Dogs are everywhere?!

I took DS to a university open day today. Two separate families had brought their dog with them! Is this someone I've missed?! Why is this necessary?!

Now if a dog approaches me, I alert the owner to the fact I’m not a dog person. Most people will grab their dogs. Equally, if a child approached me in a restaurant, I’d ask them to go back to their parents, or alert their parents to their child. No way I would entertain them for free.

Well in a way there is a version of this. I’ve had kids approach us in pubs, restaurants or on holiday, then sometimes talking away to us while the parents smile on sweetly when we would like them to just take their kid away so we can resume our socialising. Or kids jumping on chairs around us, going along the windowsill into our booth in a cafe not long ago, again parent saying ’oh he loves to explore’. I remember on holiday a little girl climbing on railings next to our table, we found her mother quite a distance away, she didn’t give a fuck her kid was wandering off and others having to deal with it.

Now you may argue that it’s not all parents, and you would be right, but maybe this will enlighten you to why dog owners are so sick of the dog/dog owner hate on here and keep saying it’s not all of us, but on it goes with people saying they hate all dogs and giving their negative experiences as the universal issues with them.

Well to tramp out the usual dog owner response, if you don't like it, don't go where they let children in.

If everyone took this approach life would be so much simpler and people would be so much less offended. Second guessing, implying stuff, not saying what you mean, martyring yourself resentfully etc leads to soooo many problems. Just say what you mean, everybody!!! Drives me mad.

I like kids, they are funny, love my nieces and nephews, I was just countering your argument. I don’t have strong opinions about dogs or kids, there is room for all of them, we should all just share and mind our own. I like a more live and let live approach to life, but the opinions you get on this site are mental sometimes.

I don't hate dogs but there is a time and a place for them. They should be outside and they should not bark unless there is a very good reason to.

Mines fine inside where he is allowed, thanks

WhatNoRaisins · 03/11/2024 12:50

I think that's how I feel about dogs, they're fine if you want a doggy lifestyle with lots of walking and outdoor time. I don't think dogs should be made to live a human lifestyle being taken to clothes shops and other inappropriate indoor locations.

@FilthMerchant I've seen some awful and inappropriate comments on Mumsnet but well done you "win" with this one.

You’ve come back to laugh at my use of the word debate? And I see you’ve picked someone else up on a typo. Nice you’re enjoying yourself, always good to see lots of 😂😂😂

Not laughing at your use of the word debate, just the fact that you consider this a debate.

I think if cafes and restaurants marketed themselves as no-dog venues they'd do very well, except they would probably face hate from the dog extremists.

There are lots and lots of places that are dog-free - ooh except for service dogs of course! - if somewhere isn't 'dog friendly' you just don't go there if you happen to have a dog with you. Just like if a place isn't 'child friendly' you don't go in there if you have children with you.
It's really not difficult.
Not everyone spews out hate: for example, expecting dogs THAT ARE NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU to live outside and not bark. Now THAT is extreme.

Deathraystare · 03/11/2024 18:32

There was one IN the cafe this morning. It is normally outside!

some people do walk cats. mine goes out in a harness. not for walks, as he doesn't like walking in it, but he loves car trips, and he sometimes enjoys having a sniff about the garden, before retreating to my lap to sun himself.
when I was little, we used to walk our ferrets.

That’s so lovely 😍

OonaStubbs · 03/11/2024 20:23

Cats are nice. They do their own thing. They don't bark or harass people. And people don't generally bring them into what should be human-only spaces.

LOL

My cats harass me far more, and make a lot more noise than my dog does!

😂😂😂 what a thing to say!

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 03/11/2024 20:44

I love dogs, and have always had them. But my dogs do not belong in John Lewis and other retail establishments. They get little enjoyment from browsing the homeware section and would find crowds very stressful. They are happier at home, draped over the furniture, having a sleep until I get back from the shops and take them for a walk.

My in-laws cannot he parted from their dog. It's utterly ridiculous and makes their lives very difficult, with hospital appointments etc.

Of course they harass people! they use people's gardens as toilets, kill wildlife etc I don't have a cat but have to put up with my neighbours cat being a complete pain!

There is a cat who comes into my garden who launches itself at me and my dog. It is very aggressive!

azu · 05/11/2024 23:49

OonaStubbs · 02/11/2024 00:34

Both.

I am more tolerant of service dogs because I have never seen one that is badly behaved.

I am sure all those service dogs are very grateful that you are 'more tolerant' of them than non-service dogs. A collective sigh of relief as they bring their highly offensive wet paws into Costa.

I had to remove my plant pots from the front garden as cats dug them up and used them as a toilet.
