely everywhere and 95% of owners just let them invade your space. I don't want dogs I don't know coming near me even if they are on a lead thank you.

I dont go to cafés particularly regularly but I'd avoid any that allow dogs.

Chipsahoy · 27/10/2024 20:00

Because we treat dogs like babies. Honestly people are obsessed with dogs. I have dogs. They live in the barn. They are treated well, they have acres to run, sometimes they go in the car and go up a mountain with the husband. Otherwise, they stay home.

Tinytigertail · 27/10/2024 20:00

I am a dog owner. My dog has no business in a restaurant, in John Lewis or at a bloomin' university open day.

2024onwardsandup · 27/10/2024 20:00

I take my dog everywhere!

(except pharmacies, supermarkets etc).

good dog owners don’t leave their dogs alone for hours on end.

he’s very well behaved. And I don’t take him into places where they say no dogs.

ive always lived in dog friendly places and most shops have dog treats. He’s normally served with a bowl of water before I’m served at cafes/pubs.

lots of studies on how dogs lower humans stress….

ThatsNotMyTeen · 27/10/2024 20:03

I like dogs but I don’t get why people have to take them everywhere these days. We had dogs growing up and left them at home if we were out. Obviously it limits how long you go out for but the first dog was a rescue, she’d been abused and was scared of the car. The second one was too badly behaved to take anywhere. My dad took him to the paper shop once and he ate a tub of cola bottles (which my dad obv paid for) so that was the end of that

A LOT of dogs missed out on essential socialising due to covid.

they missed out on learning to be left alone.

people are learning it's not safe to leave dogs in cars.

nor in gardens

I love dogs, I like having more of them around, but I find that fewer of them approach people for a fuss these days -so i thinks it's largely down to your individual view point on dogs.

@TheKhakiBiscuit Dirty?

NunyaBeeswax · 27/10/2024 20:05

I take my.dog to places he's allowed to go.
I wouldn't try and force my way into places that don't allow him.

There's a couple cafes near me that allows dogs, we go there. Lots of dogs go there. If Cynophobics choose to go where dogs are welcomed and encouraged, well, more fool them.

Used to feel benignly indifferent but now they are bloody everywhere I find them annoying. Plus the expectation everyone has to fawn over them. Tedious

Dogs in John Lewis kitchen section today, grim!

SuePreemly · 27/10/2024 20:08

I don't take mine everywhere, frankly I want some time away from them and it's good for the dog too as I WFH a lot so I don't want clingy hounds!

I sit outside if we are a dog friendly cafes and spend a lot of time working on settle training so we get it enjoy a bit to eat in peace!

rocketgal · 27/10/2024 20:08

I have always owned dogs but I don't think they belong in shops and cafes. It's become ridiculous now, they are literally everywhere. My DM is allergic to most dogs and it's a real problem these days.

As long as they're not making sandwiches & baking cakes, where's the problem?

TheCompactPussycat · 27/10/2024 20:09

I have a dog. I love my dog very much. I enjoy taking her for walks in the countryside. I then enjoy leaving her at home in her bed whenever I go shopping/to cafés/on the bus/generally out and about. I would rather others did the same.

abonymousAnon · 27/10/2024 20:09

Funny enough I was thinking same today! Was having lunch with my kids and a dog charged towards our table! My youngest screamed to be told by the owner “don’t worry! It’s friendly”
