Dogs are everywhere?!

I took DS to a university open day today. Two separate families had brought their dog with them! Is this someone I've missed?! Why is this necessary?!

So there were 2 dogs in your presence? Did they do anything other than just dare to exist?

I love dogs and I own dogs but I don't want dogs around me when I'm doing my shopping or eating a meal.

Same here

BESTAUNTB · 27/10/2024 20:11

I adore dogs but I agree that it’s gone too far. Covid has to be relevant, I don’t recall this many dogs everywhere in 2019 and prior, although GB’s always been a nation of dog lovers.

@AutumnLeaves24 err, because I don't have a dog, I'm scared of dogs and they don't belong in food establishments and shops?

ReshyAmina · 27/10/2024 20:11

They are absolutely everywhere now and it drives me nuts. But what’s even worse are owners who can’t keep them under control. The ones who let them take up the whole pavement or jump on you saying “don’t worry, he’s friendly”.

I don’t give a damn if he’s friendly, keep him the fuck away from me!

Beekeepingmum · 27/10/2024 20:13

Facebook seems to be full of people with dogs complaining about other peoples fireworks. You enslaved the poor animal and made in stay in your house - don't blame others because it is then scared of noise.

At the risk of sounding a bit dim, it seems like there's loads of nervous dogs that can't be left alone and have to be taken everywhere or put in doggy daycare, why weren't there all these nervous dogs 10+ years ago? Were owners just a bit tougher with their pets than they are now or has their been a decline in dog mental health?

Another change is that when I was young many people had a dog to protect their house from burglars. If the family went out the dog was left to guard the house.
Now many dog owners seem scared to leave a dog alone in case the dog gets stolen!!!!

Forflipsake · 27/10/2024 20:14

I was at a shopping village today and found myself saying excuse me to a dog who was sat blocking the aisle while its owners had it on its extended lead but stool 2 metres away. 😵‍💫

I take my dog everywhere!

(except pharmacies, supermarkets etc).

good dog owners don’t leave their dogs alone for hours on end.

he’s very well behaved. And I don’t take him into places where they say no dogs.

ive always lived in dog friendly places and most shops have dog treats. He’s normally served with a bowl of water before I’m served at cafes/pubs.

lots of studies on how dogs lower humans stress….

We don't want your dog on cafes, shops and pubs and I don't need your dog to relieve my stress. Thank you

I know! I literally feel like some sort of freak in my neighbourhood because I don't have a dog.

I have two dogs but there is no way I'd put myself or them through a trip to the shops or a cafe.

It would be hassle for me as I'd be worried about them getting stressed and snapping at a child. They never have but dogs are animals and they do not come with a guarantee.

It would be pretty awful for them, too, I suspect. Too much exposure to smells and sounds that would overwhelm them. Plus I spend a fortune keeping them flea-free as I'm severely allergic to their bites and would not want them picking them up.

Too many pet owners don't keep up with worming or de-fleaing schedules. My friend thinks I'm mad to spend money on medications for this but my dogs deserve to be kept comfortable and healthy. Hers is in poor condition and rubs his bottom on the carpet as he's clearly itching from worms but she thinks it's funny.

Because we treat dogs like babies. Honestly people are obsessed with dogs. I have dogs. They live in the barn. They are treated well, they have acres to run, sometimes they go in the car and go up a mountain with the husband. Otherwise, they stay home.

Funnily enough most people don't have barns or acres of land..

Ambienteamber · 27/10/2024 20:19

I feel the same.
I'm not a pet person really but it seems like I'm in a minority. I just don't understand why you'd want to burden yourself? There's animals outside everywhere you could admire from a distance.. and the bonus being they are mostly living out their free natural lives rather than trapped in a house as entertainment for someone.
The dogs just make me feel a bit sad... once they might have been wolves roaming the forests in a pack. Now they are bred to look ridiculous, have health problems and not even have the intelligence to run away if let go. So docile and upsettingly grateful.
I get some people love them like a member of their family.. but I'd never be able to stop feeling sad every time I looked at them personally.

The usual miseries are here about their favourite subject.

Bring them on I say, I do love a dog. Absolutely brilliant at paving the way for social interaction too, unless you’re an anti dog mumsnetter. But not many of those round these parts, people generally welcome dogs in my town.

CabbagesAndCeilingWax · 27/10/2024 20:22

Someone somewhere decided that dogs must never be left alone for more than about 32 seconds, so now everyone has to bring them everywhere.

Newsenmum · 27/10/2024 20:23

monkeyblonde · 27/10/2024 19:54

I am so here for this! They are allowed in my local John Lewis, brushing past the clothes etc? I mean WTAF?

Noooooo

Not everyone likes dogs, some people are afraid of them. A responsible owner would know that.

And the "friendly" bit? As I said in my previous post, they're animals. They don't come with a safety guarantee.

There's been so many cases in the press where dogs have turned and mauled people they know yet stupid owners will still tell us their dogs are "friendly" and tell us not to worry.

Absolutely everywhere and 95% of owners just let them invade your space. I don't want dogs I don't know coming near me even if they are on a lead thank you.

I dont go to cafés particularly regularly but I'd avoid any that allow dogs.

I’m so sick of them.
was getting changed on the beach earlier after a swim and the last thing you want when you’re hobbling on one leg faffing about with your swimsuit under your towelling robe is for some massive great sloppy dog to start sniffing and nudging you.
seriously!!
just go away!!

I get this but I also think maybe some people shouldn’t have dogs if they haven’t got the space…

shittestusernameever · 27/10/2024 20:26

I was at Cheshire oaks outlet village last weeks and I thought I was at Crufts! Couldn't believe the amount of dogs. I'm not exaggerating, I spotted around 50

2024onwardsandup · 27/10/2024 20:26

You’ll all be livid to know I just travelled through Europe with my dog on trains, in hotels, restaurants and shops. He loved it.

Dogs are amazing. Open your minds and you’ll be amazed how much joy they can bring.

oh just remembered he’s also dined at a Michelin restaurant which will infuriate you all 😁

Live in the barn? Why have dogs if you don't let them in the house?
