If you were having a new kitchen, what colour would you choose?

I am looking at new kitchens as mine is dated and looking scruffy. I was thinking of an all white gloss modern look but there are such lovely colours available I wonder if I should go for something else. What would you choose if you could have any colour cupboards and worktops?

@HarrietBond I agree olive green would look gorgeous with the black but would be dark, you'd need to balance it with light accessories and have good lighting. Or you could go for a lighter green, I like Little Greene Aquamarine or you could have something like LG Garden or Pea Green. I think a lot of greens will go with black counter tops.

I love the aquamarine colour but it wouldn’t work in our house unfortunately. Our kitchen is open plan to the living room and all our colours are quite rich and autumnal.

I work in this area.

The very on trend kitchens are currently oak, moss green and beige (and white of course but that never really goes out). Still lots of quartz pretending to be marble but also lots of wooden worktops since wood is very on trend but some people don't want wooden cabinet doors.

Dark green

Pumpkittenspice · 25/10/2024 09:13

Choose a colour you love, OP! If you get bored of a colour, you can always paint the cupboard doors.

My kitchen is forest green, which we love. I’ve heard that it’s outdated now, but we don’t care! Unpopular opinion on here, but I love a navy kitchen too.

I’d recommend matte cupboard doors because they’re easier to clean

I would love something like this.

Don't go for a resin sink as you will be bleaching it every 5 mins as it stains so easily.

Teafortwo01 · 25/10/2024 10:22

Thanks for the tip on the sink. I need functional and easy to clean!

I’ve never had a new kitchen before so haven’t got a clue on some things.

If I was choosing (hopefully next year!) I would go for a sage colour. Our kitchen looks out through the conservatory to the garden and the continuation of the green appeals to me - we are not overlooked so we look out onto lots of trees, have ivy covered walls etc. It is, however, a north facing so rather dark kitchen so I'd need to be careful to pick a shade that doesn't look like grey putty over winter!

I HIGHLY recommend micro cement. It’s gorgeous, feels lovely, temperature and stain resistant, you can get it in a huge variety of colours and sink and kick stand to match AND you can just put it on top of existing tile/worktop

Mine was cream gloss with black laminate worktops and I painted the cupboards dark teal blue, painted the handles bronze (were silver) and put a wood effect vinyl on the worktops.

My kitchen doesn't get that much sunlight though so thinking of changing it and doing a lighter blue, but have also got a sample of a navy blue paint as I'm very torn as love dark blue. 4 rooms in my house are dark blue!

I've just ordered an oak kitchen...it feels very odd to be ahead of the curve! Thanks for mentioning wood, everyone seems to prefer painted.

My existing kitchen is from the 1980s! Solid reclaimed Victorian pine, hand waxed (once in a blue moon haha) Really bombproof, it is mellow not orange, I think it's something like pitch pine. I'd take it with me if I could, but we are moving.

My new kitchen will be made of pine with oak framed solid oak cupboard and drawer fronts and oak lined where it shows eg inside drawers. Still undecided about the worktop though.

White shaker. Timeless

But a little boring.

But a little boring.

That depends on the rest of the decor. I'd far rather have a plain kitchen and add character and soul in with easily changeable items. Far better than an "exciting" kitchen which soon goes out of fashion and "needs" changing.

littleburn · 25/10/2024 14:21

I have sage green with gold/brass handles and cream countertops (which I love), but this is my dream kitchen.

jolenethea · 25/10/2024 14:21

I love the Howdens shaker style in colour 'linen'. Looks very classy and I don't think it'll date as easily as coloured ones.

I was about to get one but thought I'd ask mumsnet and it was a resounding no. I'm so grateful. I just got white ceramic and I'm very happy with it.

I don’t think it’s the colour that dates on its own, it’s everything together. When I see pictures of dated kitchens that have been repainted and with new accessories and handles they still look dated to me. It’s the worktops, tiles, appliances, lighting, layout. I think with a larger kitchen it’s less of an issue; in a smaller kitchen it’s harder to get right. So as others have suggested, just pick something that you like now, and are likely to like in 3 years (time flies anyway). After a while everything looks a bit dated, but it’s the overall package that dates thing in my opinion, not the colour.

That's true. But I think that's more like 20-30 year old kitchens rather than 5 year old kitchens. With 5-15 years old, you can tell the date by colour and handles. I put a kitchen in my old house in 2011 which was white gloss, a bit dated now, although the worktop, layout (had the tall cupboards and 'horizontal' cupboards), upstand, sink are all fine and not dated at all.

I think I'm ahead of the trend now with 2-tone involving wood 🤣. Hopefully it'll last but even if it doesn't, I love it so who cares.

DisforDarkChocolate · 25/10/2024 16:37

I've wanted a pink kitchen for five years. Now I'm actually looking to get a new kitchen pink is bloody everywhere.

I'm probably going with Saffron from Howdens.

longtompot · 25/10/2024 16:51

@Am805463 that yellow kitchen is gorgeous! I have always thought of having off white kitchen units with seaglass green tiles for the splash backs and white walls, but I am now thinking maybe yellow units and white walls is the way to go...

TheDogIsInCharge · 25/10/2024 17:13

I filmed in a kitchen that was Inchyra blue and it was glorious. Picture attached.

I was sorely tempted to paint over my own Hague blue shaker style units when I got home. I didn't and I still love my dark blue/marble corian worktop kitchen. But maybe one day. I love a bit of colour. I also filmed in the kitchen in The Pink House and it was a stunner

But my house is full of colour and I'm very much a "do what you love, not what will sell the house" kind of person.

If you were having a new kitchen, what colour would you choose?

Thank you for this! I’ve just been looking and it may be a cost-effective way of banishing the evil black granite. I’m excited.

I'd just choose the colour your like the most and then when you want to refresh it you can paint it. It's so easy to do. The paints are so good these days that it's no problem at all.

I've got fake light oak bases and cream gloss high cabinets which I love. It's an expensive kitchen so the fake wood looks lovely.

One of my kids is having a new kitchen so I had a look around a big kitchen shop the other day. I was surprised at the Matt black finishes. I'd imagine they would be impossible to keep clean.

We've got a matte black utility with oak natural edge worktops. It's fine to keep clean and we have muddy dogs in there every day.

We have lots of natural oak in our kitchen and larder - with the right lighting, it's absolutely stunning.
